Office Space

It was a beautiful, sunny day here in Kentucky. A one day respite from the clouds. The forecast calls for snow this weekend, so we were determined to get out and enjoy the day.

My sister had called last night to invite us to meet her for lunch today, and to ask for our help in finalizing the configuration of her new computer.

So after lunch we headed to her house (just a few blocks from the café where we dined). There wasn't much left to do. The new laptop came loaded with a three month trial of Microsoft Office, a suite of programs which she uses for her business. She could not find the registration key to activate it.

After a bit of searching, it was found and the trial activated. Since she can't do without it, we went ahead and upgraded it to the full Standard Edition.

Once it was all set up, I then exported her contacts from an old computer and imported them into the new setup. I also configured her email so Outlook would poll her mail server.

Before we left, I took this photo. Her workspace is a lot less cluttered than it was before she bought this new computer. Before, she had a monitor, keyboard, mouse and mousepad, and way too many cables connecting everything together. Those cables also snaked down below the desk to the huge tower case that held the CPU and all the drives.

She had been considering an expensive remodeling of the office to make it more efficient, but know she is reconsidering, since the area is much roomier and comfortable to use.

After we left her place, we stopped by home for a bit, then grabbed our cameras and headed out into the surrounding countryside for some sightseeing. I took Alison to see parts of Central Kentucky she had yet to see. We drove down to Boone Creek (named after Daniel Boone who established Fort Boonesborough near it).

I wish we could have gotten some photos while down there, but Grimes Mill Road, across which we drove was very narrow and winding, and there were no places to pull off that weren't private property.

We'll head back out there again soon, and see if there is a different approach we can take to that part of the creek where we can stop for photos.

Time to close. I'm hungry, and we have some Greek food for dinner this evening.

Wow... you bring back memories of my road trip form this summer. Michael took me to Mammoth Caves... WOW!!
But I think my fav place was Louisville (sooo pretty and artsy!) and Woodford Reserve Distillery.... you ever visited? The fields are just gorgeous... and those Derby race horses and breeding farms....

Anything you recognize?? (Unfortunately my camera battery died just as I arrived to the Woodford Reserve grounds! Bummer, it was beautiful there!)

I replied to them via email:

Hi,

I saw the link to your Craigslist rant in my logs. If you have a problem with me, why did you not contact me directly?

A couple of folks visited my blog from the link, but none of them had anything to say. Apparently they are okay with my content.

In Her Icy Grip

This is what I awoke to this morning. This is my new worry. Ice.

The last ice storm we had here was four years ago. It was called a 'storm of the century'. It crippled the city for weeks. The cleanup after the storm took almost a year.

I lived for 4 days without electricity or heat. Many people did not get their electricity restored for up to three weeks.

It was awful. A nightmare.

Our forecast originally called for snow overnight. Snow I can live with. But before going to bed at 1:30 this morning, I looked outside and saw that it was raining. I also noted that the temperature was 30ºF/-1.1ºC.

I turned on the weather radio to hear the new warnings of freezing rain. It's a wonder that I slept at all. But I did.

The forecast claims the rain will end by noon and that the temperature will rise above freezing.

I hope they are right.

Liquid Gold

I took this image late in the afternoon as we waited to hear from a good friend about plans to meet for dinner, I've gotten back into macro work since I built a makeshift light tent from a cardboard box and tissue paper.

The night before I took this, I ordered some new camera equipment, including a new wide-angle lens, a Nikon SB-800 flash, and a more sturdy light tent.

This got me all enthused about my macro work. So I set this up and took this photo.

As for the dinner, Alison and I met our good friend Agnes and a friend of hers for sushi at what is the oldest sushi restaurant here in Lexington, USA. Neither of us had ever eaten there. It was wonderful. The best sushi I have ever had. And it was very inexpensive.

After we dined, Agnes accompanied us to a local pub where we met up with the members of the local chapter of Drinking Liberally for drinks, fellowship, and to watch the President give his State of the Union Address.

After that, we accompanied our friend to another local watering hole that is known for having the largest number of beers in the area. This place has almost 500 different brands of beer. It's an amazing establishment.

We had a blast.

Memento of a Wild Night

This is a memento of our wild adventure on the town last night. Our friend Agnes gave me this off of her keychain after I admired it and said I would love to have one.

Like I said in my previous entry we had a blast. We were sated with great sushi and many adult beverages. It has been a long time since I have drunk that much in one evening, and though it is something I wouldn't want to do very often, I don't regret doing it last night.

Pacing myself through the evening kept me from having a hangover this morning.

