i always rely on my trusty timbuk2 messenger bag. the one i have is way too big [i should have got compression straps for when it's empty] but i still love it to death. the bike couriers in downtown los angeles always end up giving me a nod when they see me rocking it.

I like the backpack. They're the most comfortable for longer term use. I have one with losts of straps (hiking daypack style) and one that came from the back to school section.
Messenger bags are good for when you're frequently getting stuff out/putting stuff in. But I don't do that much.

I go through bags like water. I've had backpacks, messenger bags, laptop cases...the works. My wife said that the last thing I need is another bag. Currently, I have a Tumi ballistic nylon laptop case. The storage configuration is amazing. It has this zipper expander in case I need to cram more stuff into it. It also has the zipper pouch that fits on top of my rolling luggage when I travel on business. I think I'll keep this one for a while.

I use, on normal occasions, my Cheat messenger bag. On longer type trips I tend to use the old yellow backpack. But the messenger bag most of the time.

I float between a Courierware (www.courierware.com) messenger bag that I've had for almost 13 years, and a Chrome (www.chromebags.com) messenger bag that I grabbed a couple of years ago. Chrome has a store in SF, and they used to have spare Kozmo.com (memories...) bags for sale, one of which I use as an overnight bag. I love Waterfield Designs (www.sfbags.com) for various small gear bags and a laptop sleeve.

I bounce between a Targus computer backpack and a Timbuk2 messenger bag for work. I also have a smaller Timbuk2 bag for roadtrips or vacations that I love.

Right now I'm hooked on my latest Timbuk2 (represent SF, baby!) for it's many pockets and handy harness strap. I also love my vintage Pan-Am messenger bag and my grey Lumibear backpack.

I'm a big fan of my Spire Endo (I've got an older second generation). Made in the USA, great attention to detail, holds all my crap, solid padding for my powerbook AND, unlike Timbuk2, not sported by everyone and their grandmother.
I picked up a Tom Bihn Courier Laptop Bag for my baby brother as a graduation gift, it's a nice bag as well. Holds his 17" powerbook plus peripherals, really solid construction, they're local (Seattle) and service was top notch.

I think i have about 20 bags here, my wife claims its a fetish. I do have a leaning to crumpler bags but i tend to carry a very plain one to work every day, just a basic black faux leather briefcase thing really. (photo coming soon)

I really like my airbag's - www.airbagcraftworks.com - those bags made from old truck tarps (?) are quite popular. Freitag's famous for theirs - www.freitag.ch
Also nice: www.truckbag.de (german only), who make their bags from huge cinema posters.
If I go on a trip over the weekend, I take my 40l backpack...

I guess, I'm cheap, cranky, lazy or some combination- but I use free bags. You know, the give aways at meetings, etc.
But thanks for sharing your faves, if I ever go shopping, I now have a list!

i'm glad to see so many other guys here with a bag fetish - i thought i was the only one in the world. I have a little collection going on - but I still haven't found the one perfect bag.
I've never been able to understand those men who get to walk around without lugging some bag full of stuff along with them. Pockets can only hold so much after all. I guess the secret is that their car is their bag or else they make their bag carrying partner carry all their stuff for them. I know that is what happens with me. 'Are you taking your bag?' 'as always' 'could you just take this this and this for me' - this usually means me having to take out a much larger bag than I would've done in the first place. Argh.

^Now you all know how I ended up with the timbuk2 "Bolo" (XL) bag
Well worth the cost as you said the car becomes the bag... Being a pedestrian/mass transit user by choice I feel like my bag is my trunk. Plus I can get so much in it that I rarely accept a bag from any store.
Do you know how many dinosaurs I've saved by now?

i really have been liking my Jump BackPack from good 'ol Canadian Tire. it is the bag that i take biking. great storage space and cheap too.
my laptop belongs to a discontinued Targus bag ~ sort of like this one, but with black instead of metal finish.

Another vote for Timbuk2. I picked up a Commuter Computer bag back in the days when you could still customize your own bag starting with *any* bag as a base. I guess their volume got to be too much to handle. Although, mine's not that special because they ended up choosing my configuration (light blue, silver, light blue) as one of the stock choices after they eliminated the customization. *shrugs* It's still a great laptop bag, and I'll keep it 'til it falls apart.

