Congratulations on getting noticed Dan and also to all the others who were featured. You guys deserve it.
I have been blown away by some of the images posted here. You all have done an amazing job of capturing the drama, the emotion and even the beauty of what has been a difficult couple of days for many. Keep sharing what you are seeing out there.
It is always nice to know that others appreciate the pictures we take and are so proud of.

Dan thanks for figuring this out. I was wondering why my view count skyrocketed on two of my photos.

Haha yeah - Needless to say I was shocked when my Views count started going up exponentially. I finally just wrote in my caption, 'hey, what's up? who's linking to this?' and somebody sent me a message with the links.
Really, it was a clever move by Yahoo! - by using an actual flickr account and linking to it, not only did they get access to great pictures without having to even gain consent, but they found a great way to promote flickr to a huge group of people who may have never used it before. Very clever idea.
Not to make light of all the loss people have suffered, of course - but I did find this interesting and sort of cool.

wow I didn't know they (yahoo) were adding photos from Flickr in a back door way.
I personally allowed Yahoo to use a few of my fire photos by letting them link only to those with full credit to me. Just go to the main news website and in photos section allow them to link with Flickr, choose which shots and give brief description.

I think some of our pics are getting used again, because a bunch of mine have spiked a ton today, like from 2,000 to 5,000 views, or from 150 to 5,000. I can't figure out how it happening yet.

There's an article from CBS about flickr & YouTube and the fires here: www.cbsnews.com/stories/2007/10/24/national/main3401604.s...

This is kind of crazy. I've not seen the news agency tap into Flickr quite like this in prior disasters.

We may be seeing sort of the cutting edge of this sort of thing. Tech has definitely allowed normal people to become more a part of reporting in a sort of Thomas Friedman, "world is flat" sort of way. Stories like the U of Florida student being dragged out and tasered during a Kerry lecture or the UCLA student being tasered in the library would never have happened ten years ago, before people could whip out cameras or phones and videotape it, then post it to YouTube.
The practial reality is that, no matter how good news photographers are, in a situation like this, the sheer number of people with cameras and internet access (almost everyone) makes it inevitable that many of the best pics will come from normal people - either because they were in the right place at the right time, or just because with that many people some will inevitably find a way to get good pictures.
The media is starting to pick up on this and use it to their advantage.
CNN, I noticed, has a place where you can upload video and pictures. Many of their major fire pics came from regular people - mostly Pepperdine students.

This photo had 1000 views in less than 24 hrs. I don't think it was linked, but man 1000 views in less than 24 hours.

This one got 50,000 views in 2 days.

What's everyone's thoughts on Yahoo (or who ever posted them) using these without permission?

Yahoo owns Flickr. Yahoo makes it possible for Flickr to be up and as big and stable as it is.
If you don't want your photos used, turn them to private. If not, they're just creating more exposure for yours and other's photos.
=) Yahoo isn't using without permission, the use is completely legit, as it is within the flickr terms of use of "public" photos.

One of mine was one of the first group they used, the picture jumped to nearly 80,000 views in 2 days!! I didnt think there was anything special about it other than it was one of the earlier pictures about the fires. I kind of felt a little special that they selected my picture even though they didnt ask. But as djloche said Yahoo owns Flickr so they dont need to ask.

it's not that they own it, so they don't have to ask, (but that sure speeds up the process i'm sure)
it's that they're using them properly.
Anyone can display their own favorites on their website, they just have to make sure the photos link back to the proper place on flickr. (i'm not sure if this requires the API use or not, but regardless it's still possible.
=)

Ya that's what I was wondering... Having the image link back to your page - does that make it like a watermark of sorts?

Wow, I was wondering how one of my photos was getting over 1900 views in like an hour.

I don't have a problem with it. They own flickr, so they're allowed to create an account. And they didn't post any of our pics on a Yahoo News website - they only linked to our pictures on flickr. Our pictures were already on flickr, so all they did was link to us. And they didn't make any money off it.
I never have a problem with people linking to my pictures. I just wish the picture they used had been a better one!
