Mormegil yes sir.
feelinMN yes, May 3 is after Aprl 25. i just mentioned the April 25 because that's the end of the auction for the ferris wheel on ebay. May 3 is the Saturday that my friends and I will go to Santa Monica Pier to take photos before they start taking it apart.

I was there a few weeks ago and was asked by security to leave the amusement area because a) I didn't have a permit (issued by the amusement park) for photography and b) I was photographing the ride vs. my kids on the ride.
The guard was friendly enough as he explained his employers position that the amusement area and everything in it are private property and they retain the rights to all photos/videos, but he was also not going to cut me any slack. I was allowed to shoot from the pier itself, as long as I was outside the thick blue line on the ground that apparently denotes the boundary of their domain :)
Just an FYI.

mike... i have been warned by the security guy too... but i think the photos that megz had in mind were something like this:

so he'd be on the beach, rather than inside the amusement park. the ferris wheel is big enough that i think you can get different shots of it from various parts of the pier without actually being inside the pier.
megz... iron man at 3rd street? are the theaters there decent? plus a movie that huge on the first weekend... i would imagine the lines would be pretty crazy. i'm in though...

I have taken pictures in the park, and a security guard simply asked me to sign a waiver saying I wasn't going to try and sell the pictures for monetary gain. It was really simple, and then no one else bothered me.
what I want to know is, who buys a ferris wheel in parts? especially off ebay?

The cool thing about the auction is that 50% of the winning bid is a donation to Special Olympics Southern California (where I work). Currently, there is one bid for $50,000 which means we're already recipients of a $25,000 donation.
I can't make it on 5/3, but am interested in seeing everyone's pictures.

mikekrueger: thanks for the heads up! we'LL definiteLy keep our eye open for the security guards when shooting cLose. and yes, i'd like to do sunset shots by the beach, maybe getting a siLhouette of the wheel and the pier.
Joits: yes, i've experienced watching there and it's pretty nice. they actuaLLy have two theatres which i'm sure wiLL definiteLy be packed just for Iron Man. it's gonna be one heck of a crazy night. thanks for confirming.
citizen for boysenberry jam: so that was it?! just Sign Then Drive? i mean, sign then shoot? (sorry, the VW commerciaL just popped in my head) hehehe. good question too!

Darren Oerly: i hope that we won't get rain that day, i want the sunset! cooL! let us know if you'LL be abLe to make it.

Yeah, I was harassed by the guards there too. I mean they weren't mean or threatening or anything but pretty insistent that I not take pictures without signing something that said the pictures would not be used commercially.
If we're doing off-site photos I'll come join you guys too.

megzzzzz: Yeah, once you sign I think it's all good to shoot. What they told me was basically they didn't want people taking photos and then making money off of them. The text of the thing you want to sign is like one paragraph that says just that. That you will not use any photos you take while on the premises for commercial purposes. Also I think they only harass D/SLR people or people who have expensive looking equipment. If you go there with a P&S I think you'll get left alone.
And here's my take on the wheel :)

Ron Hard C [deleted] says:
Anybody remember Pacific Ocean Park? I think it was around the same area. A friend and I snuck in there in 1970 and it was boarded up and all the rides looked like a ghost town. It would have made for some fantastic pics, but neither of us were carrying our cameras. The guard caught us and I just wanted to run, which we could have done. But my friend, with a big sheepish grin, walked towards the guard and said something like "You caught us." The guard took our i.d. and wrote down our names and told us that we would be in serious trouble if we ever returned. Damn. I would have LOVED to have come back a few days later and taken some pictures of that bizarre ghost town of carnival rides next to the ocean. One of my biggest missed opportunities!

Anyone know why they are selling it? Are they replacing it with something else - bigger? better?
BTW, I don't think there is any historic significance to the one there now. think it is vintage the latest restoration of the pier in the 90's.

kangster: i'll be more than willing to sign that agreement. heck, with my D40, they call this a professional camera? lol. anyways, we're planning to do on and off site shots, thinking about going down to the beachside, getting the ocean and also the pier first. then, walk in the pier, snapping as we go.
marctonysmith: we'll be so glad if you could also join us.
Ron Hard C: wow, what a story! well, you better get back and get some shots again, before they take the wheel down.
unmirasol: yeah, i'll be sad too. but unfortunately, its time for retirement. you're very welcome, and it would be so nice for you to join us as well.
kones: wow! i can tell that you're very lucky! first, you never got hassled by security, and second for having this sharp and wonderful long exposure shot, camera handheld like you said... for that long!?!
FANTASTIC!!!
Introducing Nancy: well, according to what i've heard on the news, they're planning to make way for a new one. they've also said that the Pacific Park Ferris Wheel has been there for 12 years, and has been featured on many movies already. and according to [fishlamp], 50% of the final bid will go to the the Special Olympics.

Here's one I took about a month and half ago -- just outside the park on the pier. Didn't get hassled once by rent-a-cops, which was unbelievable.

