Thanks Jissy and La Maquisade.
Barry: Freddie was the family pet when we moved to Greece. We named the bar after him because we couldn't agree on a name, his was a simple one-word name, understandable in Greek or English, and we knew that British people (the majority of our customers) are crazy about animals and would react well to a bar named after a dog, which they did. Freddie became a much loved presence in the bar until he passed away in June this year. He has his own set in my stream.

Simon, he was a Cape Town mongrel, with perhaps Maltese Poodle and Cocker Spaniel aspects to him, but a lot of people thought he looked like a West Highland Terrier. We got him from an animal shelter in Cape Town when our previous dog passed away.

OXI Day

October 28 is OXI Day in Greece, commemorating the refusal of the Greek nation to submit to Mussolini's ultimatum to surrender in October 1940, after which the Greeks defeated the Italian Army in the mountains of Greek Epirus and Albania, forcing Hitler to invade Greece.
The day is commemorated with parades in every town, but the main parade takes place in the city of Thessaloniki, and is broadcast on national TV.

Green, Green

Well, Freddie's Beach Bar is closed as far as the 2007 summer season is concerned. We served our final breakfasts and drinks this morning, before the last of our regular recent customers left to catch their flights home. I took the last tax invoices and till slips in to our accountant, and we started the process of unpacking refrigerators and cleaning up. The incessant roar of electric motors has been silenced, and the bar sits like some sleeping giant with the shutters closed. Cleaning and packing stuff away will take a few more days, and then there is lots to be done in the garden. If the weather's good, a few outings in Zakynthos, before heading back to our apartment in Athens about mid-November. I may well have to do more than one trip, we have so much stuff to move back and forth, we shall see, and that will give me (and you) the opportunity to see a bit more of Greece.
Here is a lovely green close-up of the clover which has sprouted out of the previously dry, sun-baked soil all over our property, all over Zakynthos in fact, and will cover the ground until Spring, when wild flowers will bloom among them.

Drunk Irishman? Surely not, Pablo, hehe. Yeah, not too many 4-leaf clovers there, although I didn't look too carefully.
You'll have to watch this photo diary to see what I shall be doing, Erica ;-) We have an apartment there, in a nice neighbourhood, and the winters here are a little too severe in our leaky, open-to-the-wind beach cottage, although I will be coming back here once or twice to attend to various things.
But, off the top of my head, I will be reading a lot of books, going to a lot of movies, live music shows, museums and art shows; in the last six months, there has been no time for those things. I shall enjoy sitting at coffee shops in the plateia, knowing that someone else has made the cappuccino. Getting together with friends.
Travel a bit. Take my daily diary photograph. Finally get around to scanning in more of my old slides. Organize our daughter's wedding in Cape Town in February 2008. Travel to London to spend Christmas and New Year with our two daughters, their partners and other family. Travel to South Africa in mid-Jan for six weeks for abovementioned wedding, vacation and seeing family and friends.
Just for starters. Back to Zakynthos in late March to get ready for the new season.

Thank you! Thanks for your wishes. It is indeed a relief to pack everything away and contemplate a few months of doing normal things. The packing and cleaning is almost done, the bar is empty; just a few tasks remain.
We start off the season with such energy and enthusiasm in the beautiful Spring, and even though most of our guests are friends, having been here several times before, and even the ones we don't know are very nice people, relaxed and on holiday, the sheer volume and repetitiveness wears one down, and the last six weeks are an eternity. It is the same for many people in the village, you can see the exhaustion and boredom in their faces, and many establishments closed long before we did.
The village, which was a bustling, noisy, touristic place just a week ago, is now closed and shuttered, one drives through it in the evening and you don't see a soul, all the bright lights and advertising signs switched off and swathed in plastic bags against the winter weather. The beach is deserted and silent, all one hears are the birds and the sea.

Everything Turned Pink

After a day spent cleaning, packing and moving furniture around, I was sitting outside our house catching up with Flickr, when I looked up, and the whole world had turned pink. It had been a very overcast day, and the setting sun had turned the sky, sea and beach a bright salmon pink. So this had to be the pic of the day. See more in the outtakes.

Brave Little Wave

I did a few errands in Zakynthos Town today, a quiet lunch at a harbourside taverna, and on the way back, stoppped off at the seashore at Krioneri to take a few photos for the diary, something different for a change. Out of the eight candidates (see the others below), I chose this eager, bright, clean young wave thrusting himself bravely over the rocks. Such energy, such promise!

