January Modelscaping Event Information Thread!

view profile

Canuck Gtrplyr says:

Hey all!

Welcome to the official event information thread! Note that this post will be updated to include the most current information between now and the day of the event.

Event: Modelscaping - Strobist Style
Date: Saturday, January 17, 2009
Time: 10 a.m. - 5 p.m.
Location: Pacifica Studios - 821 Powell St, Vancouver
Cost: $10
Maximum participants: 16

The purpose of this thread is to give everyone an idea of what Steve and I have planned for the event. This is the place to ask questions and offer suggestions. Please note this is NOT the sign up thread!

But, here's how sign-ups will work:

First, make sure that you are going to be available on that day. Check with the wife, work, friends, family BEFORE signing up when the sign up thread goes live.

Watch for the sign-up thread to appear on Saturday December 20, 2008.

DON'T FRET if you are offline that day! The sign-up thread will be available for 48 hours from the time of posting.

Starting on December 20, if you are available and wish to attend, sign up on THAT thread (not this one -- all attempted sign-ups on this thread will be deleted).

Sign-up will end 48 hours later. If we have more than 16 people signed up a lottery will be held over the next few days to determine which 16 strobists will be able to attend.

We'll also list alternate strobists who will get first crack at cancellations.

Goal

We have secured Pacifica Studios again for this meetup, the same location the November 30th meetup was held in (821 Powell St, Vancouver).

Our goal for this meetup is to provide everyone (ourselves included) an opportunity to gain more experience working with models, to discuss and share posing concepts, to learn principles of body sculpting with light, and most importantly... to shoot!

:)

The tentative schedule for this event is as follows:

10:00 - 10:15 Introductions

10:15 - 10:30 Working with Make up artists (lead by a make up artist)

10:30 - 11:00 Working with models and posing ideas

11:00 - 12:00 Bodyscaping - Framing a models body (and her face) in a pleasing way to the eye. Most importantly, how to use light to help accentuate shapes, curves and the human form.

12:00 - 12:30 Lunch

12:30 - 16:30 Shooting!

16:30 - 17:00 Group debrief with photographers, models, and make up artists

Details

During the morning, while we are engaged in the above activities, our 2 make up artists will be making up our 4 models. One of the models will be made up with a creative theme (rather than traditional glamour makeup). This will be ultra-creative and not traditional beauty makeup. Jeanine C will be working with Pepa Chan on the concept, and we'll update this thread with information about the concept so that participants can possibly plan ahead to work with this theme. The other models will be made up with a beauty/glamour look.

Veronica Hull from VH Studio Designs has graciously offered to bring by some fantastic pieces of her work for our models to wear throughout the day for our shoots!

In the afternoon the 4 models will rotate through 4 break-out groups (4 photographers per group). Each group will have about an hour with each model to light your "set" and shoot the model.

One of the things we would like to try this time around is that every single person in each group should "captain" one shoot. It's ok if you are new! If you can't figure out HOW to light something, at least you can decide WHAT you want to light. You and the other three members of your group can work together to create the shoot you have envisioned. Keep in mind that one of the four sets will need to incorporate your creative theme with Jeanine. This is something that could possibly be given thought to in advance, and ideas brought in the day of the shoot.

What we hope to achieve through this is to help our newer members gain experience setting up a shoot, and also to avoid the walking up to a group, asking "What are your settings?", snapping a few shots, and wandering away. Sure you get a few shots on your card doing this, but what have you learned?

At the end of the afternoon session we would love to have a group debrief with all of the models, make up artists, and shooters. We did this informally on November 30th, and many people seemed to enjoy it. This would be an opportunity for the models to provide feedback and advice to the shooters, and for everyone to discuss the event in general.

Then, we drink!

Models and MUAs

Our models and make up artists that are currently booked for this event include (this will be updated as we get confirmation from the participants):

Jeanine C (Model - confirmed)
Into the Mouth of Madness

Cindy Fay (Model - confirmed)
Bubble Gum II

Samantha Kerik (Model - confirmed)
Samantha 4

Victoria (Model - confirmed)
Victoria V

Pepa Chan (Creative MUA - confirmed)
Paper Girl III

Daniela Fidanza - Beauty/Glamour MUA

Cost

There will be a $10 charge for attending this event, none of which goes to Steve or I! The money will go to covering the costs of running the days event (i.e. lunch, soft drinks, etc.)

Participants

In total there will be:

16 shooters (not counting Steve and I, who most likely will shoot very little)
4 models
2 make up artists

One final note: Pacifica Studios has graciously agreed to provide us with their studio space free of charge again. This is incredibly kind of them. They are doing so on the stipulation that this is for the purposes of our meetup only, and that none of the work we create during the event is used for commercial purposes.

That's about it! Steve will be posting the official Modelscaping sign up post on Saturday, December 20, 2008.

