13th Build Challenge...Fear And Loathing!

view profile

Lino M is a group administrator Lino M  Pro User  says:

I have waited so long to post this challenge! The gist of this text was stored unpublished on my desktop for several months now just waiting for the right time. Finally the 13th challenge is upon us so I present to you…Fear And Loathing…a build challenge based on phobias and superstitions!

What is a superstition? Its said to be an unreasonable or excessive belief in fear or magic without foundation in scientific and logical knowledge. Most have to do with concepts we can’t quite understand like luck or fortune. We’ve all heard the old proverbs…don’t let a black cat cross your path…don’t open an umbrella indoors…breaking a mirror causes seven years of bad luck. We’ve all heard them before…and maybe more than a few of us avoid stepping on a crack just in case it really causes bodily harm for our dear mothers…but where do these superstitions come from? According to legend, many originated when the Great Plague afflicted most of Europe. It was ordered by St. Gregory The Great to say “God bless you” whenever anyone sneezed to prevent the further spread of disease. Spilling salt is said to cause misfortune so to remedy this, we toss just a pinch of it over our shoulder to…blind the Devil, who apparently sits over our left shoulder.

What is a phobia? My dictionary says its an irrational or very powerful fear and dislike of something, for example, spiders or confined spaces. They can be triggered by external stimulus…particularly when we’re young but some common phobias like fear of snakes or the dark are said to be deeply embedded in our limbic systems and have apparently been with us ever since we were cavemen when scary predators hunted after dark. Do you feel a little uneasy about this challenge and not sure why? You may have Triskaidekaphobia…or fear of the number 13. You’re not alone. Many tall buildings avoid the 13th floor all together and go right from 12 to 14...some airports don’t have a Terminal 13...and next time you fly Continental, observe as you’re filing back to find your seat that there is no 13th row. What’s with the number 13 anyway? That’s for you to research and while you’re at it…

…Lets get to our challenge! You are to build any car, truck, or bike that somehow represents any superstition or phobia. Maybe you’ll build a spider themed roadster or put the number 13 on a fiendish racer…the choice is yours. While its ok to slap a bunch of Lego bats on a black car and call it done, I’d encourage you to really do some research and give your MOC some thought. Maybe the snarling grille of a classic Chevy will inspire something more…or perhaps the heightened stance of a donk or a gasser can somehow illustrate Acrophobia…the fear of heights. If your idea makes small children cry then…you’re surely a step in the right direction. As always, build one vehicle, or build many…either way, be sure to post them here when you’re done. Today is November 1st, you have until December 1st, one month to come up with your MOCs. I’d wish you good luck on this challenge but in the world of theatre saying good luck is said to bring…bad luck. So instead I bid you…Break a leg!

Apple pie...I've learned that people appreciate being totally taken by surprise...which is why its best not to talk about your build before you post it. Your idea is fine for the challenge, just make it clear in the write up what you are doing.

Dylan...this doesn't have to be based on any or YOUR phobias or superstitions...just any that exist. So if you want to do a spider themed car and you're perfectly fine with spiders then all is good. Also, anything sort of scary looking would work. Also, your vehicle can be in a diorama environment that helps illustrate your idea.

Like any other superstition, this one is essentially irrational. Look at the diversity of idea that people have come up with in previous challenges. In those, it's hard to find two vehicles that look the same. If you're still afraid: GET BUILDING!

lego911  Pro User  says:

In the spirit of just doing it, here is my first Challenge 13 post.

When I was a youngster years and year (decades) ago, there was a teacher at my Primary school. Her name was Mrs Lindemeyer. She looked (a bit) like a Gestapo agent - at least to an 8 year old. She was the feared Music Instructor and she drove this:

1961 Mercedes-Benz W112 300 SE Saloon - Black

Mercedes-Benz W112 300SE Saloon

Is this the perfect henchman car or what?

I believe a car similar to this was used by evil henchmen in one of the early Bond films, I think by someone with a murderous hat.

Anyway, as I grew up (and taller than Mrs Lindemeyer), I realised that she was actually a very nice person with a groovy old car, rather than someone to be scared of. But as a little person, the persona of this teacher was really quite scary.

