Hi Nita! Note that her jest is not as farfetched as it seems. KSCI (among others) is sponsoring a Lunar New Year Parade/Festival (Chinese theme? Generic asian? Disneyfied?) in Pasadena on Feb. 18th. For those who can wait the City of Alhambra should have something a little more authentic on Feb. 24th.
See you there!

Hi Joe! That's a great idea. Much better than the monthly camera swap meet at Carson, aka Bagnall's Camera Expo. It's January 27th and features a talk by Michael Stone who I've never heard of either. Questonable tips on the swap meet are here.

how about meet at a central point, and go on a photo scavenger hunt? People who can afford it should donate 10 bucks for a raffle or a prize or whatever. For the hunt, everything is to be within walking distance so that there is no confusion when it comes to driving. We start at a certain reasonable time, check in for lunch and have a group lunch, get to know one another, finish the photo missions, and meet back. We can split off into teams of 4, and the winning team gets the grand prize of 50% of the collected total. 1st runner up gets 30%. Third placing team gets 20%. Winners will be determined by the rest of the group on Flickr, as they vote for their favorite combined set.
For the hunt, the mission is to take pictures with or in front of whatever the item on the list is. From the team of 4, have one rotating member be the photographer for each item. So there will always be 3 people in the picture, while one rotating team member shoots.
Bleh, something along those lines, no? The only stipulation is that your team members have to be people you haven't met... Is that too detailed or set up for failure?
We might even be able to get Samy's to sponsor the event if there's big enough response from this meet...
Anywho, just a shot in the dark here.

well, it sounds like a great idea. There's only one problem though... Of the people that usually show up, we pretty much all know each other. On the other hand. If this had a month or two lead in and we made it more inclusive of just flickr... maybe get some local photo clubs in on it as well... the idea does have potential

Alright, seemingly the zoo will be the best bet.
SD or LA. Fight about it for a couple days then I'll make another arbitrary decision :P
as for little tokyo to the beach, yellow-handle... spino is right. No one in their right mind is going to take a 15 or so mile walk/ride only to do it again to get back.
But that earns you the honour of planning two meets next month. One in little tokyo, one at the beach (I'm guessing you mean santa monica)

Chinatown would be good. From Chinatown you can take the Goldline to Union Station and Olvera Street. Little Tokyo i s not to far from there. Universal City Walk is a subway ride away. Three bucks will cover all your public transportation for the whole day.
Here is a link to the Goldline.

I'm up for Chinatown... never been and have been meaning to go. We have to choose a very obvious meeting point though or we'll be playing cell phone tag all day (not unlike another, not unpleasant, but slightly chaotic, flickrmeet :))
And I'd LOVE to go to the Getty Villa some time but coordinating passes for lots of people individually might be confusing--is there any way to get a 'group pass' for a possibly unspecified number of guests or anything like that? might be easier...

there's some interesting markets in chinatown that sell stuff that "most people" wouldn't dare want to eat. i know sara was able to take her point-&-shoot into one to take pictures of the frogs and eels and turtles and whatnot, but i doubt they'd be pleased to have a dozen people with cameras clicking away as they try and sell someone dinner.
but just so you know... they sell unusual stuff to eat.

I would suggest dim sum in china town, but the wait on a table is looooong for a large group(the wait on any weekend morning is looooong for anyone, actually). I don't have to go on a photo excursion to have a good time with flickr-ers...just sitting around talking photos is always fun enough. The cameras usually just make their ways out of the bags at some point during the meet.

One thing I've seen other groups do is bring something to talk about like a 4x6 print. It lets others see your work and gives you an excuse for conversation if you're shy like I am.
I know I've mentioned this before and the last time we tried this I was the only one to bring something but I really, truly think it can work this time, if only because everyone who made fun of my pic has gone pro and no longer has the time to flickr.

Hi. I'm Charles. I'm new to this. I like the Chinatown-Olvera St-Union Station idea. LA/SD Zoo--not so much. Apart from the first meeting, anyone want Canter's or Jan's or Susina or Sake House Miro for a quick bite/meet? Sake House has a back patio that can accomodate around 20 people; I don't know how many show up to these meetings. Susina is small, and I assume y'all know about Canter's & Jan's.

Chinatown on 28th !!
How about meeting at the Union Station and move to Olvera street from there and walk upto Chinatown ..Union station has ample place for a gathering to start and waiting there for a while wud nt be too monotonous ...Olvera street is a 2 min walk from there ..And there are a few nice things like Avilla Adobe house (correct me if am wrong) which is the oldest house in LA...(open to visitors till 4PM) from there we can walk upto Chinatown which is like a 10-12 minute walk from Olvera Street.

bringing prints? i don't think i've really printed out any of the pictures i've taken that don't include family members... it would be a tough decision to choose something to print.

Date: Jan. 28th
Place: Union Station (is that the final answer? and where in Union Station? may i suggest the front doors?)
Time: Undecided as of yet, but probably around 11:00AM.
It seems as though about half want it before lunch, and half after. perhaps we can compromise and meet the after-lunch crowd somewhere else on the route? i know that means that some people would be missing out on a few things, but... i dunno. just making suggestions.

Just bring a print, or several copies of the same print. and we can figure a way to show them so everyone can see them. Either we can put them all in a book(multi-paged portfolio thingy) and everyone can pass it around and look at all of the images or we can just set them up at the restaurant or something and have our own little gallery where we are hanging out. No need for competition.
If you bring extra copies of your print...you can feel free to swap with others for their prints or something. Just a thought.