We also have a chapter of Drinking Liberally in Ithaca and it happens to be in one of my favorite bars in town. Too bad I didn't make it for the State of the Union address. Actually, I fell asleep after the first 10 minutes of the speech.

I didn't have any bed spins. We got home around 2:30. Ali was in bed asleep before I had my coat off. I was quite wired, despite all the alcohol. So I stayed up to post my entry and read my email. I finally went to bed at 4:30 and woke just before 9.

A couple of mugs of strong Kona and a hot shower, and I was in pretty good shape.

I love your Jan 23rd shot. How do you like the SB 800 flash? I need a flash at some point... I can't stand taking photos with the built-in flash. Ugh.

I'm working my way through a list of about 50 premium bourbons as part of a club at a local pub. Once I get through all of them, my name will be engraved on a plaque on the wall of the pub.

So far, I haven't tasted anything better than Woodford Reserve.

That's okay. I'm sure ow you will be more diligent. ;)

I love this last photo for the photo itself, and because I love a good whiskey/bourbon/scotch. I had never heard of this one before, though, until seeing this shot--and then this morning, while leafing through last month's Wired, lo and behold, a full-page ad for the very stuff.

I think it's a sign.
Maybe I should get some to sit next to my Glendfiddich Solera Reserve...

I think they would look great together. Woodford Reserve is the best sippin' (bourbon) whiskey I have tasted. And the bottle is way cool looking.

The Roller Coaster From Hell

This is the only photo I took today. Actually, I took several of this object, but this was the best shot.

I call it The Roller Coaster From Hell.

Someone very close to me has been on an emotional roller coaster of late. They have a lot of anxiety inducing frustrations in their life.

I'm going along for the ride. I feel every frustration right along with them. Then I have my own batch of frustration. The frustration that comes from wanting to help, to make it all better, but being unable to do anything.

We are both at the mercy of forces outside of our control.

Maybe you can't actually help, but the fact that you're right next to them means a lot and sometimes is as helpful as solving a problem could be.

This thing looks like one of those metallic sponge things to me

I'm hanging on. And that's a copper scourering pad. I saw a 4 pack of them in the bargain bin at the local pharmacy. I paid a dollar for the package.

Thanks!

I know just being there helps, but I can't help but be frustrated. I'm used to accomplishing things. Getting the job done. It's hard when you can't protect the ones you love.

Yes. It is a copper scourering pad. Thanks.

And I forgot to mention that I love the pic from jan 23 too... is that glitter in there, or brown sugar? The grains look so curious!

Faux Roe

My new photography gear arrived this afternoon. In the small box was a Nikon SB-800 Autofocus Speedlight, a Tokina 12-24mm f/4 lens, and a really cool light tent.

The box was waiting on the front porch when we arrived home from a shopping trip. I had the box open and the contents spread across the sofa in seconds.

I put the new lens on the camera and took a bunch of shots with it. Nothing worth posting yet. I think it will be best put to use on landscape shots and shots of tall structures.

But I did put the light tent and the Speedlight to use. I took several macro shots using the flash off the camera, in remote mode, illuminating the subjects of the shots through the fabric of the light tent.

I've put a couple of them on my photostream. The shot above is the best, I think.

Glass pebbles. We stopped by an arts & crafts store in town today. They had them on sale for $1US per bag.

We bought 5 bags of different colors. :)

Whenever I see something in a store that is colorful, shiny, and cheap, I can't resist buying it to use as a photographic subject. I have no idea what I will do with them now that I have photographed them.

There must be some way we can use them decoratively.

Let me know how you like the flash as you get familiar with it!

Re: Jan. 25th... I know how difficult that is and it can be so draining. Sometimes all you can do is let the person know you're there for them. The hard part is realizing that it's only that individual that can really make a change in their life. I used to think that if I said the perfect thing I could help that person realize so-and-so. But that's not always the case - they have to be willing to accept help and that can be an amazingly frustrating thing to witness. Especially with someone you love.

Anyway, hard to articulate these things without being cliche. But I understand your copper scrubbie!

Actually, she doesn't need to change her life. The circumstances are out of her control. She is at the mercy of heartless bureaucrats. But hopefully the dam will break and the things that need to be done will get done soon.

And as for the flash. I took some shots of our cat last night in our living room, using the flash, and a macro lens. I think they turned out pretty well.

that's a good idea... or you can put them in those glass cubic vases and just use as decoration... maybe add some fresh flowers... or those pretty curly bamboo shoots!
Well.... that's what I'd use them for, but I'm a girl LOL