About the car.

Released in 1961 and based fundamentally on the 1959 W111 220 S/SE (b) 'Fintail' body, the 300 SE used a version of the 3 litre in-line six from the 300 SL sports car from the 50's to early 60's. This series replaced the earlier 300 d Series 'Adenaur' that had been the top of the range post war model for Mercedes-Benz for more than a decade.

The W112 shared much in common with the 1959-1965 W111 220 6-cylinder models, additionally with a long-wheelbase model 300 SEL with 4 inches extra in the rear passenger compartment. The body style was also shared with the 1961-1965 W110 190 series, which made do with a two inch shorter wheelbase and a shorter nose incorporating single circular headlamps instead of the one-piece incorporated vertical units used in the 220 and 300 models. (I know, this can get confusing).

In 1965 the W112 models were replaced by the W108/W109 S-Series cars of similar size. The remaining fintails were given the designation 200 for the 4-cylinder cars from 1965-1968, before being replaced by the smaller W114/W115 'New Generation' or 'Slash 8' models. A minor anomaly was the retention of one 6-cylinder version from 1965-1968 at 230 S specification, this was de-trimmed relative to the early 220 Model, as not to step on the toes of the new W108 250 S/SE model.

As a henchman car though the 300 SE in black has to be the way to go. As a counterpoint, would my Gestapo looking teacher seemed as menacing if her 300-ride had been white?

Mercedes-Benz W112 300SE Saloon

As something to be scared of, when I first got my drivers licence in the late 1980's, I was pretty keen to get a dark grey fintail (220 or 230) with which I could run over any remaining 1960's escapee hippies. (didn't happen though)

Because she was scary, and drove a big, black, groovy car.

These were really very expensive at the time, so they were quite uncommon amoungst the 1970's Australian domestic and Japanese imports. Even in the Euro-centric suburb I lived in, these really were special, along with the unrepresentatively high number of Citroen DS that were around.

Oh Ralph its perfect for this challenge and surely no one else has come up with it. I've learned in art school that some of the pizazz exists in the art itself...in this case here at LUGNuts its Lego vehicles. But most of the impact comes in the presentation, the write up. Also, in these challenges...and in a lot of things in life, its encouraged to follow the rules...but implied that rules are meant to be broken intelligently. Just posting a firetruck as is without explanation may raise more than a few questions. But when you present it as fear of fire, fear of heights...and especially fear of loud noises (what child or dog hasn't been freaked out whenever a firetruck goes by?)...that's when we get it! You've thereby followed the rules of the challenge...then intelligently broken them...in a way that we all understand and appreciate. I say your firetruck idea is perfect for this challenge!

OK then, LUGnuts. Here's one of my self-built TTs. It was for Fear Of Largeness - you know that feeling your chest gets at a rock concert? Or when you've stepped in front of a large-ish cement truck, turned around, just while its mighty snarling truck engine rumbled to life while you jump ten feet? Or when the neighborhoods bullies come up to you, rolling up their sleeves and cracking their knuckles? That feeling of excitement, of adrenaline. So here, (I needed an impressive name) is Iron Goliath! Doth thou likest?

Iron Goliath by r a p h y

Also available in yellow, here 'tis:

It's a bit small (Not exactly something you'd be afraid of stepping in front of) so I don't expect (although I hope greatly) any high impressions - I'll probably post another Fear Of ???? sometime. Well, anyway, I'm happy to post my first LUGnuts entry!!

