11th Build Challenge...Color Me Strange!

view profile

Lino M is a group administrator Lino M  Pro User  says:

Black, red, yellow, and blue. No two Lego collections are alike…but if you sift through any of our collections, chances are we all have an abundance of black, red, yellow, and blue. They’re the most popular colors Lego makes and…coincidentally the most popular colors in hot rodding and the custom car scene. You can’t go wrong using the classic colors but there are thousands of more creative ways to go…oh so right!

There are some prize winning cars out there that proudly flaunt colors of a different variety…paintjobs with names like Pearlescent Gold, Root Beer Sparkle and Candy Lime Green. Which brings us to this month’s challenge…Color Me Strange! You are to build any car, bike, or truck you‘d like…any scale, any era, any make, model, year or car culture of your choosing. However, instead of reaching for your trusty black, red, yellow, and blue pieces your main color(s) must be from anywhere else in the Lego spectrum. This may propose some problems and/or creative thinking. Other colors may be limiting in the nice curved pieces so maybe a boxier model is in order…or perhaps you’d have to come up with some clever SNOT technique to get those curves and angles just right. Perhaps you may have to combine two or more colors to have enough pieces to construct the whole vehicle…flames, pinstripes, panels, scallops, or mosaic murals are all clever ways to introduce several colors into your model and thereby saving on those rare parts you may not have a lot of.

Can you use any of the aforementioned popular colors? Yes, of course you can. Use them in the engine, chassis, tires, or even a discreet pinstripe…but your main color(s) must be of a different color. You may use variations of the main colors…so dark red and light blue are just fine. Also, to make matters a bit easier, dark grey, light grey, white, tan, and brown are all fairly popular Lego colors but not so prevalent in hot rodding so you may use them.

Build one vehicle or if you’re feeling spritely, build many. Then post them here. Today is Sept. 1st…you have until Oct. 1st until the next challenge. Lets get building, LUGNuts…and let’s show the world we have imaginations and the ability to win the admiration of our peers with a vehicle of a different color! Happy building everyone!

That's going to be tough. All my dark red is already in cars, as is much of my green, and my tan and my greys are earmarked for military projects. Looking at my collection, I reckon it is going to be minifig scale and orange :-)

Oh, and here's the first entry (freshly uploaded today). Feast your eyes on blueish grey and dark red! It's a collaborative build between myself and Ed Diment (Lego Monster).

Anybody who has ever browsed through my car collection will know that, like Gambort, I'm not afraid to use different colours on my cars. I've got cars in green, tan, dark red and white, for instance. In fact, I've built so many cars in that sort of colour lately that my parts supply is dwindling. One colour I didn't use for a car yet is orange, so here it is: my brand new minifig scale builders' van.

Ok,

I'd better get in quick before orange becomes passe!!

By the way, does anyone have orange 1 * 1 plates????

I digress.

Well, this is my first orange car. I've been hanging out to build this for 10 years. You see, this is a model of the first REAL car I owned. A 1974 Renault 16TS in orange. Technically speaking this isn't exactly like that. the first one I owned was a darker, burnt orange colour. The second one I bought, a few years later (for $100) was closer to the lego orange, much yellower.

Anyway, as I have built cars for years, I was somewhat dissappointed that I could never build my groovy car in the right colour. That is, until now.

Call me a fool, but the other night I spent WAY too much money on Lego Factory (why didn't I go to Brinklink?????) to buy weird colour lego. Then, to prove my folly, I built the one car in the one colour that I desperately needed to get out of my system with what I had.

GRRRR.

Anyways, here it is:

Renault16_24

and to prove it is not a colour modified image of the old red car on Brickshelf:

Renault16_34

That's all for now - stay tuned to the weird colour cars that will attempt to justify my life saving.

There shouldn't be a whole lot of competition for this colour combination. I have only ever seen a couple of other sand green cars.

This is a Chevrolet Nomad (2 door wagon) version of the model represented as a Bel Air on the cover of the Ultimate Lego book, and on show at the Lego theme park.

A car by the same name was originally shown, based on an early Corvette, at a point a little earlier in the 1950's (not quite sure which year).

Anyway, enjoy.

Here's my next car in non-standard colours.

