Removing an elephant

Alec_Burgess says:

I created a set: www.flickr.com/photos/alec_burgess/sets/72157602039682932/

I've tried to describe in the set description the simple-minded way it was done with Gimp plugin.

Creation was tedious, results are marginal :-(

Any suggestions - how to do quicker with better results appreciated :-)

Question Can someone explain the difference it makes when choosing amongst the three "gradient methods"?

well i did my check but reply is not so simple

1 the most effective color to mask is black
instead then on a duplicated layer is better apply on a new transparent layer since anything not fully transparent will be part of the mask

..mind that for the mask is not needed much precision but just must be a bit bigger then the elephant to mask or erase

2 then you will not remove the elephant by scaling up but just you will minimize it
You can well remove if you instead scale DOWN

3 Something stupid happened to the graphic interface of the windows version of the plugin

Preserve and delete are INVERTED, so you must use PRESERVE, with your preserve layer TO DELETE and the other way round

Anyway here is a xcf file with the elephant, and the masks i used
www.box.net/shared/1qxvdxxnou

But if you want remove one of the main subject of a image is better first scale up the image(if Needed), and then use the plugin to scale down

Anyway if you want just remove a object i don't think that LR is the quickest and cleaner way.

Something as select the object+clone tool is much more strightforwarded

If a plugin could be useful for that task is RESYNTHESYS
www.logarithmic.net/pfh/resynthesizer
that if you need to fill...the missed elephant body with a seamless texture of sand and water..so you need to use twice 1for sand 1 for water)

Anyway clone tool usually is suffent also for quite accurate works

With LR you can remove (scaling down) but you will also change the whole image, if you don't want that you have to use the more traditional tecnique

Hi fotocomics - I'll look carefully at your XCF file.
The resythnesizer looks very interesting too. - so much so that I d/l'd the 62 MB - 141 page dissertation and skimmed the first 25 pages or so.

How did you happen upon it?

I installed it (correctly I'm pretty sure) in both Gimp 2.2.17 and 2.4.0.rc2 and tried as a first step to replicate the Flying saucer removal.

This desktop screenshot shows all the bits and pieces but removal (or anything else) doesn't seem to happen.

I've put the XCF here if you care to have a look ... ?
buralex.googlepages.com/remove-Saucer.xcf

Here's the desktop (with a long description):
www.flickr.com/photos/alec_burgess/1396079251

btw: As you can probably tell by my long-windedness I'm new to Flickr and especially to Flikr groups. When I make a post, how do I get the image referred to appear below my text?

Fotocomics: Took me a while to get: www.box.net/shared/1qxvdxxnou downloaded because of course I had to take the time to register myself :-)

Merci beaucoup for pointing me this treasure.
With 1 GB free (per email-account!) and the ability to upload entire folders who needs an FTP space anymore.

My ISP thought they were being generous when they bumped my free space from 10 MB to 50 MB!

Its amazing what interesting stuff you can find if you pay attention to where you are being sent.

sorry i don't understand well your reference to the 141 pages dissertation..or maybe you refer to the " Phd thesis" where the algorithm is discussed?

Anyway i will have a look to your xcf file soon

i reply now just to add that in the plugin are included 2 script fu...and there could be a problem similar to the one you got with liquid resize

Simply the exe file you found in the zip go in the gimp plugin folder while the 2 script (seems as text, file estension is.scm) go in the script folder Gimp/share/ gimp/2.0/script

That 2 Script are not essential to use the plugin,on the contrary plugin itself could do nothing with the script

But the 2 scripts could automate some operations and "call" the plugin, if installed correctly they should appear in the script fu menu.

If not maybe you unzipped everything in the plugin folder and they are there maybe wrapped in 1 or more folders

They will not do any damage there but to use them you may want move both in the script folder.

well i try later with your example
----------------------------------------------------------------------

About posting image, if is your image and is on flickr you can just click all size chose MEDIUM and just post the code under the image

If not you can with a right click on the image get the image address and replace with it "URL" here

>img src="URL"<

NOTE that the arrows should be inverted, (but i had to invert to show you the html code...

why should be clear below where i didn't invert the arrows

since URL is not a valid image address you can't see the text but no even a image if not a little square

Rather than putting plugins and scripts in the Program Files tree, I've been putting them in the apps folder. ... so ... so that I don't loose track of the addiditions I've made amongst the 100's of plugins etc. that are created in %Program Files%\gimp when I reinstall the next time so ... ignoring readme's etc.which I've left in the downloaded zip, I've put these three file in the %appdata% folder as:

C:\Documents and Settings\Alec\.gimp-2.2\plug-ins\resynthesizer.exe
C:\Documents and Settings\Alec\.gimp-2.2\scripts\smart-enlarge.scm
C:\Documents and Settings\Alec\.gimp-2.2\scripts\smart-remove.scm

But the 2 scripts could automate some operations and "call" the plugin, if installed correctly they should appear in the script fu menu.

YES - that's where they appear. I thought there was also a way to execute the plugin without going through the script-fu's but if so that's what I haven't found.

btw: Thanks again for the hand-holding - You have saved me hours.

I followed the example in your XCF (I only forgot to switch the feature-preserve and feature-discard masks once) and it IS much easier. A little cloning after the last step and the smaller elephant is GONE, GONE, GONE!
