"Thousands of real-life, sworn law enforcement officers never make it home. They make the ultimate sacrifice. We owe those who have fallen, and all of our nation’s law enforcement officers, a huge debt of gratitude,”
- Clint Eastwood, Honorary Chairman, NLEOMF

"The soldier in battle is often liable to be ambushed, but the police officer throughout his whole career is liable to fall into the ambushes which exist in the dark streets and alleys, the burglared dwelling or shop, in the unprepared encounter with the lunatic, the drunkard, the street rowdy, and the domestic disturber. At all times he literally carries his life in his hands."
Police Commissioner John O’Donovan (New Zealand) at Police Funeral 1919

A Part of America Died
Somebody killed a policeman today,
and part of America died.
A piece of our country he swore to protect,
will be buried with him at his side.
The beat that he walked was a battle field too,
just as if he'd gone off to war.
Though the flag of our nation won't fly at half mast,
to his name they will add a gold star.
The suspect that shot him will stand up in court,
with counsel demanding his rights.
While a young widowed mother must work for her kids,
and spend many long, lonely nights.
Yes, somebody killed a policeman today,
Maybe in your town or mine.
While we slept in comfort behind our locked doors,
a cop put his life on the line.
Now his ghost walks a beat on a dark city street,
and he stands at each new rookie's side.
He answered the call, of himself gave his all,
And A Part of America Died.
