About YMCA & YWCA BUILDINGS OF THE WORLD, THEN AND NOW.
The Y as it is known today was founded in England in the 19th Century. The Young Men's Christian Association became a place for those seeking alternatives to traditional bible study groups. It became a refuge for those down on their luck, for those looking for a cheap place to stay the night, for all kinds of sports and swimming, etc. Later the YWCA was created to cater to young women. Some of the buildings shown here, especially the ones from the 19th and early 20th century are monumental and of exquisite design. Many of these old buildings have been torn down, converted to other uses, and abandoned. Come and join and enjoy this part of our history.
