About Chicago Street Photography.
Rather than hard and fast rules, I propose a few guidelines distilled from what I have found to be the essence of good street photography:
1.) Images made in PUBLIC spaces (while it still exists)
- this can mean streets, sidewalks, plazas, and also parks, festivals, rallies and protests, alleys, beaches
- look here for a tutorial on public space
2.) Photographer and the subject should be active participants in the construction of the situation
- no stalker shots, loser.
- the subject does not necessarily need to be consciously aware of the photographer. as well, the subject does not always have to be human, or even a sentient lifeform, for that matter.
- public space should also figure as a subject in the image, otherwise what you have is portraiture, which should be posted elsewhere
- on the art of constructing situations
3.) Photographs from the city of Chicago (within municipal boundaries) only, please. And more from the neighborhoods and less from downtown would be great.
Violators will be thrown into the river, the Calumet River.
cheers,
sam
