Ok, I have a dumb question. I downloaded a texture from one of the free sites and tried using it. Unfortunately the size is off, meaning it seems to be too small to completely cover my first layer. When I cut and paste it just fits over the middle of the layer and I have the top and bottom untouched with texture. Do I have to adjust the size of some of these textures for it to fit or ??

Press CTRL - T (on pc not a mac) and you will see all 4 corners have arrows. Drag the arrows in or out to make larger or smaller. Make sure you have the texture exactly or larger than the picture. If theres certain parts of the texture you want in a certain part of your photo just adjust it to lay where you want, than hit enter. Hope that helps.

GREAT Tut!! I wish I would have found this a couple months ago when I started fooling around with textures... but I am a smart cookie and figured it out on my own :0)
Sometimes I will blow the size of my texture layer up so I can move it around over the photo so the most textured spots are where I want them in the photo (so they show up the best.) But this only works for NON vignetted texture layers.

I've found the best way for taking the texture off the areas where I don't want it (subjects face) is to use a gaussian blur. Erasing and using the mask tool also erase the color overlay that the texture provides and it often looks funny.
Instead, make sure you are on the texture layer, and use your lasso tool to make a selection around the area you don't want textured. Then feather your selection for a smooth looking transition. Then apply a gaussian blur to the selection. And tada! The texture is gone, but the color from the texture remains! :)

Just wanted to add.... if you want to make the texture file the same size as your picture that you're applying it to, without resizing it in your photo file....open both files, then with the texture file active, go to IMAGE SIZE, then with the Image Size window open, go up to the WINDOW menu, and scroll down to the bottom where it has both file names listed. Highlight the other image's name. It'll apply your photo's size to the texture file. Then all you have to do is Select All, Copy and Paste into your photo file and carry on with the rest. :-)
By the way, THANK YOU for this tutorial. I did my first photo a few minutes ago, and it turned out awesome. Never knew I could do this, and it's going to work great for me.

Good tutorial. I use textures all the time at work. Playing with the blend modes can get you some other interesting looks depending on the texture.
Blend modes I use most:
Overlay
Multiply - keeps darker colors of texture
Screen - keeps lighter colors of texture
Best way is to just experiment :)
