I'm an RA in my dorm and we have access to massive paper rolls, giving me all sorts of color options for backdrops in the upcoming months. For this shot, I actually balanced my camera on a 5-bulb medusa lamp that I was using for lighting. Using the flash brought the color out better.
For a further explanation of this photo's content, I suggest going to it's home page.

Went to Michaels and bought a black paper for a solid backdrop and taped it to the wall. As you can see the paper is too small and I didn't know how to utilize light for the portrait I wanted to make! I'm definitely going to watch the podcast so I could learn how to use solid color background! In the meantime here is a set-up shot of my failed attempt...

another week of trying...
For the podcast they asked for what you did to take the picture. Well sadly all i did was pull a chair in front of the blue wall and set the timer.. really the most i did was after the picture was taken. I altered the saturation and the brightness but otherwise the lighting was just the fixtures in the room... crappy ones at that. But i do love this picture!

This one was taken in front of our new white backdrop... I usually use a sort of mottled grey for my ttvs, but I thought I'd give the solid white a try. I really quite liked the result.
"and everything that you ever thought would come true." by jessi. [?]

As far as how I took it... I set up the old camera, which can be seen here, on a chair and put a light stand in front of the backdrop to compose my photo. Then I set up my camera on a tripod leaning over the chair and looking into the viewfinder of the other camera. I focused on the light stand, set my exposure, and used my remote to take the photo.
It's a real ttv - not just a photoshopped border. I get asked that a lot.

I bought myself a black flat sheet a couple of days ago and have been using it for my 365 shots lately. Here are two photos from this week:

No need for fancy lighting, fancy backgrounds or anything. Just a cigarette, a lighter, and some smoke.

Nice entries everyone! I'm submitting this as my photo for the theme. Nothing special here... just window light from the right and a solid color wall.

I think it's great that you guys are taking our cue to talk about your set up. I think everyone learns something that way.

I've got lots of solid colour backgrounds in my 365/366 set. But from this week, I've got only this from today:

More solid colour backgrounds (not from this week):

Seems a whole lot of us chose black. Actually, though, my background itself was burgundy - the only light in the photo was from the glow sticks leaving everything else black. This was just a random playing around photo for the most part, but I enjoyed how it turned out!

this is my first podcast challenge! i wanted to use black, but chose white to try something new [plus, black always eats my hair]. white wall. all natural, mid-day light. i should've set it up higher, but, i'm super happy with the outcome anyway :]

Does a single color foreground count in this case?? No elaborate set up or editing - I just set the camera's exposure based on my eyes, then stepped behind white(ish) curtains with the light shining through them to basically overexpose the rest of the shot. The only editing was a crop to remove distracting shadows made by my body on the left side of the image. (What can I say, I'm low tech!)

I must have tried on 25 yellow shirts at the store today. I think the collection I got is well worth it though. Some I'll need to retake before posting.

I don't have the right kind of lights to light my wall evenly, so I thought I'd try something a little different.

I did all kinds of solid color background photos this week. Go me!
Here's another ttv shot that follows pretty much the same procedure as I outline in my earlier post. This time, however, the light is from the bedroom window, and I'm laying in bed. The background is just the green bedroom wall. I thought I should try and get some color in here, since our only studio backdrops are black, white, and then a mottled grey that is totally not solid.
"i hang your picture right above my mind." by jessi. [?]

Then I did this one. This is against the white backdrop, which ended up looking grey since my lighting was really only on me. I didn't use the flashes, because I wanted to get a shallower depth of field, so I just shot this with the studio lights on high. I used my manual focus 50mm and shot a whole crap-ton of photos at arm's length to get what I wanted, because that's just what you have to do.
"let me hold your syrup close to mine." by jessi. [?]

And then, I did this lovely set. These are also on the white background. It's very difficult for me to blow out the background without losing my skin tone, since I'm so incredibly pale. These ones were shot with my kit lens with a +2 magnification filter. My black and white conversion is pretty basic, but I like to add a bit of yellow to warm it up a bit.
"like a storm that blows a small town down..." by jessi. [?]

And finally, this is today's shot, on black. The black background is definitely the easiest to use. This was also shot with my kit lens, with the +2 filter. These last two photos used the studio lights with flash. I sort of love the studio lights.

I was such a good participator this week. It's probably because I'm really sick of being in second place all the time. :P