We've already discussed a few of the fears this can be associated with: fear of heights, fear of fire, fear of loud noises and the superstition involving walking under ladders. In addition there is a type of loathing particular to LEGO builders with this one: a Mega Bloks set provided some of the inspiration ;-)

Soooooo, better than my little Iron Goliath? Yessss.
You know those stupid queens in England some long time ago? Those queens that had to have your jackets sacrificed to a small puddle 'o mud so that she could strut across it, just because Miss Queen couldn't walk around the puddle? And also because if you didn't she'd slice your head off. Jeez. Some poeple had obsessions. I probably would have sneaked up behind her and gave her a little shove. Ahhh, the satisfaction that would give!
But that's mud. And this is dirt. Rats are associated with death, plague, and all that other stuff that doesn't exist, so I made a Rat Rod Bonneville Racer. Tell me what you think ;)

For my car, I decided to go with one of the most common phobias out there. Did you know that 40% of the world's population is claustrophbic? That's the fear of small, confined spaces! Often times these small areas can make the person feel sick, or stressed-out. Nothing screams "Get me outta here!" like a 1963 Peel P50! Known to be the world's smallest production car at only 54 inches long! Claustrophobics beware...

lego911  Pro User  says:

Hi Guys,

This is my second entry for fear and phobia.

There are two fears and phobias represented by this entry. The first is given away in the title; Arachnophobia - the fear of spiders. Though not the only Ferrari named spider (a colloquial term used for two seater light weight roadster) The Ferrari 250 GT SWB California Spider is probably the most famous, and certainly now one of the most expensive. A recent sale of a Spider previously owned by James Coburn for US$ 10.9 Million.A near record for any car, though considered over priced in the market.

The second fear or phobia represented here is that of an infuriated parent.

Ferris: "Dude, you killed the car!"

One of the famous lines from Ferris Bueller's Day Off, a cult teen film from 1986 in which Ferris convinces his frind Cameron Frye, that they should take his father's classic Ferrari for a day on the town. After accumulating many miles, which they are unable to rewind by running the car in reverse on stands, Cameron damages the car by kicking its nose as an expression of his resentment of his father's priorities. After a pause to reflect on the minor damage he has done, the stands collapse, sending the car roaring backwards out the window and down may dozens of feet into the forest below the house.

"Dude, you killed the car!"

At the price paid for the car mentioned above, I'd be pretty terrified of my father too.

Fortunately, no real Ferraris were harmed in the making of this movie. Much of the driving was done using a fibre-glassed replica on an MGB chassis.

Ferrari 250 GT SWB California Spider

The Ferrari was quite something at the time, though technically, engine apart, was quite a conventional vehicle.

It has been named one of the more beautiful of Ferraris, helping increase values of cars that enter the collector market. The car definitely captures the classic sports car feel. released in 1961, the SWB California was on of four road going open topped 250 GT variants, following on form the earlier LWB and Cabriolet variants from 1957 and 1959. The car war succeeded by the 275 GTS, a slightly softer, but more usable car.

If I killed the car, I would be afraid of whoever it belonged to. If I owned one, I be afraid to drive it anywhere.

I may have entered my ladder truck for the challenge, but I still decided to also build one of the cars that I first thought about when I read the challenge, simply because it's such a nice car and an entertaining build: a black cat (a Jaguar Mk 2)

The Black Cat by Mad physicist

In much of Europe a black cat crossing your path is considered a bad omen, probably because historically black cats were associated with witchcraft. I decided to read up on this particular superstition and much to my surprise found in the wikipedia entry on black cats that in the UK and Ireland, black cats are actually associated with good fortune!

It's a good thing that I don't tend to take any of this seriously or I'd be getting seriously confused ;-)

RUYLO

Peanuts in the shell is part of an American racing superstition. I imagine this car with a French or Asian Driver. It wins all the races because the Americans are afraid to race with it. The car gets in accidents all the time, but keeps coming back. Fans love to see the wrecks, but the compitition stays clear for fear of death.

The blower is a magnet piece. It would look better (no studs) from all angles at 4 wide, but i wanted extra wide tires so I went with 6 exposed instead. The peanut was pasted in with photoshop as I don't have an available printer for decals.

So here it is. My entry concerns chiroptophobia, or the fear of bats. We all know that Batman was inspired to use the symbol of the bat to strike fear into the hearts of lowlifes and villains. Plus, he always has the coolest cars. What better way to enter the Fear and Loathing challenge than with another Batmobile.

