I've done it, with no problems at all (using the UnDutchables vertsion, can't remember version # sorry, think it was their second)
I did it because of:
3200ISO, Mirror Lockup and RAW in all modes.
Hardly use the 3200ISO but do use the other feaures regularly.
It's DEFINITELY worth doing...

I bought my 300D with the hack already installed and it seems to make the battery indicator show wrong values, does anyone of you guys have the same problems? The only feature i use is mirror lockup.. so im thinking about reinstalling the orginal firmware to see if that fixes it.

The hack seems to cause the battery indicator to read 1/2 empty earlier than before, but other things I read seem to inidicate that might be normal anyway for the 300D. It seems to read 1/2 empty when perhaps 1/3 of the possible shots have been taken.

Ok, I just did the hack (I was scared I would brick my camera while doing it). Now does anyone know how to do some Degraining in Photoshop or a free program that does a good job (for Macs)? Since the major reason I wanted it was for the ISO 3200 (I'll learn how to use the other stuff later).

sparquay: I use Noise Ninja, which comes as a standalone application and plug-in for Photoshop/Photoshop Elements, Win/Mac. There are a few other similar applications out there, but I liked Noise Ninja best of all that I tried. There's a free demo version of the plugin.

Can someone tell me what mirror lockup is?

Fearby Mirror Lock-up (often referred to just as MLU) is a feature of the higher end camera to reduce camera vibration on long exposure shots.
Essentially the mirror flips up, then the camera waits a predefined time before it opens the shutter. It may also do the reverse at the other end, I'm not sure about that bit.
The argument is that the movement of the mirror actually causes camera shake, that might then be recorded by the photo.
With the 300D and other small sensor cameras the mirror is actually smaller than the 35 mm brothers, but I use it and it does seem to help.
Used particularly for long night exposures at the the like

Considering all the benefits out of this hack, I would like to know where is this file available for download. If it breaks, where can I find the earlier version of firmware to fix up things.
One curiousity - Why is this a hack? Is it like a pirated software? Is this also available with a price from Canon?

Hi Ashish T,
The firmware was first released by Russian hackers -- thus it's not supported by Canon and if installed it might void your camera's warranty. That said, few users ever experience problems with the the firmware, and if problems do arise it can always be rolled back to the official canon firmware.
The firmware hack comes in two flavours. First, there is the original Russian version (Wasia). Development for this firmware stopped in June 2004. Second, there is the Duch version (UnDutchables), which took the Wasia code and and made some of its features available in basic shooting modes (there are no new features in this firmware).
There's a lot of information out there if you google for it.
(side note: ISO3200 sounded particularly tempting for me too, but the images it produces are so noisy as to be unusable.)

Vermin, ISO 3200 is VERY usable - While the shots look lousy in colour, I recommend it for grainy, monochrome images. It turns the 300D into a terrific night-time camera, especially when coupled with an f/1.8 50mm lens :)
Either that or Noise Ninja (or the like) will take out the worst of the noise. I've used it in Lincoln Cathedral before to good effect.
Here's a supermacro taken at ISO 3200 (full frame, no crop):

And a very lazy low-light shot:

I have been using the Wasia Hack for about 2 years now without any issues at all. Mind you 3200iso is not a speed I find myself using much but the camera functions great so I've never found the need to replace the firmware with the original.

it's nice to have FEC (flash exposure compensation) also, since i might be getting the canon 420ex flash which doesn't have that built-in
if you can't tell, i have the hack ;)

i installed the hack firmware soon after i got my Digital Rebel. no problem whatsoever. i no longer have the camera (upgraded to 30D and gave the dRebel to my sis), but all of the features were important to me:
1. single shot focus (most important to me)
2. flash exposure compensation
3. mirror lock-up
4. iso 3200
here is a shot at iso 3200:

I have just downloaded the hack, although i did have to download it again as the first download done nothing different (mine is version 1.1.1 anyway).
Having now the wasia version installed i must say programming my buttons is great!

Hi, I'm a newbie to the group but have been using the 300d for around 3years. I hacked my camera with the Russian upgrade after the warranty expired and other than the battery indicator, as mentioned by others, I've had no problems. The MLU has come in useful though ;-)
I would like to add that I saved the original firmware to the compact flash prior to upgrading in case there were any probs :-)

i would LOVE to have that 3200 ISO speed. I bought my Digi Rebel from a friend and she bought it not long after it came out, so it's about 4 years old.
I guess i'll google the hack, but can someone tell me how to do it if I cant find the instructions on google?

In five years I haven't been tempted. I still shoot at ISO 6400 by underexposing two stops on ISO 1600 and correcting in the RAW processing software and then using some freebie noise reduction software.

The hack is a god send ... my daughter bought a newer canon but I'm sticking with the hacked rebel... Mirror lock-up - Raw in all modes sweet.
I did it before warranty ran out / u can re flash with canon software at any time. So why not use it.
Its a real upgrade