Kids lunch boxes have the best designs, lots of space (for their size) and they're brightly coloured, so it's easy to find things. Before that I had a messenger bag, but I was always losing things in its inky depths.

rossi bags
i have several of those, all of which can hold a laptop. they have many great features like carabins for holding the key ring, zippered pockets, but the fab one is that u can carry it either as a shoulder bag, backpack or bike carrier.

I'm a bag floozy- I also go through them like water and its an expensive habit...
Crumpler bags rock...Their courier bags are excellent (messenger in American spek LOL) I've used them for like 8 years... Th Fux Delux (2nd biggest bag they make) just absorbs everything - and is really good.. I've been looking at the Bees Knees but there is a point when a bag can actually get too big.... Still debating the validity of it...
Oh for my photo gear; I use a Lowerpro Omni traveller, possibly soon a Stealth Report AW 650 to fit all my gear...
I'm also looking at a Booq bag soon for a PowerBook...
Cheers,
Nathan.

To and fro the office I'm partial to my Bruun's Bazar courier bag (Danish brand) but for all other purposes I found a Mandarina Duck bag that simply holds everything... Great for weekend trips & days at the beach alike...

Right now, i switch between a Swiss Army Backpack (was made about ...3 years ago cant remember the exact name of it, all i know is they dont make it anymore... and one last thing also turns into a raft and a tent j/k) and a Swiss Army Sling bag "Mt. Rosa" Depending on what i need to do.
I also have some cheapo sporting good store Camel pack that i use sometimes when i want to carry just my camera and, maybe some water? (i use it when i Mountain Bike and or if i just need a small backpack)
My Powerbook stays in my PowerSleeve Booq bag when i'm not using it.
I am looking for a "all in one" bag soon. something to hold the powerbook and everything (cause it just sucks carrying two bags everywhere.

i use a messenger bag most of the time, but if i bring my laptop, i bring my backpack cos my laptop is a bit heavy and having a strap on both shoulders helps distribute the weight.

Bailey Works in Portsmouth, NH (baileyworks.com) makes my favorite bag. Mine has seen daily use for 5 years, and is still going strong. Nicer than the timbuk2 bags and way, way lighter than the ones made by Chrome. Plus, you'll rarely run into someone else who has one, unless you're in Boston.

I used to use a Timbuk2 until I got a bit fed-up with them, too heavy and not very well designed. I moved to Crumpler.

I have a red nylon Japanese bag with lots of pockets. Great for water bottles, gym gear, groceries, raincoat, etc. Comfortable to carry, easy to clean - I just throw it in the washing machine and it comes out great. Even after the cat peed on it! It's so lightweight I throw it in the luggage when I'm travelling and take it on trips with me. I'm getting a laptop/messenger/travel bag SOON.
I hike with a Lowe Alpine, and P hikes with a MacPac, which really ROCKS.

I hate bags, i buy them, they seem perfect, then i see another that also seems perfect, buy that one, and before i know i have a dozen bags that i don't like and i HAVE TO buy another bag. i buy all kinds: purses, backpaks, messenger bags, camera bags, but only one crumpler, i even have a breifcase-type bag. at least i'm not as bad about bags as i am with pens, you could never imagine how many i have.

Same here...but I wind-up Ebaying the bags and "re-investing" in another. I prefer the messenger style bag for every day use, but for more cumbersome loads, I prefer a backpack....especially if you have a lot to carry on a day long excursion...it's just more comfortable to me.
Right now I use a "Danish Souperbag" for my everyday work and I have the Waterfield Cargo bag and sleevecase for when I need to carry my laptop (I sometimes just put it in it's WF sleevecase and take it in the Souperbag-just depends on the situation).
I also have a Crumpler Son-O-Salad bag that I use sometimes and I'm about to order the Domke F-3X bag for my Digital Rebel XT camera and lenses.

Courier bags for me. With a single strap, over the shoulder number I can just swing it round to the front and get my ting. You can't do that with a backpack.
