About Highres Favorites (1000 pixel and more originals only)

Group Rules:
1. This is a group for your favorites. To make sure that they are good photos they should have been favorited by someone else too.

2. The photos have to be big enough to be considered high resolution. Depending on the application or script you use to actually see the high resolution a size of exactly 1000 or larger than 1280 or a size of 1600 pixels for slide shows on big monitors works best.

3. Please add a comment or favorite on at least one other photo in the pool for each of your submissions to the pool.

Explanation of tools and methods for convenient high resolution viewing

Finally we have greasemonkey scripts and third party applications that allow you to see flickr with something else than the 500 pixel thumbnails that flickr uses in photo pages or slide shows

The 500 pixel group pool greasemonkey script works well and fast and just requires that you use Firefox with the greasemonkey extension. Group pools provide a completely new experience if you use this script.

The High Res Flickr greasemonkey script is very important to me. But the current version is a bit of a mess and requires you to choose between several options each with its own drawbacks. I provide links to 3 versions of the High Res Flickr script in the photo below. The original one only works well if all photos you see are exactly 1000 pixels large. Larger photos that are downscaled in the browser take too long to load and look bad in Firefox Versions 1.x and 2.x and Internet Explorer including Version 7. Opera so far has the only good quality downscaler but not enough greasemonkey script compatibilty to run the original High Res Flickr script. I provide a modified version below or in this link

The photos in this pool have to look good if this script is active. If your originals are too small the photo will probably be deleted from this pool. With the current original version of the script photos that are exactly 1000 pixels in size look best and are the only ones that look good at all if you use Firefox 1.x or 2.x.. Opera does not have the quality problem but needs an adapter version of the script because of its very limited greasemonkey script compatibility .

I have another modified version that fixes the image quality and download time problems of the original script by using large size images instead of original images. Unfortunately this only works if the original has a size of at least 1281 pixels. Because this is the minimum size for which flickr creates a large size version.

Tinou Baos large size and full screen slide shows don't require extra software or configuration. Once again Opera works best for them. And here is this group pool as a full screen slide show.

If you don't use the Flickr High Res greasemonkey script you can get at the large version with minimum effort if you create a bookmarklet as follows: create a new bookmark and cut and paste the following into its address field: javascript:location.href='http://flagrantdisregard.com/flickr/onblack.php?&size=large&url='+encodeURIComponent(location.href)

And here the original idea I had for this group. Unfortunately almost nobody else participated:

You can collect several large pictures at once in your image comments. Or you could put a link to a large size of your photo into the image description.

For your own pictures flickr provides code which you can cut and paste to easily create an image and link in the photo comments or group discussion topic threads.

If you are just visiting here don't forget to visit the discussion topic threads. They are an important feature of this group.
