getting furniture custom made?

Does anybody know what getting small furniture custom made is like? Does it invariably cost an arm and a leg?

I have very specific ideas for two pieces that I want-- a waist-high landing strip bookshelf/table (the shelves for shoes), and an "entertainment center" that could fit our small tv, dvd, and stereo, going vertically rather than horizontally. I haven't found either of these so far.

I have a few pieces of custom furniture, which were made by friends, and were paid for by swapping "time, materials, and skills" rather than with money. That said, I do think it is possible to get things custom made without spending an arm and a leg, but anything custom will cost significantly more than the same thing ready-made.

(I personally do custom jewelry and custom sewing, and need to sometimes explain to people that I live here, not in some country on the other side of the planet with lower cost of living, and that explains my prices)

I would suggest looking around for local woodworkers, perhaps through craigslist, or farmers or craft markets, and see if you can find someone who works in the style you like and that is interested in your project. There may be a woodworkers guild in your city, or various woodworking schools; places like that would be where I would look were I needing such work done. Depending on the style you want, you might even find a handyman/carpenter could build your projects.

Good luck!