This model is of the BMW CSL sports saloon racing car from the late '60s early '70s. Based on the 1960's BMW CSL road cars, specific changes were made to reduce weight and add performance.

The road cars were beautiful and the racers formidable.

The car shown exhibits the Alpina colour scheme used on the race team (and seen in the BMW M colours of today - though I have used black here instead of dark blue - may be rectified soon)

Love it!

Ever since I bought the Ultimate Lego book, I've had to re-look at the level of detail I add to cars (probably still not enough).

I've also wanted to do a 1960ish Impala.

As you would have found, the model quality is really dependant on the quality of the windows and the integration of the rear fins and rear deck.

Not this month, but I'll have to give it a better go soon.

Whateverly...Hey! good to see you 'round these parts! Hope the office renovation is going well.

Everyone...Yes,Whateverly is right...anyone can always contribute to any challenge...even months past the deadline. We'll see it for sure. The only drawback to that is you'd miss out on being included in the challenge round up over at the LUGNuts blog...and as the other challenges are old news to the rest of the world you might be missed by the car or lego blogs that watch us. Some people prefer the anonynimity anyway. However...if you enjoy the spotlight, this gives me good opportunity to spoil a big secret that a few people know anyway. (avert your eyes from further reading if you prefer to be surprised!) The very next challenge after this one will be called "A Year In Review." It'll come with a clever write-up but basicly you can build from any of the previous 11 challenges. The variety of entries would end up being limitless, I'm certain! Even if you're building from a very old challenge, the 12th one will have a fresh new write-up so that means your entries will be spotted by anyone watching the progress of October's challenge. Pretty cool, eh?

CHEVROLET CHEVELLE 1964
This car is based on known race car that competed in FHRA (Finnish Hot Rod Association) Drag Racing series back in early 80's. As you can see it is very 80's styled race car, small front tires and as opposite big rear tires aggressively hanging outside the body. Actually the engine is rather stock and there's not many modifications on the car either except the scoop and small roll cage. 1964 Chevelle is compact and simple car which makes it popular amongst drag racers and hot rodders. And this particular car is very Finnish looking race car.

---

First of all I have to say for my defense, that I don't have almost any of these new fancy colored bricks in my collection, just basic colors which Lego had back in the 80's... So I made a car that has white as a dominant color. Although this car is based on real car it had slightly different color scheme and was sponsored by Esso. Since I don't have Lego Esso bricks I made this car Shell sponsored.

Although '64 Chevelle is a classic, this car is shoebox design at its worst and doesn't make a very interesting model. But I always liked the original race car so much I have always wanted to build this, and now I got it done. Fortunately these basic street rod accessories does make this car much more appealing.

Hi All,

I originally had no intention of building these for the build challenge, but as I was sick in bed reading a book on historically significant cars, there they were.

I was running low on Lego too.

These cars are kind of posted in memorial of one of the engineers from work who died in a motorcycle crash whilst I was in my cosy home building toy cars.

Her name was Kitty Hong - and she will be sorely missed at Ford Australia Product Development.

The restrictions are that it should fit in the theme of the challenge and should be a new model -so not shown on brickshelf or MOCpages before. It's not a contest as such. There are no prizes and no winners. The main rewards are having fun building something that you might not build ordinarily, getting to see other people's interpretation of the same idea and knowing that there are quite a few people (also non-LEGO builders) who get to see your results.

I might be going off-topic here for a bit, but I find it remarkable how high the quality of many of the entries in these challenges is. In some LEGO-building contests people just enter rubbish. We seem to get little or none of that here and I suspect that, perhaps paradoxically, the reason is that we don't actually have a prize. That means that only people who are enthusiasts respond to the challenges.

This is just your friendly mid-month reminder letting you know you have 15 days…plenty of time to pull off something cool. There are lots of great entries here already. I’m learning first hand how limiting using an odd color can be. I’m piecing mine together, then reworking it over and over in order to get my pieces that I barely have enough of to cover my whole vehicle. This stuff is hard! Also I’m having some serious computer issues…maybe a virus. So hopefully I can overcome my problems and have something posted before the deadline. At least its good to see you guys are doing ok. I know there's quite a bit of yellow, blue and red in there (plain colours), but the base colour is white and the overall combination is a bit garish. They really do have these colours, though. I'm actually beginning to get used to the colour schemes on these, but I can imagine that for those of you outside of the UK, 'colour me strange' seems particularly appropriate.