Here's my entry: Ford Shelby GT500 Super Snake
Shelby GT500 Super Snake
Well, my entry for the 13th challenge presents two kind of fears(in my opinion)... 1st one is the fear of snakes since the name of this car is GT500 Super Snake.. as we know a lot of people scare of snakes specially the Cobras and the Anacondas! And for who don't know the emblem on the trunk and the front grill shows the Cobra snake..
2nd kind of fear here is the fear of excessive massive speed! Specially when it comes from an aggressive super-charged V8 modified engine(+600 HP) which placed under the hood of this monster car.. well I think the aggressive look of this car itself makes kids cry ;p
One last thing I'd like to add an extra kind of fear here: the fear of having HEART ATTACKS while building this disturbing car in LEGO! ;p JK… It wasn't an easy trip… that was my hardest model by far.. so I hope you guys like it specially that LUGNuts contains some of the best car builders in the world… finally I had so much fun building this entry to LUGNuts group(it's my first entry to a challenge here).. thx for sharing something like these challenges with us >>> peace.. Damn guys! Apple Pie, you were doing so well for awhile, what happened? Your friends look up to you. They see you acting a certain way, then they follow suit...that's why I'm depending on you to behave. Be cool, refined, and respectful like the other builders here and you'll find this whole LUGNuts thing to be a happy and rewarding experience. I was just as excited about Firas' Mustang as you are. What I admired most was in the write-up he mentioned that this was a very difficult build, nothing came easy. That is the mark of someone who is learning and growing as a builder and the results has paid off big time! No one should get too comfortable with their building...as soon as everything is done easily, then you've stopped learning and growing. But to say he is better than anyone else in the group...that's just immature.
We're a group of Lego car builders, but I bet you didn't know that within our ranks...some of the more silent members are real professional photographers, lego bloggers, and automotive journalists. They feature us in their blogs and magazines occasionally. Also, I can say without a doubt that representatives from the Lego Corp. has seen and regularly follow our challenges. So for their sake and for the ultimate survival of LUGNuts, lets all keep the trash talk out of our posts and challenges.

the fact that time is taken to reproduce or create a car in Legos is mind blowing. All of them have my kudos.

I could play favorites but I won't because after all "Art is in the eye of the beholder" and what one thinks is crap, another might think Picasso. As demonstrated time and again by photos I think are awesome - some people think are under cropped, over exposed, etc.

Be respectful of that.

The new job is taking its toll... Another month of living out of a suitcase has left me no time to build. The only building I did this month was virtual and that has since been destroyed when my hard drive died.
When doing some research I came across the Phobia list and was amazed to find that there is such a thing as Dutchphobia... Me being Dutch meant I just had to do something with it.
The car I had decided to build is the most fearsome Dutch car of all time, the DAF Twin Turbo X1. For those of you not familiar with the Dakar rally, this is a rally truck with two 500+bhp turbo engines, one for each axle. The top speed of this monster was reported to be around 225kph (140mph for you non-metrics ;-)
In this video you can see it overtaking Ari Vatanen in a Peugeot 405 rally car...
Unfortunately I didn't have the time in November. I hope to get a chance to have a go in the christmas holidays...

Duq...that video looks exciting as hell! It looks like it would be a phenomenal build. I have the next two challenges already stored on my desktop and unfortunately the rules of the next challenge may nix your DAF Twin Turbo...unless it has a couple of extras of a certain feature. You'll see what I mean when we get there. But January's challenge will certainly allow it...or you can build it anytime you want without pertaining to a challenge.

While we're on the subject of things that could have been...

Its not like me to share my ideas before its time...but I had an idea for a second entry that is too perfect to pass up for this particular challenge. Unfortunately I wont have time to build it. I'm offering the idea to you speedy builders, if you want to take it on in the few days before the challenge ends. The idea is James Dean's death car...a George Barris designed silver gray 1955 Porsche called "Little Bastard". The car is said to be the unluckiest, most cursed car ever made. Even before the long string of deaths and injuries caused by the car, Barris said the vehicle seemed to give off "a weird feeling of an impending doom". He proved to be right in a big way. Even after killing James Dean, pieces of the wreck killed or injured no less than a dozen people, the warehouse where the car was later stored in burned down saving only the car...which later up and disappeared never to be found again.