What an interesting way of putting it, Tim! Yes it is a little bit like that, bathing, cleaning, tidying, tucking up, and then rushing out to a nightclub without a shred of guilt. Maybe that's were the analogy breaks down.
I don't see it as sad and violent here, rather cheerful and playful. Certainly it can be violent at times, but even then, I don't find it sad. Awesome, powerful, yes.

Evening Limanaki View

It rained hard all day today. Once again, we had business in the town, and we went by car, rather than the Piaggio, and didn't take a camera. So, when it came to evening, and still no daily picture, I strolled down to the beach, where the light was again impressive, and different to other evenings. It was raining softly when i took all these pictures, but I was pleased with the light and clarity in this different view of the familiar scene of the limanaki.

Getting Some Sun

It was a bright sunny day today, although with a very chilly northerly wind blowing bearing the chill from the snow in the Balkans. I took the opportunity to spread our beach umbrellas in the sunshine to dry out and to make a start on washing the sunbeds with the high-pressure hose. I hope it's sunny tomorrow, so I can finish the job.

It rained most of the day, and we had a lazy time, lying in and reading in the morning, tidying up in the house later. I took a few photos in and around the house during a break in the rain, to have something to post here. Here's a topical leaf, found lying on our back porch.

On the Beach

Took a walk on the beach around sunset, and this abandoned bit of plastic walkway seems to sum up the end of summer feeling, making a colourful curve on the sand. The beach is empty, just a few people walking their dogs, and the village is like a ghost town, not a light or a soul, a car, or any other sign of life. The weather is pretty miserable, also.

Smart Parking

Yes indeed, Jissy, we are kicking back and relaxing, being really slothful, although there are a list of things that I have to do before the weather gets really bad, and Ritsa is really anxious to get back to Athens. But it is nice not to be bound by routine.
We have been into the town every day this week, to do various things.
On yesterday's visit my way was blocked by this smart car parked neatly on the pavement (sidewalk), forcing me to back up several metres, and step into the roadway and risk the oncoming traffic in order to get where I was going.
Zakynthos is a small town, with narrow, one-way streets, designed for pedestrian and donkey traffic, but nowadays there are so many cars on the island that there are horrendous traffic and parking problems, exacerbated by the Greek anarchic spirit. So I guess it is useful to have one of these small vehicles, designed for easy parking, and just slip it into whatever space is available, even the sidewalk. They are quite popular here, although there are a greater number of 4WD pickup trucks and SUV's which are a real pain in the arse when they are double-parked in a narrow street.
Oh, and before I go, check out the neat new Apple product which came to me via viral email - I found it quite amusing. Not too sure if our colleague Lee-Anne Heringer has to support it.

That drives up the price to extra-orbital levels for poor SOB's like myself... I live in a place where 4x4 is almost a daily necessity- and totally necessary to do farm work I do when I'm not being an IT guy.

Upside Down Reflection

I spent a long, relaxing afternoon in Zante Town again. Ritsa had a hairdresser appointment and then the dentists, so I strolled around with my camera. I took over 200 shots, trimmed it down to 177, uploaded 49 to Flickr, trimmed that down to 45 finally, covering a few themes. I liked this one, taken on the quayside, with the lamppost, sky and clouds reflected in a puddle of water on the quayside.

Good question, Imperatrix. Trees, shrubs and lawns mainly. There is a well-established citrus orchard, planted by Ritsa's father. Apart from that, the property was all sand when we came here in 2001 and started to build the bar; prior to that it was a holiday cottage, used for a month or two in the summer. We have a lot of wild flowers at various times of the year, not as much since we started to cultivate and landscape the property, but still a joy to see. We did grow vegetables in our first few summers while the bar was being built. Since it has been in operation, we don't have the time to attend to vegetable crops. Even watering becomes a problem in the hot months, hence we are extending the irrigation system at the moment, in between rain showers.
I have two sets on my stream documenting what is in our garden.

Deserted Village

I have referred a couple of times to the fact that our village, busy, vibrant and thronged with tourists in the season is now like a ghost town, and here is the picture to prove it.
This was one of the few times we ventured out of the house on this Saturday. We had the most incredible winds all day, Force 10-11 Beaufort, interspersed with severe rain and thunderstorms. Branches were crashing down all around us, fortunately no damage done, and nothing falling on my head, although one large branch came down right outside our front door, and a fence was blown down.

