The future of the National Fruit Collections at Brogdale Fruitscape 0 61 months ago

About Brogdale - Home of the National Fruit Collections

Located in the "Garden of England", Brogdale Farm in Faversham, Kent is home to the National Fruit Collections, the trees being owned by DEFRA and managed by the Brogdale Horticultural Trust.
The collections consist of 2090 Apples cultivars, 522 Pear cultivars, 326 Plum cultivars, 283 Cherry cultivars, 20 cultivars of Quince, 4 cultivars of Medlar, 48 Hazelnut cultivars, 209 cultivars of Currants, 152 Gooseberry cultivars, 50 Vine cultivars and 11 Apricot cultivars.
The site was established in the 1950's as a resource for plant breeders, growers and amateurs. Most cultivars can be purchased as cuttings and grow them yourself or purchased as a plant.
Unfortunately, the future of the collections is under threat as the Government has made the decision a year ago, that the collections will be moved, according to Lord Rooker, the Minister responsible for Horticulture announced on Radio 4's The Food Programme on the 20th May, 2007.
As a reminder of what the collections are like, here are a few pictures.
