[Official] 365 Group Moderation level
 |
Short Form: This group is now set to Moderate:
Long Form: For those of you who don't know the history of the issue, back a couple weeks ago, when Flickr introduced video, they also quietly introduced Group moderation levels (restricted, moderate and safe). While this seemed like a good idea on the surface, the net effect of implementation screwed things up on some level or another for a great majority of the admins on flickr. Simply put, we were forced to choose between allowing under 18 year old members and German, Korean, Hong Kong and Singapore members or allowing adult content (essentially artistic nudes). So as not to hamper the creativity of our longstanding members, we chose the latter and as a side effect, the group was not available at all to those not signed into Flickr. But at least it didn't hamper the experience of anyone who had been with the group before the change (in fact, under 18 year olds and Germans were not kicked out)
I spent a great deal of my time the last couple weeks pleading with the Flickr staff, along with several other group admins, trying to get them to implement a solution.
That solution came today.
As of now, Germans and under 18 year old members can see Moderate groups but still can't see Restricted ones. It's a compromise, but I think its one we can probably live with. I believe the group is still inaccessible to Korean, Hong Kong and Singapore members, but there's nothing I can really do about that (and I have no way of testing it, if someone from one of those countries has a spare account, I'd love to have you test it and let me know. I don't advise leaving the group to test as I can't guarantee you'll be able to get back in).
I chose Moderate instead of Restricted
The definitions of Moderate and Restricted are still up in the air, unfortunately. I've been personally complaining to flickr as loud as anyone that this needs to be fixed. But for now, I recommend just TRYING to use your best judgement. I know that's hard. If you post a nude to the group especially, please mark it at least moderate. I'm HOPING that whenever flickr verifies the moderation level settings will be ok still. But I have no way of knowing that for sure. Still, I ask that everyone at least try to be as safe as possible just like always and hope that if we do our best to behave, nothing else bad happens.
Thanks to everyone once more for continuing to make this the best group on Flickr.

Thanks for all of your work, sir! This has not been easy for most group admins.

The one thing that has come up repeatedly on the moderate/restricted level is that breasts and buttocks = moderate, genitalia or sexual acts = restricted.
Which, of course, leaves all sort of fuzzy gray areas, but it probably covers a large number of photos.
Thanks, Mav, for your work interfacing with Flickr staff, since they seemed to actually pay attention to you!

Hey, thank you very much.
I have no idea why us Germans should not be aloud anymore, but THANK YOU very much for your effort.
All the best from Munich.

hrw worcester said "Which, of course, leaves all sort of fuzzy gray areas" as long as your fuzzy gray areas are properly flagged, I think you'll be okay. My fuzzy areas aren't gray (yet) so I think I'll be okay as well.
On a more serious note: Mav- I've read a lot of the help forum posts and certainly your calm, reasoned and well thought out contributions to the topic really helped this whole "rethinking" of the moderation by Flickr. You really are an asset not only to this group, but to Flickr at large. And I, for one, thank you.

Well, none of my nudes will be allowed here anymore since Flickr saw fit to smack me with the restriction hammer. The combination of vague policy regarding the moderation levels and someone's inability to use SafeSearch has resulted in my ENTIRE PHOTOSTREAM being marked as restricted.

i set out to do a completely safe 365days - but a bit of alcohol and you end up posting photo's that i wake up in the morning and think oohh i think maybe that should be moderate..
and on that note whats wrong with frontal nudity anyway - so see it on TV as a sexual education program , i seen genitalia at on video's in high school for Sex Ed -- i dunno i think there is a big difference between seeing genitalia and seeing it 'in action' if you know what i mean.
i dunno , if flickr just done away with all the porn (maybe make a seperate site for it) and only allowed nudity i think it would be better , for atm if anyone wants to venture into doing a full frontal nudity shot it gets thrown as restricted with all the porn and if anyone wants to see a full frontal nudity they have to turn safe search off and not no what the hell will turn up.
Not that ive done a full frontal nude myself .. except one and after 2 days and 11 views i got all embarrassed and it now sits there private only viewable by me.
