About Plazas de Puerto Rico
The plazas of Puerto Rico are the traditional town squares, the central parks, the village gardens and greens, the centers of the down towns of villages and cities. The are usually surrounded by important governmental, business and religious buildings. They were, and still are, the hubs of the towns. Due to the commercial and urban sprawl that the Island is facing, and the municipal economical restraints, some of the town plazas are loosing their color, their life and, sad to say, their own reason for existence. In the past the town plazas were the gathering places, the meeting spots, the politicians tribunes during contested campaigns and the artistic scenarios during the celebration of the traditional fiestas patronales. They were the places to be to meet people or to relax among friends playing dominoes or just people watching, alone. Lately, efforts are made to rescue these important social and cultural public spaces. Please don't limit yourself to post the ideal postcard photo. Historic photos and those that express social changes are welcome, too. Go ahead! Help us build the largest photographic collection of ALL public plazas of Puerto Rico!
