Spring 2008 Week One Weekend!

OK, so it took a while to get week one up! But here it is, we'll post a topic for each week for you guys to share and vent. If something else comes up don't hesitate to start another thread!

A bunch of you have started doing layouts of your rooms to figure out flow. This is a great idea and much much easier than just starting to move furniture. Please share what programs are you using and how you like them!

We're pretty casual around here so feel free to post your goals here or on one of the AT posts. But we do find it's much easier to stick to goals when we have them in writing! Also, I'm curious to see what you put out on the street this week. Will you upload photos?

Good Luck my Troopers!

I didn't take photos of everything that went to the local charity, but I did include a stack of books to the library in my little "week one wrap up" collage. :) I was already in clutter busting mode when I signed up for the cure, so tons of stuff was already heading out the door.

I love the layouts too!

Oh, I could use a little input about what to do with the walls in my living room... photo here. It's one of the things I would like to change.

I had lots of success purging when we moved into our condo at the beginning of the year, so it is nice not to have to worry too much about decluttering this time around. I have been thinking a lot about how to make our bedroom more inviting and relaxing, not just a place to crash. My biggest obstacle is dealing with two concrete walls (window wall and bed wall). I have no idea how to attach any type of decoration to them.

My goal for the room is to give it a sort of "Bali" feel -- based on the bamboo shades from my last place and a bit of fabric I used to have hanging on a wall that I have yet to find since moving. Ideas for paint color, makeshift headboard, and/or small dresser are greatly appreciated.

I used the trial version of the 2D floor plan tool at www.icovia.com.
And I just took a screenshot when I was finished, since you can't save or print with the trial version. It's a pretty simple program to use, especially if you don't have a lot of/feel like fussing with flat surface decorations.
I don't think I posted my floor plans here... I should do that, even though I already decided on one and re-arranged my room accordingly. :)

I didn't put anything out on the street, but I was able to sell my old desk to someone on craigslist. It was the first time I had every sold anything online (usually I just buy), so I was excited that everything worked out! I'll upload my old desk and the new desk that I replaced it with.

I used MS Visio -- but I already had access to it. If you don't already have MS VIsio, not sure it's a realistic option.

I put my old sofa up on Freecycle (it is the one with the red cover in my photos) and got it out of here! Also, I put my kitchen sink out on the curb and someone got it (the cure came in the middle of my redoing the kitchen counters)!

Thanks for the floor plan tool recommendation sparklerawk, I may have to try that. I think there is only one layout for my daughters room with the way her new sofa bed HAS TO go since it wont fit underneath her loft bed like I envisioned, but I'd love to try to see if there are other options {on paper, rather than trying to muscle everything around only to have it not work}.

We're getting rid of the daughters old bed that was in her room. Plus a bunch of other odds and ends. Dolls she's outgrown etc. That's what I've been working on so far.

I used the floor plan tool icovia.com, too.

I am putting some chairs that I never use in my building free pile.

Mostly, I just need to do some major decluttering.

I took a laundry sorter to goodwill - it was taking up prime square footage in my bedroom, since it wouldn't fit in the closet. I was not even using it for laundry, it was more of a catch-all for clothes that needed to be put away.

My ex bought it, so it also took some negative energy with it when it left.

My cure is turning into more of a whole home cure. We've only lived here for 2 months and I thought I had taken the principles of AT into account when I was setting up, but now I'm noticing things all over that need to be done. A whole home cure will get this place to a point where I can focus on defining my style next time around. I've posted some more photos from the apartment -- ideas are always welcome!

Okay, I knew that our bedroom was pretty sad, but until I took the photos, I guess I didn't really how terrible it looks. Wow. I have some work ahead of me. :)

There's a small chest next to the bed that's not visible from the photos that will be exiting the room. And I want to re-think our "dressers" and the way we organize our clothes so that it helps us be neater (our default way of organizing is the horizontal method). Plus, we're so overdue for real curtains (enough of the rental standard white mini-blinds).

crawford153-

Isn't it funny how everything looks different once it's photographed?
I wish I'd looked at my apartment through a lens sooner!

We're putting out a great flea market painting that we just can't keep because it smells so badly of smoke, and a custom made red painted floating shelf that the previous tenant left - it's great but we just don't have anywhere to put it.

I took clothes to wasteland and crossroads today and made $20. Not too bad considering I was just going to donate them anyway. the rest went to out of the closet along with a hand crank ice cream maker that I used once (and that was enough).

Over the weekend, I bought daffodils for the downstairs, and small calla lilies for the upstairs bathroom. Daffodils were $3.50 for a bunch of 20 at Whole Foods and $11 for 10 stems of calla lilies.

I moved my table based on comments I got, and put stand-ins for the suggested locations of new chairs, so my 10 min sitting in a new part of the house was sitting at the table in its new place, and in the stand-in chairs in the living room. I'm not sure about the table yet, maybe I'm just not used to it; but I do like the extra space it gives me for the living room.

The big task I wanted to accomplish was moving everything from my bedroom and vacuuming, including baseboards. Yeah, didn't get to it. I won't get much done as far as cleaning the whole kitchen this week either as I'm out of town, so I'm bummed and feel 'behind'. I did sweep the kitchen and bathrooms at least. :-)

crawford153 and bunnyAT - I agree! Appearance in photos is way different. I took a few of my bedroom and was surprised. It has more personality in person!

Curing Lilla says:

It seems that I am behind but it's only because I've spent the first three weeks digging out from under all of our clutter. I am happy to say that I am finally ahead of it and am now ready to move on. For the first time in a long time I'm proud of how our living room looks, and I'm ready to show it the lovin' it deserves.

I happily said goodbye to 2 giant stereos, a foot-spa thing, spare stroller, an old pc and a ton of clothes. There is also a mini-fridge for sale on Craigslist which will hopefully be gone this weekend. I still have a few more rooms to get through, but it is SO encouraging to see how nicely things are coming together.

Curing Lilla - that sounds like great progress! I'm jealous. :-) I've identified a lot of things for the out box, but not much has actually left the house yet. And, nothing that will make as big of an impact as the items you've listed.

Thanks sandiegoAT! I've had a couple of things working in my favor. First, my sister-in-law is coming tomorrow with her husband and their 5mo daughter. Nothing will make you bust your a** like the threat of an in-law visit. It also helps that I live just down the street from an Out of the Closet (LA thrift store).
