I don't think any good 'shroomer' will actually tell you a specific location to find them. However in general around trees and in forests are good places to start.
The best time to find them depends on the weather. Morels need a certain level of moisture and temp to pop up.
Try this site for some more info.

BTW they also have a Benzie county shroom forum there too.

no silly, you are thinking of downed elm trees, that's where the big white ones grow.

Are there morel look-alikes that are poisonous?

There is what is called the false morel.. The cap doesn't attach at the stem like a true morel.. Some say they make you sick when you eat 'em.. I wouldn't know about that.. I have discovered I'm sensitive to the white morels but can eat the black ones.. Figures... We have a bumper crop of giant whites that pop in our front yard every year! My husband says, yum! more for him!

I've eaten the cap morels before. One or two mixed in a batch won't kill ya and unless you are ultra sensitive to shrooms they won't make you sick.
Wouldn't eat a whole batch of caps though.
We picked the biggest I've ever seen on N. Manitou Island. Growing in the dune grass right out of the sand. Couldn't eat them, every nook and cranny was packed with sand. Those were white ones.
I think you might find them right out your back door, in the hardwoods, around the oaks, beech and maples. Mostly it's up to mother nature. Has to be the correct recipe of sun, heat, moisture and soil. And a GOOD EYE!!

Thanks for all your comments! I should have them all around my neck of the woods then. I'll just have to get out there and look once the snow is gone for a bit.

We had quite of few blue racers on our property last year. They may be harmless, but I hate snakes!

They are called Blue Racers for a reason..........they're fast. They won't chase you............pound your walking stick on the ground and act like sasquacth the blue racer will hide from you.

You guys are getting me excited talking about mushrooms. I usually go out a week or 2 after Mother's day. For me, the secret is: go into the woods with your camera, expecting to enjoy the forest, then, if you find any morels, it's a bonus. Some years they can be very hard to find.
My strategy is, take a GPS, then every time you find some mushrooms, enter the way-point. They come back to the same spot every year. After several years of hunting, I just have to take my GPS out and harvest my crop.

i don't have a GPS but there is some truth to that. I go to some of the same spots, every year.
The best is road hunting. The right two track, the right music, you jump out pick a handful every now and then. It's a good time.........:)

Things that may or may not be of interest:
www.michiganmorels.com/morels2.shtml BUT you should always err on the side of caution and hunt with someone who knows their business!
Aspen trees can be good for morels, especially fallen ones. Morels like yards too, and I know a guy who gets bags and bags of morels just walking through the yards of vacation homes. (it's not me - I'm too polite or chicken I guess).
The National Morel Mushroom Festival is held every May in Boyne City, Michigan. It's purportedly a lot of fun!
The same goes for fruit trees, especially old apple trees. this apple tree was like a white morel factory. Seriously, it was like fish in a barrel, only with morels.
A magazine I used to edit called the Northern Michigan Journal ran The BioRegional Kitchen: We're Talking Morels! by Steven Schwartz.
Morels are known as Morchella. Sounds like a wine to me.
Absolute Michigan keyword morel has some nice stuff including On the Trail of the Michigan Morel (with a tasty morel/pasta/Leelanau cheese recipe).
I'm linking to this thread from Hunting Morel Mushrooms in Northern Michigan on betsiebay.net.
I would absolutely LOVE to do a Benzie County Flickr Morel Hike this May!!! Anybody up for it?

GPS don't help none.
Year before last I found a neat hill with 13 nice Large shrooms on it. Marked a weigh point. Last year darn near get lost trying to find weigh point (trees blocking satelite reception) and when I finally get to the spot I find a measly 3 small half bug eaten shrooms!!!! GRRRRRR
I seem to do better switching up spots from year to year. Same spot never seems to yield me much for shrooms from the previous year.

I have a good two track for road hunting. find a bundle every year. not that i don't enjoy long walks in the woods, but with a full work schedule don't usually find time. if i get enough for one batch, sauted, with a steak i'm happy.

Season
usually late april to begin through early part of june, weather dependant ofcourse.
equipment, walking stick and a string bag, put your mushrooms in the bag and kind of shake it on the way out of the woods, loose spores will disengage from the heads, and there will be more mushrooms next season, or even 2 weeks later.
my bother in law took his spots to the grave, I know of one spot but I aint telling!!!

It may not apply to Morels, but if you want to make Beef Burgundy the "secret recipe" for sauteeing the mushrooms is: 1 tablespoon butter, 1 tablespoon extra-virgin olive oil, and 1/4-teaspoon garlic.
This is the kind of Beef Burgundy that's best served over hot, baked potatos that are split open, with lots of French sour-dough bread on the side.
