About 2010 NHL Photo Contest
THIS CONTEST IS CLOSED. NO NEW ENTRIES, PLEASE. CHECK BACK FOR NEXT YEAR'S NHL PHOTO CONTEST.
Only photos of designated NATIONAL HISTORIC LANDMARKS are eligible for this contest. Any others will not appear in the pool.
In 2010, we celebrate the eleventh anniversary of the National Historic Landmark Photo Contest. The past decade has brought us over 1,000 incredible images from almost every state in the union. These images were submitted by people from all walks of life who care for and cherish these special places that represent our American story. Many images were submitted by owners or caretakers. Many others were submitted by visitors, both from the United States and abroad. We originally titled the contest, “Imaging Our National Heritage” to encourage people to use their cameras to capture the meaning of their National Historic Landmark in a photo. We hope these images inspire you to visit our nation’s National Historic Landmarks, seek out the stories that have formed our American history, and create your own image.
On this, our 11th anniversary, we hope to welcome hundreds of outstanding images, many picturing landmarks that have not previously been part of the contest. National Park Service employees nationwide will vote to select the winning images

FAQs
What is an NHL?
National Historic Landmarks are nationally significant historic places designated by the Secretary of the Interior because they possess exceptional value or quality in illustrating or interpreting the heritage of the United States. Today, fewer than 2,500 historic places bear this national distinction. (Listing in the National register of Historic Places does not mean that a property has been designated a National Historic Landmark. If you are unsure of a property, please check the database. tps.cr.nps.gov/nhl/ ) Be certain to tag your photo: 2010NHLPHOTOCONTEST
What is the purpose of the 2010 NHL Photo Contest?
Hosted by the National Park Service (NPS), this contest celebrates our nation's National Historic Landmarks. NHLs are nationally significant historic places designated by the Secretary of the Interior because they possess exceptional value or quality in illustrating or interpreting the heritage of the United States. Today, fewer than 2,500 historic places bear this national distinction. Search the NHL database to find a landmark near you. The contest will be open to entries from Monday, July 19 through Friday, September 10, 2010. The NPS will then select the winning photographs in the 2010 NHL Photo Contest. To make this a fair and fun competition, participants may enter 1 (ONE) image per NHL and up to 10 (TEN) images total. Our goal is to educate the public on the great diversity of our national heritage through photos of National Historic Landmarks from across the country.
How will the winners be chosen?
The winners will be chosen by the employees of the National Park Service (NPS) and will be announced on the NHL Photo Contest Flickr Group page and on the NHL Photo Contest webpage. The National Park Service retains the sole discretion over the selection of, and decision not to select, any particular entry as a winner.
What if my photo is selected?
You will be contacted by September 27 by the National Park Service through your Flickr account. You will be required to respond to the National Park Service via email within 7 days or an alternate winner will be selected.
The National Park Service will send you an official entry form to be signed by you. You must mail or fax the signed entry form to the National Park Service within 7 days or an alternate winner will be selected.
The National Park Service may require a higher quality resolution of the winning photograph. If one of suitable resolution for print is not available, an alternate winner may be selected.
If a prize is awarded to the winner, all taxes, fees, and surcharges on any prizes are the sole responsibility of the prizewinner.