That colour scheme isn't too much of a stretch for us in Canada Ralph. The RCMP vehicles are all white with narrow red, yellow and blue stripes along the side. We used to have the "classic" North American cop cars all royal blue with white doors but they switched several years ago for budget reasons. Great van btw. Five wide seems perfect for this.

What little I know about Canadian police cars indeed suggested that they were rather similar to those South of the border that admittedly can have just about any colour imaginable.
Police cars in The Netherlands tend to be quite bright as well, but it's the Battenburg markings (the checkered pattern) that stand out to me on UK police cars most of all

Realised that for most 'new colours' I still don't have 'enough' Lego ( of the right type of pieces) to build a whole car.

Prime example is the model below. Generally I am very pleased with how this came out. The only lime bricks it uses are plates (1 * 2, 1 * 4, 1 * 1 round, 4 * 4) and bricks (1 * 1, 1 * 2, 1 * 3, and 1 * 4), there's also a couple of angled plates in the nose. Every thing else inside is build to support this outer skin. Meaning its a little bit heavier than the second Miura.

It's a little off topic, perhaps, but I want to clarify a difference between studless building and SNOT. The latter stands for Studs Not On Top, which basically means you use parts with the studs pointing in a direction other than pointing upwards.

Dylan, your hotrod is mainly built with bricks with their studs pointing upwards -not SNOT- but because you covered most of the studs with tiles it's almost studless. Many other people who build studless use SNOT to get rid of the studs rather than sticking tiles onto them. I use a fair bit of SNOT work in some of my aircraft and helicopter models, but don't build studless.

As I have mentioned a number of posts back, I really like Ferrari.

Most Ferraris are red, but some are not.

Here are a couple of early sports racing Ferraris from the 1950s.

The first is the Ferrari Vignale Spider. A number of chassis were built to the same type, and fitted with a variety of bodies in similar form. Different engines were fitted, described by the Ferrari Type Number. In this case the car is a 166MM. The 166 is the cubic capacity in cc, of each of the car's 12 cylinders. In the case of the 166, the total engine capacity is 1995cc or approximately 2.0 litres.

The initials MM stand for Mille Miglia (1000 miles) race around the Italian peninsula. The cars were so named for the six consecutive Ferrari victories between 1948 and 1953. The 166 MM was built between 1951 and 1953.

This particular 166 MM is finished in grey with contrasting dark red. Thisis my first dark red car, a fitting colour for sports racing Ferraris.

Ferrari Vignale Spider

This second Ferrari is by another non-Farina coach builder, Carrozzeria Touring. This series was built on similar chassis to the 166 MM above. Again, many bodies were coach built in small series by Touring.

This particular car, a 212 Export Superleggera, has a Spider (open bodied) style. The 212 represents the single cylinder capacity of the 2562cc (2.6 litre) V12. Other Touring Ferraris used 166 and 340 chassis. The term Superleggera mean 'superlight', and is a term used to describe the method of constructing the body using a network of thin tubes.

This 212 Export Touring Barchetta is finished in a fetching dark blue.

Mad Physicist...I've answered that on one of my comments on my stream but for the benifit of everyone here it deserves a run down here too. That was made with two Harry Potter Knight busses, also two mini knight busses (apparently very rare and now worthless taken out of its packaging), two (or so) little purple monster pod sets and a ziploc bag full of random purple pieces Nathan sold me. This is a result of more than a year of actively collecting purple pieces and I have three friends to thank that were major contributors to my purple collection. (Nathan Proudlove, Todd Kubo, and Wayne Hussey) I had just enough curved pieces to do this with absolutely none to spare...which is why it doesn't have a hood. many show rods are exhibited and often win awards even without the hood so I figured it wouldn't do me any harm. It looks pretty good without, I think. Also there are three motors, two recievers and one battery box. The front jumping motor is tucked underneith the engine seen fairly well in this pic. The side jumping motor is under the seats...the receivers ARE the seats and the rear drive motor and battery box are all crammed in the bed under the bed cover. This was shorter than my previous lowrider and has more motors and moving parts so it proposed a HUGE challenge getting everything to fit.
Sometimes during a jump the battery box hits the rear axle and knocks the connecting leads loose, turning itself off. Maybe flipping the battery box upside down may remedy that problem...I haven't tried yet. I've leaned a lot from the first lowrider but still haven't perfected the art yet. They are heavily dependant on the T-shaped transmissions that apparently can only be found in the walking monkey set and the gears in them tend to wear and grind pretty quickly. My next lowrider...if I do another...I'll try to figure out a gentler jump or figure out a way to get rid of the transmissions.

