About Washington Parish

Washington Parish is located directly North of New Orleans appoximately 60 miles. It is bordered by Mississippi on the East and North sides, and is positioned in Southeast Louisiana in the part of the state known as the "toe" since the geographical outline of the state resembles a boot. Washington Parish is home to several cities with Bogalusa and Franklinton being the larger ones and Franklinton is Parish Seat. Louisiana is one of the only two states in the union not to call their sections "counties". Louisiana calls their counties "parishes" due to the overall dominant Catholic influence throughout the state. Washinton Parish is also home of the world's largest Free Fair which is held in October each fall at the Franklinton Fair Grounds. Washington Parish's main agricultural resources are dairy farming and watermelon crops. It's largest employer is a paper manufacturer called Temple Inland which for decades went by the name of Crown Zellerbach. Washington Parish also houses one of the state's minimum security prisions.
