Automatically Geotag photos?
|
Hi All,
Is there a way (that anyone knows) of automatically geotagging pictures on my 400d? like some kind of plugin adaptor or software/hardware upgrade? i always place all my pictures on the maps here, but sometimes struggle to figure out where exactly i was, because the maps aren't wonderfully detailed and I have a habit of wandering off into the middle of nowhere!
Any ideas?
cheers guys,
Mike

You need a GPS logging device of some sort. You can buy some small devices dedicated to just this.
I've just had a Nokia N95 which has built in GPS, so I've been playing around with the supplied sport tracker software, export the days walk as a gpx file, and then use some software on the mac which works out the nearest GPS data to the time the photo was taken and applies that to the raw file.
You do then have to watch how you upload the pics, as some of the uploaders actually strip out the GPS data at upload, but I know the Lightroom plug in doesn't.

I am using a Magellan handheld GPS for that with downloader pro from "breeze systems" (http://www.breezesys.com/)) to download the photos to the computer. When you start moving, make sure the GPS is in tracking mode so it records all your travel. When you are ready to download your images to your computer, go in the downloader pro options and indicate where your GPS tracklog is (either you previously put it in a computer folder or the GPS is attached to the computer as an external storage device. Downloader pro will then match the photos timestamps with the GPS tracks and embed the data in the exif info. You absolutely need though to manually sync the clock of your camera and GPS otherwise you tags won't be precise. You don't need the latest and greatest GPS for that; I paid 120$CAN at Walmart.