Cheers,

Ian and Steve

I think so Rod. We will just pull the sixteen people out that will comprise the initial attendee list first. Then, we'll draw the remaining names and record the order drawn to create the waiting list.

Yeah, Rod. For the waiting list, we'll list out (in order) who's on that list. So if you're at the top of that list, you might want to make plans to attend, as the chance of you getting in when someone drops is greater.

Looks like an extremely well-organized plan guys. Bravo for taking the initiative and putting it together!

I'll aim to jump right on the signup post, as it looks like I'm totally fre and clear that day. Wouldn't it be a treat for this to be the first Vancouver Strobist meetup that I'm actually able to attend? ;-)

Thanks Ian and Steve!

Ian/Steve: If you guys are interested I am willing to bring/lend a pair of Alien Bee 800 monolights, stands, and modifiers (softbox, beauty dish, barn doors, grids, snoots, etc.). If I make it into the shoot via the lotto I would bring them myself. If not, then I could arrange to hand them off to someone who is going. Up to you guys. The offer is there in any case.
As an alternative, if I don't make it in the lotto I could always just go as an assistant to help with setups etc. and not shoot.

(This is not intended as a bribe. Though, if it works as one I won't say anything. )

Thanks for the offer! An equipment discussion should definitely occur when the list is created.

Personally, I've always felt most of us bring way to much to these meets... but I'm a minimalist (and lazy) at heart. If each person brings 2 lights and stands that would be 8 per group.... more than enough.

Thanks again for the offer!

Ian/Steve...could you sneak in just a little bit on working with hairstylists and wardrobe stylists...althought it may be hard because there's so much on the agenda already.

Looks like we're getting the best of the models thanks to Steve. Kind of like bringing out the best wine from the private cellar...

Awesome...now if I can get around my work schedule...

IF I can get a wardrobe or hair stylist to join us, we can discuss that too. I can talk a bit about my experiences working with them too (although I've only worked with a few of each). The models may be able to better offer some insight into that as well.

All of the models are here because they want to help out, learn, and gain experience. So we're all in this together!

Now were did I put that 39 port? ;)

C'mon Steve and Ian... you two are organizing, so you both know that you're going. The rest of us have to just wait here in terror of eventuality that the final list gets posted, and our names are absent. :-(

Surely there's some way to sway you?

Movie passes? Fine Scotch? Concert tix for the next time my ex-bandmates from Slipknot are in town? Let's be sensible, people! Can we really simply leave this all to chance?!?!? That's madness!

If someone wants to the take the ball and run with setting up a second venue, models, location, etc., then by all means! Would love to see the other 16 get involved with something. But the key is that someone needs to take the torch and run with it. Ian and I have our hands full with this event. :)

I would like to see a "calendar of events" set up for the group actually, with someone signing up to host an event every two months or so. That way each person would know when they are hosting and would be able to plan accordingly.

This is the second event Steve and I have co-hosted, and they definitely take some time to set up.

Hey Phil!

I don't think we need another site, I just think we need a thread here to outline upcoming events. As poor as Flickr's forum tools are, I love that we have everything here, without having to go to yet another site.

One thread here entitled "2009 Vancouver Strobist Events" would suffice. In that thread people can post when they are hosting an event, and a link to the thread with the information about that event.

All the pro & con comments made in July still apply, and I don`t feel inclined to manage a separate site.

I just wish Yahoo would add extra functions for Flickr Groups such as a calender, polling or voting function...
...even a ``delete obsolete discussions`` option would be good too!

Ok...is everyone ready for this?

I've secured some fantastic wardrobe for our models for the shoot. Since we're not doing NUDE bodyscaping shots, what better way to clothe our models than in tight fitting PVC and corsets? ;)

Veronica Hull from VH Studio Designs has graciously offered to bring by some fantastic pieces of her work for our models to wear throughout the day for our shoots!

I had the good fortune of working with Veronica last summer in Nanaimo shooting some of her designs alongside some awesome birds of prey. She's in Vancouver selling her designs at the Taboo show at the Vancouver Convention Center next weekend.

So while we'd never demand this, it would be awesome if any participants offered to allow Veronica to use any of their shots in a promotional manner (on her site, flyers, biz cards, etc.) that highlight her wardrobe. Like I said, it's not mandatory, but I'll be able to provide her contact info if you choose to do so. I know I'll be giving her copies of all my work.

Less than a week to go! :)

Last post before the meet from me!

The shopping is done, the studio is confirmed, the models are arranged (and rearranged), the wardrobe and MUA(s) are booked, and the food is being delivered at noon.

We're ready to rock!

I just wanted to send a quick note to a couple of people who have emailed over the last few days, concerned that they don't have enough experience, or enough gear. Tomorrow is all about learning to light in a collaborative, supportive environment. There will be plenty of gear, and plenty of people to help you get your shot. Just relax and enjoy!!

Cheers,
