About Lekeitio

Lekeitio Bizkaiko kostaldeko ekialdean dago. Bilbora 55 Km. dago, Gernikara 22 eta Donostiara 72. Errepidez Ondarroari, Markinari eta Gernikari dago lotuta.

Lea-Artibai Eskualdean kokatuta dago eta 1,8 Km2 du. Itsasoak mugatzen du iparraldetik, Ispasterrek hego eta mendealdetik eta Mendexak ekialdetik.

Otoio eta Lumentza mendien oinetan kokatzen da Lekeitio, mendiok aldazbeheran-aldazbeheran itsasora egiten dutelarik. Lea ibaiak, Lekeitio inguruan itsasadar bihurtua, itsasora isurtzen ditu urak Isuntza eta Karraspio hondartzen artean, ezkerraldean San Nikolas irla utzita.
Klima epela du eta itsasoaren ganetik 10 m.-ra dago.

Biztanleriari dagokionez, Lekeitiok gaur egun 7.500 biztanle ditu gutxi gora behera eta dentsitate handia: 4.200 biztanle/km2-ko. Eskualdeko biztanleria beheraka-beheraka doa oro har.
Gaur egun turismo eta zerbitzuak, zerrategiak, arrantza eta arrain-kontserbak dira jarduera nagusiak, azken biok krisialdian daude baina.

La villa de Lekeitio se sitúa en el litoral oriental de la provincia de Bizkaia. Dista 55 Km de Bilbao, 22 de Gernika y 72 de Donostia. Se comunica por carretera con Ondarroa, Markina y Gernika.

Ubicada en la comarca de Lea-Artibai, tiene una extensión de 1,8 Km2. Limita al Norte con el mar, al Sur y Oeste con Ispaster y al Este con Mendexa.

Lekeitio esta asentado sobre las laderas de los montes Otoio y Lumentza, que en suave declive descienden hacia el mar.
El río Lea, convertido en ría, vierte sus aguas al mar entre las playas de Isuntza y Karraspio, dejando a su lado izquierdo la isla de San Nicolás. El clima es suave y su altitud sobre el nivel del mar es de 10 m.
En cuanto a la población, Lekeitio cuenta hoy en día con 7.510 htes. y su densidad es elevada, de 4.200 htes./km2. Se puede decir que la comarca en su conjunto asiste a un proceso de declive demográfico generalizado.

Las actividades económicas predominantes en la actualidad son el turismo y servicios, la industria maderera, la pesca y la industria conservera, si bien los dos últimos son sectores en crisis.

The town of Lekeitio is located on the eastern coast of the province of Bizkaia. It is 55 Km from Bilbao, 22 from Gernika and 72 from Donostia. It has road links to Ondarroa, Markina and Gernika.

Situated in the Lea-Artibai district, it occupies 1.8 Km2. Bordering on the North with the sea, on the South and West with Ispaster and the East with Mendexa.

Lekeitio is built in the side of mounts Otoio and Lumentza, which softly slope down to the sea. The river Lea, which becomes and estuary, flows into the sea between the beaches of Isuntza and Karraspio, with the island of San Nicolás on the left.


Its climate is mild and it is 10 m. above sea level.

Lekeitio currently has 7,500 inhabitants. The density being high (4,200 Inhab. /km2). As a whole the population of the district is in decline.

Today, the main economic activities are tourism and services, wood industry, fishing and canning, although these last two sectors are in crisis.
