Dead pixel or something on the sensor?

view profile

I think I had a pixel on my sensor die tonight. I was taking some night shots and when I was processing them I noticed something odd. When I magnified it looks like a dead pixel (500%). I checked all the pictures I took tonight and if I go to the same spot each time I can see the same same.

I checked the pictures I took yesterday and the day before and there doesn't seem to be anything there. So whatever happened, happened today.

I decided to do a dead pixel test and took a series of shots with the lens cap on at different shutter speeds (8 shots from 1/60 to 30 seconds) and I can't see a dead pixel at all, the test showed no hot pixels or dead pixels.

Then I took another shot of the wall at home and sure enough there was the same "dead" pixel.

So is it a dead pixel or something on the sensor?

If it is a dead pixel, will Canon fix it? My 400D is a little over a month old.

Sorry for the large image but it is only one pixel so I had to go large.

SOB I think I fixed it!!

I did a search and found a thread that discussed this in the 400D:

www.dpchallenge.com/forum.php?action=read&FORUM_THREA...

Here's the part that I tried:

1) Put lens or camera cap on, go to a dark room to be sure if you want
2) Take JPG+RAW shot, maybe at different ISO and shutter speeds, one could be 30 sec/ISO 1600
3) Press menu, go to Settings 2 tab, and press sensor Cleaning: Manual, then OK. Wait for 30 seconds or more (is this necessary?) The mirror inside opens, but since you are not removing dust, this has really no effect, but it seems that after doing this, the camera remaps the dead pixels.
4) Take another JPG+RAW shot, compare with shots from 2) - same shutter and ISO

Lo and behold it seemed to work. I took a series of shots and I can't find that spot again. So either it was something on the sensor (despite repeated automatic cleanings) or it really did remap the sensor.

Opinions anyone?

That could be a hot pixel.
this is due to the fact that every pixel sensitivity might not be the same (actually it will always be different, this is due to what's called "Process variation" in Semiconductor fabrication, it's a whole probabilistic issue) so, out of the 10 megapixels, there are always a few that is more sensitive. and when you expose for a long time, they sometimes got "stuck" at a high state. usually happen when you do long exposure.

and what u posted there is indeed an interesting method to ask the camera to remap those. i should try that too on my GF's 350D, her camera got quite a bit of hot pixels!

Also i found that Photoshop CS, when reading in raw file, it seems to be doing a rather good job remove those if there aren't too many.

Cheers!

EDIT: just tried, didn't work for me :(

Glad I could help out rafalweb - believe me I know your pain, and your fear that it might come back.

Best thing we can hope for is that we really have performed a crude sensor re-map and keep out fingers crossed :)

europa70, you really made my day; I just got my digital rebel for xmas and all the shots I've taken in the past three days had a strange pixel that looked exactly like the one in your example picture... I was totally heartbroken.... until I found this thread! The steps you outlined worked perfectly for me, no more dead/hot/annoying-whatever-you-call-it pixel. thankyouthankyouthankyouthankyou!!!!

I've had the same phenomenon since I bought my 400D (noticed just recently when doing some night shooting) and was starting to get very frustrated ;)

The routine you described above solved my problem 100% ! Thanks a million!

I'm so glad this helped you guys out. Only if you've had this happen to you can you understand the frustration so finding a solution was great.

Glad I could help.

I also had a dead pixel as opposed to a hot pixel. I had to send it it to have it fixed. I'll try the instructions on the g9 to see if that will help. Otherwise I will now have to send that in. While I can usually fix it in photoshop, sometimes it is just in the wrong place. Thanks for the guidance.

Just thought I'd chime in and say that i had the same problem with the white pixel and this technique worked for me (so far). Funny thing is, the problem only showed up in Canon DPP, and NOT Photoshop, PS Lightroom or Breezebrowser. *Shrug* Either way, it's not there now thanks to this 'undocumented method'. Hope it stays away.

Cheers!

No problem. Every now and then this thread pops up and I'm always glad when it helps someone else out. It's a sick feeling to find a dead pixel :)

Yes it is, especially when you are new to photography and the DSLR world. This is my first real camera, and it was gut wrenching when I saw that lone purple pixel floating in all of my images. Thanks again!

I took some pictures at a wedding yesterday with my XTI and noticed a red dot on one of my pictures. Lo and behold, the red dot has been on all of my pictures since the first day I got the camera! I was pleasantly surprised that this the suggestion on this post worked perfectly! I used bing's search on the following phrase:

canon xti "red dot in pictures"

This was the only result from the search, but I'm glad it worked. Much thanks!

About 2 monthes ago, I started noticing some annoying red pixels that appeared in a lot of night time exposures I took. There were about 5 areas around each dark photo that had the red pixels, but there was only really one that was really big and obvious. After doing the remapping process above, that big red spot dissapeared but some other red speckles remain around the photo. Oh well, I'm happy that big annoying red blotch is gone!

View this one large and look at the area where the note is, that's that big red spot that finally went away!

I have a couple that show up in night shots. I don't care. The spot healing tool in photoshop fixes them in two shakes of a mouse tail...

I've bought a 500D just few days ago and the hot pixel or whatever it is showed up on all the photos I've taken. The routine you described solved that problem. Thanks a lot! :)
