Low-Budget Cure Ideas/Support

So we don't have the money to create our dream homes. We can still make our homes happier! Come and share your low-budget Cure ideas here...

I'll start.

* In the week 1 assignments, they ask us to "remove one item from your apartment." Sell it on ebay/craigslist/amazon, and if you make enough, use that money to buy your fresh flowers. Of course, that approach won't work every week, so...
* Buy living flowers or some other kind of potted plant. These will last longer than a week. Uh, hopefully.
* They also ask us to look into earth-friendly cleaning products. I suggest eschewing as many cleaning products as possible in favor of baking soda and/or vinegar.

Any other ideas to help us on week one?

Certain flowers last longer than others...try choosing a bunch that is a two weeker.

Also some grocery stores sell 'overstock' flowers for much less $$. Our old grocery store would have a bin of flower odds and ends for around $3 a bunch.

Simple Green is a cheap cleaning product and I think it is "green". You get it in the automotive aisle in Walmart in concentrated form.

Yay, I am all for the low-budget ideas. I just picked up a few new house plants at Target (along with the potting soil) for just $20. They may be small now, but they'll grow.

I've never had much of a green thumb, but the woman who lives at the front of my building is pretty nice about letting me cut a few flowers from her garden. There's also the cheap grower's bouquets from Home Depot and Trader Joe's flowers that are usually less than $6. The 99¢ Store generally has some decent simple vases.

I do plan on purchasing an Ikea or Craigslist couch and making a cover for from whatever I can find in the fabric district.

As for green cleaner, I already use vineger for most things, except for things that need bleaching.

Aside from flowers and cleaning supplies, work with what you already have! Don't be afraid to re-arrange your furniture. You'd be surprise how much you can brighten up a room simply by moving a few things around.

In terms of cheap plants I've been wanting to do a succulent swap wince they're so easy to propogate. Anyone live in venice and need some cuttings? Or have some to trade?

I like potted orchids that are blooming as an inexpensive flower idea. Orchids in bloom last a long long time (several weeks). I treat them like cut flowers, so even if you can't keep an orchid alive and force it to rebloom, consider buying an orchid plant.

I see them at Trader Joes, and Home Depot or local nursery sometimes in the $10-$20 range (so similar to a bouquet of flowers that lasts a week!). Choose one where the lower flowers on the spike are open, and the upper flowers are opening buds, so you can maximize it's flowering life in your house.

After it blooms, give it to a friend who can care for orchids, or craigslist etc. Or try to maintain it yourself and toss it when it dies. Recycle the plastic pot by returning it to a local nursery.

Also, Trader Joes. I bought a bunch of calla lilies and leaves (10 stems) for $3.50 the other day. They last 5-8 days.

Our mantra is "shop at home"! Before you go out to buy something, see if there is something already in your house that you can use to create what you want. :) Use what you have creatively, and you might just like it even better than buying something new.

TJs alert - daffodils for $1.29 plus tax. Get the bunch with the tightest buds. Cut the stems and put them in water and you can watch them open. They were 3.99 last week ... so ... :D yay! cheap flowers!

I'm not doing the flowers thing. I'd much rather buy a new plant every week. Tonight I bought a bamboo plant thing. It was like $5. They had smaller ones for $2.

I also plan on getting some cuttings from a few plants at work and trying those out.

Frankly, if I get flowers my cat is likely to knock them over, and I don't have too many high places I can put them :P

I plan on shopping at thrift stores and keeping an eye on freecycle and craigslist.

aymlis -

I totally relate to the cat knocking flowers over. I have one tall shelf/ledge in my loft that the cats cant get to, and if I forget to put the vase up there, it ends up on the floor!

This may not be a week one item, but wanted to mention it - I love checking the clearance sales and just found some awesome art glass pendant light fixtures on clearance at Home Depot for $19. I've always loved those and never wanted to pay the high prices so now I have some for the kitchen, hallway and entry, plus another clearance fixture for the dining room!