You can read up on The Curse of James Dean here
www.underworldtales.com/dean.htm
www.paralumun.com/ghostcurse.htm
...and variations of the tale exist all over the web.

Part of my reasoning for not building it...aside from time restrains...turns out to be my own superstitions and not wanting to temp fate in building a replica of this cursed vehicle.
Sometimes...superstition is a powerful thing.

Apple-Pie, it's OK. You've apologised and as far as I am concerned, that means it's history. Fear of Dutchness?! I'm stumped!
I remember the DAF Turbo Twin. It had two engines of 600 BHP each and could do more than 200km/h. Quite a beast. At the time I actually built a model of it, but badly I never took pictures. It wasn't without its share of bad luck, I'm afraid. In the 1988 Dakar rally, one of the two trucks entered crashed, killing the navigator and seriously wounding the other two occupants. DAF withdrew from Rally racing after that.

I really like the 550 Spider, but would rather finish me helicopter this weekend. I wouldn't be surprised if LEGO 911 can whip one togther, though.

Aaron (-_-) says:

This entry shouldn't exist, or at least it wasn't supposed to. When Lino first announced this challenge I racked my brain for ideas and this mental image of a monkey driving a car with a terrified passenger kept popping in there. As hard as I tried to forget about it all I could think of was this image. After a couple of weeks I gave up on this challenge and proceeded to build other things. This build itself started out as a military build but I was unable to control the beast and lo and behold this was my final product. So here it is representing amaxomaimouphobia the fear of riding in cars with monkeys, a mixture of amaxophobia the fear of riding in cars coupled with maimouphobia the fear of monkeys.
Amaxomaimouphobia
After some thought the build itself represents another fear, that of not being able to control ones own actions. Thanks for listening to me ramble hope this will get the monkey off my back. (Sorry for the pun but I had to)

amphicar

I tried to build this years ago when I was in school, but got really discouraged by my grungie white pieces. Now that I have no photo-shop-shame I feel I can share the rebuild with all my dirty studs out, conquering my studphobia. A larger model that better references the scale, curves, fins, and details of the original Amphicar will hopefully be submitted to a future lugnut challenge. Its only a babystep of 7-wide from my last entry of 6, but hopefully my next entry will show more progress.

Reading over the list phobias I remembered my own from rollercoasters to honeycombs. All the spine tingling body freezing horror at the sight of such things when I was younger. I'd just imagine them as I read over list for inspiration.

Imagine yourself stuck in this little German built, British underpowered, open air, floating machine. It floats so low in the water it feels like it will eventually sink! One of a kind and so strange it seems impossible to believe that it works. Step inside. I dare you to take a ride. In my lego AMPHICAR!

I've explained the choice of the car in a post a few days ago. Because of the name I figured Tiny Turbo scale would be fitting so here's the Mighty Tiny DAF Turbo Twin X1 Rally truck:

lego911  Pro User  says:

Hi All,

Sorry for the delay to send up my final posts.

Many of you have already had a look at these, but they were designed for the theme. I'll make up a work Megalomaniaphobia, or the fear of those who are megalomaniacs.

My chosen car is the Mercedes-Benz W07 770 Grosser or Grand Mercedes. One of the first products from the newly combined Daimler and Benz concern, the 1930 770 Grosser was the largest Mercedes-Benz model built. A massive 7.7 litre straight eight engine was used (with optional supercharger) and a grand wheelbase of 3.75 metres.

It would be easy to say that all owners of this massive automobile were likely to have been megalomaniacs. The two distinct cars that I have built are famous for their particular owners (especially within the context of their historical circumstances) and also for being on display at the Daimler-Benz Museum in Stuttgart.

The first is the car of Kaiser Wilhelm II of Prussia, Emperor of Germany (to 1918) used whilst in exile. Ascending the throne at a young age, Wilhelm II sought to assert Prussian (and Prussian dominated Germany's) political and military influence in Europe. Though all countries involved in WW I were victims of circumstance that dragged them into a conflict they were not directly involved with, Wilhelm II's manufacturing of this circumstance is not to be underplayed.