I just read that the winning bid was $132,400 and came from the son of a former Oklahoma City mayor who will move it to the Sooner State. He also paid $135,000 for the base, and the shipping weight is 122,000 pounds.

At least it's going to be replaced with a more energy-efficient ferris wheel. I'm sure the two weeks a wheel is not there... will be interesting. I hope I get a chance to visit and take pictures while the wheel is missing.

Honestly, I'm not sure why they need a more energy efficient Ferris wheel. It's already the world's only solar powered one.
Anyway, here's a useful hint. I typically park at the Santa Monica place Mall. Depending on the time, it's either free or around $5. When it's free, there may be a 3 hour time limit, but there isn't a ticket/gate system or anything.

Just in case there isn't room for everyone at the pier entrance (the sidewalk path down to the pier is nearly single file and it can get pretty crowded) with all the traffic, what if we meet in the area just north of the entrance. If I remember correctly there's a grassy area there.
Either way, I'm sure we'll be able to spot everyone from wherever--we tend to stick out I think. :)

There's plenty of paid parking (I wouldn't attempt street parking because the parking police are pretty quick in SM). The cheapest parking is city parking. There's a good city parking lot that's never full (9 floors) on 2nd street between wilshire and arizona. It's free for the first 2 hours (if you get there before 6PM. and $1/half-hour afterwrds up to $7 max. If you park after 6PM it's $3 flat-fee. One trick is to come back before the two hours are up and move parking structures.
There's parking at the pier too, I have no idea how much it is though.

my apologies also for the very early departure from Yankee Doodle. We wanted to be on the safe side on getting in line for the 11pm showing of Iron Man (which was a great kick-ass movie by the way! i'd recommend anyone who hasn't watched it yet to stay 'til the very end of the credits... there's something interesting you'd like to know...), and drinks weren't even being served by 1015. plus, the guy sitting behind me was an ass.

i will. its just that my main priority right now is this sensor dust in my camera. argh,,, yes it's still a problem.
ok, so i went to this camera store during my 1 hour break earlier at work, hoping that they could fix the problem. they said it will be done by the end of the day. i began to have hope... again.
when i got off work, i immediately went there, and the first thing they said was, "ok, on this one, i won't charge you. come take a look at this." at first i thought, oh sweet, i get this free of charge!
he showed me this image, "this is your sensor enlarged. we've tried blowing it out with a higher pressure and apparently, this dust, if ever this IS dust, won't come off. and most especially, we don't touch the sensor. you might want to bring this to Nikon, they are just in El Segundo..."
seriously, i wanted to cry right there. i'm going to Nikon... AGAIN!?!?!
i told them, that since thursday, ive been using the rocket blower thingy and there was still dust on the sensor. and this is seriously a problem, of all the times, why now! especially when something big is coming up next week, and i can't afford to NOT have this camera working!
so yeah, i need to bring this to Nikon tomorrow (opens at 7am) and be at work by 8am. this is beginning to seriously aggravate me...

now is this a good enough reason for being late on posting? :P
seriously, somebody shoot me right now.

thanks guys. i've brought it to Nikon this morning and they said it can be done within 24 hours. here i go again, hoping for the best.
Mormegil: maybe i should buy my own kit in the future. but then again, im no expert in doing this kind of thing. so to be on the safe side, i'll just leave it to the professionals to do their thing. :D
blackstock: yup, thats what the experts said at the camera store that i went to yesterday. which made me wonder... how the heck did that get there? i mean, if it's dust, it's normal and will easily fall off with just that blower. but for it to be stuck like that? that's obviously more than dust.

Dust can actually be sticky/oily. In that case, a blower bulb might not get it off, especially if it's been on for a while. Are you using a big blower bulb, like a Rocket Air? Those small ones that come in kits really don't cut it.
And about not being an expert... Nobody is when they first do it. I didn't get any training, just followed the instructions. It's pretty straight forward, once you do it a couple of times. And much more practical than sending it in to servicing every few months.

megzzzz Did this develop at the pier meet? If you changed lenses while on the beach you may very well have gotten some ocean spray in there, which would effectively glue sand or dust in place and can't be cleaned with air alone.

airencracken: thanks for the advice.
Mormegil: yes, i borrowed Jon's Rocket looking blower thingy. i guess i needed a far more bigger one then. so it was that easy huh. ok, maybe i'll give this Copperhill Method a try.
blackstock: no, i started to notice black spots just last thursday when i was shooting long exposure in front of this fountain near where i live. yes, i did change lenses at the beachside then. uh-oh, was that a no-no? :(
unmirasol: it's a disease!!! and it's killing me! huhuhu.

megzzzz, its actually not that bad, i have that copperhill kit and like mentioned above, if you follow the directions, you'll be ok.
when you do "touch" the sensor, you still really aren't "touching" the sensor directly, it has a protective cover on it which is what the dust sticks to. its been a while but i would say that eventually, you'll need to take off your own dust or get used to sending in for repair.
