E and L insurance?? they are the cheapest quote i found so far, im really paranoid about getting the right insurance, get the feeling it can be like phone insurance most of them you pay for and can never be used to claim because they have so many get out clauses.

Out of interest why don't you want it on your house insurance?!
i've got my kit covered on my house insurance. everything is covered, both when at home and out and about (inc overseas or in the car). Its covered for accidental damage, incase i am clumsy. As no one element is worth over £1000 (my total kit is in the region of £3k+) they didn't need me to list everything or put any special charges on the policy. Plus it was all within the current policy premium. (i do know there will be a £50 excess if i ever need to claim)
As i've not claimed i cant give a full review. I think whether its house / car / camera insurance you can only really give a proper review once you've been through the claims procedure.
I have claimed with direct line and would NEVER use them ever again. However i have been through the Halifax for building insurance and it was a breeze to get sorted (as opposed to the storm that caused the damage), and would recommend them.
Insurance companies are getting clever, and CHEAP usually means NOT FULLY COVERED. Ask as many questions as you can when ringing, and ask for written confirmation of the answers in plain english when taking up the policy.

I gather if i had seperate insurance id be more likely to use it as unlike on my home policy any claim made will put the policy up which covers more than just contents, our house has a habit of getting hit by lorrys, (luckily not since we bought it touch wood). so as you can see i would not like this to be claimed against as our house is more important to insure. (if i make sense).
Also Ive never had to claim ANY insurance and dont quite know how easy or hard it is to get a settlement.

The E & L sounds quite pricey. I've been using a seperate all risks policy from the CIS, and I reckon it's about half of what they charge (I've got various bits and bobs covered under it so can't do a direct comparison), £50 excess again, and found them very good.

Are there any cheap/good policies for theft? I'm not really interested in accidental damage as I am fairly careful, but I will be shooting in some dodgey places!

i'm with e and l, 40 quid for the year and full risk, worldwide cover on everything down to my remote and camera bag. hopefully i won't have to make a claim to test the insurance anytime soon!

A house getting hit by a lorry would be on the lorry companys insurance surely?!
i can see your thinking but any lose in no claims discount IF you had to claim, would probably be less than you will BE forking out if you get a separate policy?!
When we claimed for some building stuff it didn't effect our no claims, and it made no difference to our contents insurance.
Other posts suggest E&I though so is really your call?

not changing the subject but yeah i would have thought so too but they have a habit of clipping the corner and carrying on without stopping. but yeah i was thinking og e and l.
I just figure im more likely to claim on accidental with a dslr as A) im heavy handed and clumsy lol and B) I have a 5 month old baby boy which will soon be crawling and into everything