Here's a car I've wanted to build forever. Its been a bit tricky, and colour me strange wasn't necessarily the best point to try and build it.

But here it is, the 1955 Citroen DS.

The DS was released in 1955 making a contemporary of classic Corvettes and Thunderbirds. The DS was special, however, with oleopnuematic independent suspension, pneumatic power-assisted steering and brakes, clutchless manual transmission and other advanced features. The DS was also the most aerodynamic car in the world, and remained so for decades.

Despite its complexity and cost, more than 1 million DS series cars were made in a production run of 20 years.

The DS is also fondly nicknamed the 'Goddess', due to the fantastic ride comfort, and the car's mystical and alluring beauty.

My model of the DS does not do the car justice, but it has been an itch that I needed to scratch. The model is mainly dark bluish grey, though some of the parts used are the older dark reddish grey (sorry Lino). I have a plan to build another car with the twin headlamps in white, as well as the Safari Estate car and maybe a version of the rare (and even more beautiful) convertibles.

That's a pretty good DS if you ask me.
911, do you ever sleep? You seem to build more in a week than I can manage in a month...

So what you've got here is your 64 Chevrolet Corvair, done in a classic color- white. Not exactly a strange color, but exactly the color I could pull this off with. My dad had one just like this, except with a burgundy interior. That was simply out of the question, but there is an interior, stick shift even! Corvairs kind of got a bad rap, and the really sad part is by the time Ralph Nader's book was released Chevy had already fixed the problem. 64's got a modified suspension, and years 65-69, which are just about the prettiest cars you ever saw, got Corvette suspensions. I myself had a beautiful 66, and I loved it to death.

Hey I'm just new to Lugnuts, don't build cars very often, really... I saw this challenge and wanted to enter my bus.

I did not build it for this challenge. Actually, it participated in the wacky race at the Lowlug (Dutch Lego user group) meeting earlier this month. So feel free to disqualify it... it just fits this challenge too well to not enter it.

So here it is:

I don't have all that much orange, but I just had to do a General Lee before anyone else did. To compensate for the somewhat simplistic build, I put in a springloaded mechanism that makes the car jump... or, put more accurately, crash in all sorts of very satisfying ways.

Edit: that works. Thanks, Mad physicist!

I may not be as prolific as some builders in this group, but I have been fairly active in the last weeks. Here's my fourth and final entry for this this month's challenge.
An Audi TT. This car just looks best in silver or, lacking that, light blueish grey.

Hi Ralph, very nice TT. I have an Audi symbol design that I have been thinking about lately that would go great on this. When I find time, I will make it up and post.

Don't worry about the prolificness - I have been told by the Boss to cool it a bit. (I just got all excited that's all - plus I spent all the money on weird colour Lego)

And, I still love (all) your work.

This is my next entry for colour me strange.

I have always wanted to do a 'Woody', though lacking brown and tan made this somewhat difficult - problem now solved.

We don't have many Woodys here in Australia, I saw a few as a kid from American Diplomatic staff and their Brady Bunch wagons.

My Woody of choice is the 1949 'Spinner' Ford, so called because of the central grille motif reminiscent of the centre of a spinning chrome propeller.

This was the first all-new car from the Ford Motor Company after the Second World War, and reversed the company's sliding financial fortunes.

The 1949 Ford was built in 2-door, 4-door, convertible and Woody wagon forms.

Although the body had wood panelling, the supporting structure was still steel underneath.

My build is in Brown and Tan, and the painted bodywork, dark blue.

Mmm.

I bought the big Lego Collector Series beetle so I could have a supply of dark blue Lego.

I thought that I followed the instructions ok, but somehow it ended up not quite right.

Here is my dark blue/light blue VW 'Charlotte' Beetle. Down scaled to 1:20.5.
