About Puget Sound Bird Bands

Join our band of naturalists, photographers, and researchers who are coordinating observations of birds in the Puget Sound Area that have been marked with color bands on their legs or other field readable tags of the wing or neck.

Researchers use readable bands and color-band combinations to track the birds during migration and dispersal. Resighted bands also contribute to our understanding of survivorship and individual behavior. Below you will find links to a few of the research projects that mark resident and migratory birds of the Puget Sound Area (e.g. Seattle). Each of these sites will tell you more about the research questions for which the birds were marked.

In some cases, you will see letters and/or numbers on the band/s and those are very important to document. Numbers and letters may be laying on their side. So, even if you think a photo isn't fantastic, if the marking is even semi-readable, go ahead and post it! One of our experts may know how make out something or know the person who can.

Also if you cannot get a photo, but can still read the distinguishing characters of the band/s please contact the researchers directly via the emails posted on their web sites. You are also encouraged to report all band sighting to the National Bird Banding Laboratory
www.pwrc.usgs.gov/bbl/.

Rules: Because this is a pretty specialized group, unfortunately, there are rules. Please try to follow them so that we can maintain the integrity of the pool.

1. Only post pictures of wild birds (please photos of pets, zoo birds, homing pigeons, falconry, etc...).

2. Please make sure that the correct date and location is noted somewhere. If we get a positive ID from the legbands, we need to log the date and time and we want that information to be as accurate as possible. Feel absolutely free to post older pictures, just make sure you give the date.

3. Only post pictures that were taken in the following US/Canada locations: Puget Sound (Counties including King, Skagit, Snohomish, Pierce, Thurston, Kitsap, Mason, Jefferson, Clallcam, Whatcom), Strait of Juan de Fuca, British Columbia, Strait of Georgia, Georgia Basin.
