A Windows XP RAW thumbnail viewer that works

I don't know about everyone else, but I downloaded Microsoft's RAW thumbnail viewer and found it broken and useless. But I found this one, at the link above, which actually works. After you install it, you can see your .cr2 files in Windows Explorer. It's amazing that Microsoft can't come up with one of these, but some other company can just put one out that works really well.

The only thing you'll have to deal with is right after installation....either you'll have to register with Arcsoft (b/c you can't get rid of the register window), or you'll have to CTRL-ALT-DEL, and stop ArcRegister from running. But that's the only time you'll have to deal with that. Ah, the joys of Windows. Enjoy.

I didn't know it was on Canon's site. As for how it's different from ZB, ZB is a standalone application that allows you to view and edit the raw files. This plugin allows you to see thumbnails of your RAW files in Windows Explorer (like when you click on My Computer)....XP can show you thumbnails of your JPEGS, but not your RAW files,. So if you only want to open one RAW file, and you wan to know which pic you're opening, you can now from My Computer. With ZB, when you click on a single RAW file, they all open in ZB.

It's useful for people who don't use ZB....those, for instance, who use Photoshop, or UFRaw to do their files.

I like the idea. I don't want another photo editing program on my computer, but I'd love RAW thumbnails. Cheers for the link mate.

Alternatively, get a mac...
RAW files are displayed in the Finder (files explorer) like any other image, you can even see a full size preview without any other application...

is this a usefull help or a childish attempt to pimp a mac?
C'mon you can't propose to buy another computer as suggestion to solve this problem...

Guilhem....ok, some of us are not getting Macs. And there's one important difference between this link, and your Macs....the price.

yeah i'm using this plug in too... but i actually had another one before that was even better because it rotated the thumbnails automaticly... but accidently deleted it and i cant find it anymore :( the arcsoft plug in is much faster though...

oh and microsoft is the lamest company ever for not coming up with this themselves!

stroop....that';s what the MS raw viewer was supposed to accomplish....but every time I install it, and try to load a RAW file into the Windows viewer, I get "Failed to load image!". That's why I went out and found the Arcsoft plugin.

thats because youre using an xti... the plug in was made shortly before its release. it works with the xt... microsoft just never made an update for their viewer... haha

Rolf.....that's just proof that Microsoft is too big and slow to step up to the plate, or this is just not on their important list. Other people do certain things better and faster than Microsoft does.

I have an XTi...but the Arcsoft viewer will not show me the thumbnails. It shows the thumbnails for images taken with my old XT just fine though.

Any ideas?

ReiMontana.......Are you looking at the thumbnails that are still sitting on your CF? The ones on the CF won't show...you have to put them on the h/d to see them.

Also, make sure that when you have Windows Explorer up, you're viewing the files as Thumbnails (main menu > View > Thumbnails), and the pics will show up.

ReiMontana.....Do you have the Microsoft raw viewer installed? If so uninstall it. Second try reinstalling the ArcSoft program. I had the same problem that fixed it

I couldn't even afford a mac when I was willing to spend several hundred on a computer. I surely couldn't afford it when I'm willing to spend $0 on a free thumbnail viewer...

Great find! Thanks for recommending this.

One tip: This program adds a couple of ugly and semi-annoying items to the context-menus of various image file types. To get rid of these, open up RegEdit and navigate to:

HKEY_CLASSES_ROOT\*\shellex\ContextMenuHandlers

From there, just delete the "ArcSoft" key.

Voila! The menu items are gone, and the Explorer thumbnails still work fine.

Nifty Plugin but I don't like the "Register with Arcsoft" window that pops up and can't be closed short of using Task Manager.

ReiMontana says:

...more trouble with thumbnails:
Uninstalled the Windows tool...which hung on the uninstall, so I rebooted and then removed it manually via regestry edits and another reboot to before I could remove the locked files from C-Drive. I also uninstalled the ArcSoft tool, including the remaining registry entry left behind. Rebooted. Downloaded the ArcSoft again and reinstalled/re-registered.

Now none of the raw thumbnails will display (XT nor XTi) They also would not display before removing ArcSoft which is why I chose to uninstall it and try again.

All I'm left with is a blank thumbnail with the little blue Photoshop icon.

Argggh! I give up!