After losing control of his country during the war, he abdicated the throne and fled to the Netherlands, in hope of one day being restored to his former position. This of course, did not happen, though he still had the opportunity to enjoy the trappings of his former life, including one of these magnificent vehicles.

Mercedes-Benz W07 770 Grosser Cabriolet Kaiser Wilhelm II

Mercedes-Benz W07 770 Grosser Kaiser Wilhelm II

The second W07 770 belongs to Emperor Hirohito of Japan. Coming from a long line of Japanese Monarchy, being the 124 Emperor. Initial military actions by the Japanese military focused on the invasion of China in 1931. The Emperor's view of this coloured by a long standing view of inferiority placed on the mainland Chinese.

Drawn into the second World War, in part by the lack of success in diplomatic relations and the invasion of Pearl Harbour, the Emperor's megalomania focused on subverting the increasingly power hungry Generals controlling the country's army and navy. Joiing a military axis with the dictatorships in Hitler's Germany and Mussolini's Italy did not help in promoting a peaceful outcome. Unfortunately the Emperor's view of reality relied on the quality of information flowing to the Palace. Over time this bore less relation to reality and clouded the Emperor's judgements as to best lead His country.

In the end of the war, the Emperor was directly responsible for the surrender of Japan to the Allied forces in the Pacific, though only after the two nuclear attacks by the United States on Hiroshima and Nagasaki.

Many citizen of country's in the Pacific region see the Emperor as directly responsible for the genocidal activities during the war. He was never tried as a war criminal, in part, to maintain Japanese cultural pride in spite of defeat.

His ownership of the Mercedes 770 was no doubt in part to his military and diplomatic ties with Germany leading up to the hostilities. The car is displayed at the Daimler-Benz Museum in Stuttgart. It is a truly magnificent car.

Mercedes-Benz W07 770 Grosser Limousine Emperor Hirohito

W07_770_Grosser_04

About the car:

The 770 Grosser was the largest Mercedes-Benz vehicle of the time. The 1930-1938 versions (pictured above) were replaced in 1938 by Series II cars, code-numbered W150 and built through to 1943. Many of these vehicles could be considered to be the vehicle of choice for many more megalomaniacs during the events in Europe under the Nazi regime headed by Adolf Hitler. Series I and II 770 were frequently used as staff cars by Hitler, and also by his Generals and Nazi Party officials.

Both series used predominantly supercharged version of the 7.7 litre straight eight and were formidable autobahn cruisers. For many citizens of Europe, however, their appearance could only bring dread and fear at what their occupants had in mind during this period of cultural and humanitarian terror.

Although these cars are magnificent objects, they remain a powerful image of the time and a material reminder of the personalities and regimes that caused the world and lives of so many individuals so much loss.

On a happier note, my final (late) submission for Challenge 13 is another Spider, this time from Alfa Romeo. Originally released in 1966 as the Alfa Romeo Duetto Spider, this car had a remarkably long career, lasting until 1993. This, in spite of safety and environmental legislation.

The Duetto Spider was part of a long line of moderately powered roadster models from Alfa Romeo. When finally replaced (by a vehicle using similar Spider nomenclature), the Spider had grown its own cosy place in Western culture, in part from its appearance in the 1967 film The Graduate, starring Dustin Hoffman (you might like to add a fear of being hit on by your girlfriend's sexually predatory mother).

The car is a classic in red. The build took the opportunity to use the unusual Lego grille treatment as the Alfa Romeo shield, though the proportions do not quite sit happily. The part has been inclined downward using a hinge.

There have been many other Italian cars from the period using the title Spider in their name. An alternative spelling Spyder can also be used. It refers to a car with no roof, or detachable roof, and no side or rear windows. The term was earlier used for a similarly configured horse drawn carriage of light weight. Thus the term is used to describe lightweight sporting cars with convertible roofs. A similar work speedster is used in Germanic languages, and more broadly, also the term roadster.

This particular vehicle, being a period Alfa Romeo, might also conjure the fear of you car not starting, or alternatively rusting into a pile of red dust. Therefore it is often helpful if the car is painted red in the first place.