Burning

After the huge storm of yesterday, we gathered all of the fallen branches and twigs which littered the property, cut up the bigger ones for firewood, and burnt all of the smaller ones. Here the fire is just starting, we fed it for about three hours, at the end of which we had a lovely bed of coals, so I nipped up to the butcher and got a couple of brizoles (pork chops) and village sausage to have a braai (barbecue).

The remains of the Freddie's Bar house wine stock will keep us in everyday drinking wine for the winter. Half-full 20 litre bag in box, containing white, rosé and red respectively, each made from unique wine grape varieties which are grown only on the island of Zakynthos, and nowhere else, with the exception of the Robola, which is found also on Kefalonia.

Well Jissy, there's another fireplace-full of fallen wood ready for the next one - tomorrow, possibly. And yes, our wine is of better quality than the average papsak back home; but it is an effective and economical way of packaging bulk wine. In the season, a box of white wine lasts about 10 days (and a 50 litre barrel of Mythos beer lasts a day or less).

Miniature Olive Tree

A miniature olive tree, with big fat, ripe olives, on a sidewalk in Zakynthos Town, snapped with my cellphone camera. We had to go to the bank to get money to pay for the irrigation project and a few other bills. For a few months we manage to top up our bank account; from now until June, we take money out of the bank, hoping it is going to last until we open again, the cash flow resumes, we get past the hump of stocking up for the beginning of the season, pay off the credit card balances and accumulate a little bit again.
The irrigation project is reaching conclusion, and we are starting a new one, to replace the wooden railings around the bar verandah, which have rotted in the sea air, with traditional brickwork.

Well, Michael, at least come and visit first, and see if it really does suit you.
The bag-in-box packaging method was invented in Australia, and is an economical and effective way of delivering product without the romantic but costly overhead of glass, labels and cork closures. The heavy-duty aluminium foil bags are filled under vacuum, with an effective dispensing valve which prevents oxidation. The filled bags are placed inside a rigid cardboard box for stability. Normally they are backstage, where we fill wineglasses or carafes to order, the white and rosé kept in the refrigerator. And yes, Simon-K, our wine for the winter has already been paid for.

The Church on the Hill

We went to one of the local brickyards, where the traditional clay tiles called touvlettes are made, and while Ritsa was haggling over the price (I leave that sort of thing to her, she is very good at it), I took this picture of the church on the hill, actually part of a monastery, the other buildings are hidden.
We then made several other stops (e.g. the Dimos (municipality) to pay our water account), and along the way, had an interesting Flickr experience. I have put together a 2008 calendar (using fd's Flickrtoys, choosing photos from this photo diary for the corresponding months), which I will give as gifts to family and close friends. I visited a printing shop, the husband of the lady we buy all of our stationery from, and when they copied the pages off my flash memory card to view them and discuss things, the guy and his assistant both exclaimed "Oh, we have seen these pictures before!". In fact they had one or two of them as wallpapers on their computer. They had been searching Flickr for pictures of Zakynthos, found mine, and they have since been following my stream closely, and downloading ones that they like. Incidentally, many of our regular guests also follow my stream to see what's new at Freddie's Bar, who has been visiting etc. Flickr fame!

The reach of flickr is amazing, isn't it?
I really like Greek monasteries. If I were to have a life as a religious person, I would have liked to spend it in Meteora.

Touvlettes

The traditional clay tiles, "touvlettes", which we purchased yesterday, were delivered today, along with the other materials, builder's sand, cement and reinforcing steel, ready for our Albanian stone and brick artist, Andreas and his team to undertake the job of replacing the rotting wooden railings around the bar verandah with traditional brickwork.

My 2008 Calendar

I went into the stationery shop to pick up my calendars, which had been printed by the owner's husband. I had selected one picture from each month of my 2007 Photo Diary and generated the calendar pages using the calendar tool from fd's Fickrtoys. A mosaic for the front page, and Bob's your uncle! Ideal Christmas presents for family and close friends.
The brick railing project is proceeding fast, the irrigation project is complete, and we are busy with a less salubrious project, which is to clear out solid matter from our French drain (cesspit), and repair the sewage pump which we installed at great expense two years ago, to connect with the council's sewage system, and which we suspect has not been working properly ever since. In the meantime, we have been paying exorbitant sums to the Dimos for a non-existent sewage system. I'll spare you pictures of that process.
Nice new icon, La M.
Here's what the new wall looks like.
