This sounds like a great idea (wonder who's great idea this was?)
Don't forget to incorporate daylight saving time into the equation, so 8PM GMT would actually be 9PM in England. It would also be 5am the next day my time, so I'd have to either behave myself on the Saturday, or be really really drunk, which would be much more fun as nobody has ever taken a photo drunk which they later regretted.

Hey Mel, I won't be shooting anything at 4:30am. ZZZzzzzzzz LOL

Ha ha Ansell. This is exactly why we need to discuss the options. Specifying a time for the shoot might mean that only half the members would be able to join in. So what do people think?

I agree and think the more members who are able to participate the better. So how about open for the whole weekend so we can really share our world with each other. Or the weekends can be on rotation, one weekend subject specific, next weekend evening shots, next weekend at a specified time etc etc and open to suggestions. But still trying to keep it different from the weekdays????

i'm really thinking about the limitation of members participating, and feel bad some people will be sleeping (and sometimes that's gonna be me hahaha) .
i am really like the idea of the "best of your weekend" shot from where you are in the world, tagged with date, time, and location - even though where i am in the world isn't all that exciting lol :o) what does everyone think?!?

I think it's probably inevitable that whatever time you set globally, there'll be some for whom it's impractical to enter, but I don't think that should necessarily stop us from doing so anyway. If the times are varied enough, then everyone should have their fair chance to contribute to a reasonable percentage of them.

why not both ideas?
one fixed universal time and one weekend shot.
for the universal time take a straw poll of the distribution of members location.use that to choose a time that would catch a majority of members. its likely to be a one off anyway unless hugely successful

it's possible we could do both the global and the themed shots on the weekend. we have until next weekend, so we will definitely keep it in mind! :o) any other suggestions?!

I am in.... :-) Anyway we can give a first try and see how it comes. We are always on time to change the rules later.
I like the idea of the where we are in the world, because today that the time was 10:00am I have been thinking all the time how nice it would have been to give another shot during the day.
In case we have a problem with the time of the day, why don't we just set the GMT time without AM/PM, so in this case one can choose it in the first twelve or the second twelve hours.

Correct me if i'm wrong (this happens very occasionally LOL) but there are 4 major time zones in the world. So why not use them in turn, ie; one weekend shot from your relative time zone each month and one open weekend shot. This might also help reduce what could eventually become 1000's of images every weekend, which no one could realisticly hope to view?
Just a thought!

Yeah Ansell 'wot you talkin bout fool?!?!' (I aint goin on no plane!!!) Sorry just made myself laugh!
Dont think we will get 1000s of shots over a weekend either, it will still be one shot per person per thread and the theme would change each weekend.
Think we are swaying towards the idea of using all your wonderful ideas and changing it around to suprise you all every weekend!! :)

Ok you have GMT, EasternStandardTime, CentralStandardTime and Pacific Time, I was going to write them into the post ,but, well I should(assume nothing) :))))) each of us lives in one of these zones, most of Europe is of course GMT but the Americas go by Pacific and Eastern times, OZ and Asia are based on Central, etc. So each week one zone is chosen and if you live in the chosen zone it's your turn, and based on 4 weeks per month the whole world is covered monthly. Does this make better sense or are you now twice as confused? :)))))) But as I says last time i could be rer rer wrong!

Never heard of here being referred to as CST or EST or anything other than local time. The idea of having it by GMT anyway though is so that in addition to everyone shooting at the same time of day, we have collections of pictures were taken at the same actual space time. So it wouldn't matter which particular time zone you happen to be in, just keep a second watch handy for GMT time and go by that.

Ok I give up, needless to say everywhere in the world is relative to GMT, I believe countries just use these other zones to avoid confusion, mainly in navigation. Like well, who remembers the The World Aid concerts at Wembly and Philadelphia, Phill Collins performed at Wembley then boarded a Concord and actually arrived in the US before he had even left London, if I remember correctly even the producers had problems wrapping their heads around this one. SB I bet your really confused now! LOL

We should use UTC!!!
Coordinated Universal Time (UTC,--Fr. Temps Universel Coordonné) is International Atomic Time (TAI) with leap seconds added at irregular intervals to compensate for the Earth's slowing rotation. Leap seconds are used to allow UTC to closely track UT1, which is mean solar time at the Royal Observatory, Greenwich.
The difference between UTC and UT1 cannot exceed 0.9 seconds, so if high precision is not required the general term Universal Time (UT) (without a suffix) may be used.
In casual use, Greenwich Mean Time (GMT) is the same as UTC and UT1. Owing to the ambiguity of whether UTC or UT1 is meant, and because timekeeping laws usually refer to UTC, GMT is avoided in careful writing.
Time zones around the world are expressed as positive or negative offsets from UTC. Local time is UTC plus the time zone offset for that location, plus an offset (typically +1) for daylight saving time, if in effect. UTC replaced Greenwich Mean Time on 1 January 1972 as the basis for the main reference time scale or civil time in various regions.

I can't see where anything has turned into a pissing match. (I've been in plenty of those in other groups and this is nothing of the sort) I think here, people are doing just as asked to. Sharing ideas. No one is talking down to, or insulting anyone. Just brainstorming outloud -- which can be a good thing.

my last post (scroll up) gives a time when people could be most awake with 4 time zones everyone can relate to:
UMT = Sunday 2pm
New York = Sunday 10am
Tel Aviv = Sunday 5pm
Hong Kong = Sunday 10pm
the hardest time would be for people that live west of New York and East of Asia because it is early, but nothing terrible that wouldn't allow people to participate.
i mean, hey, if some members cannot participate, then hopefully they can on the next one. let's keep it fun!

Seems a reasonable time to me. Japan would probably be either 11 or 12 at night (though a GMT reference would be most useful as I can tie that to an exact number).

Hey guys, so glad you're all getting along. Now play nice please or it just ends in tears and we all want this to be a fun friendly group where all members opinions are respected in a nice way. Right sermon over...
Thanks all for your suggestions for the weekends. I think we've now decided which way we will go with it so look out on Thursdays (GMT!) for that weekends thread. :)
