10 Jan 10 - If you've submitted a photo to the group, and it hasn't shown up, please take a moment to review the Group Rules. Usually it's a case of missing tags, or missing links, or because it does not show enough detail for ID.

If you do not know the ID of your fish, post a topic in the discussion area before submitting your photo to the group. Once you know the ID of your fish, tag it correctly then submit it for approval.

About Fish species / FishBase

READ INSTRUCTIONS CAREFULLY!!!

Photos and identification of fishes. We would like this to be an extensive collection of pictures of fishes identified to at least genus level. Photos of both dead and live fish are welcome, but it must be possible to identify the species from the photo.

Please don't post multiple photos of the same fish.

This is a not a group for showing off angling photos or aquarium photos (unless you can adequately identify the fish).

INSTRUCTIONS
Identify the fish in your image yourself or via the FishBase website and provide the link to the species on Fishbase in your IMAGE DESCRIPTION.

If you wonder what kind of fish you have photographed and can not figure it out via the FishBase-website, we are sure other members can help you identify it. Just post the image and ask a question in a COMMENT. If posting an unidentified fish, make sure there is a fair chance that one can identify it from the photo. If not it will be removed from the image pool.

Instructions for posting a photo in the comments area

If you use Firefox, there is a greasemonkey script that allows you to easily post photos in comments and discussions - you can download the script here. This script lets you choose from the photos you've most recently visited and post them in a variety of sizes.

If you rock with IE, you have to do things the old skool way.
1) Go to your photo page and click on "all sizes". Please only post small or medium pictures in discussions.
2) Copy and paste the link provided into your discussion comment.

Also add tags to your image to make them searchable. Sometimes when new photos arrive without tags, we'll give you a little reminder. Sometimes, when we're grumpy we just won't accept them. If we give you a reminder, you get about a week to add tags before we deny your photo. You can always resubmit it once you add the tags.

GUIDELINE FOR TAGGING

Here are our required tags:

1) FISHSPECIESGROUP and FISH

2) GENUS NAME (e.g. Salmo)

3) FULL SPECIES NAME (e.g. "Salmo trutta trutta")

4) COMMON NAME

Here are some additional suggested tags:

1) Habitat (FRESHWATER, MARINE)

2) LOCALITY especially COUNTRY, but also lake, river etc. can be added if you like.

3) LOCAL NAMES in your country could also be very interesting as tags.

4) ORDER and FAMILY

All this will make the image pool searchable by genus, full latin names and common names. Although Flickr doesn't differ between capital and non-capital letter, a latin species name is always written with the first letter in capital in the genus name and only normal letters in the species name (epithet) and subspecies name. Example: Salmo trutta trutta. The italic, although
standard, is not possible and not necessary when adding tags in Flickr.

And remember: the better we tag the more interesting the group can be!

The best way to search for a species would be to go the groups TAGS and just click the tag there.
