About Bishop's Castle

I've been visiting Bishop's Castle since 1978, and watched the painstaking, and often painful dream become reality one massive rock at a time. Jim Bishop is as impressive as the labor of his two hands: an iconoclast, not a towering figure, but a muscular man whose stature has been reformed by the enormity of boulders he stacks one outrage at a time. Jim is a pioneer defender of personal liberty and has done more than vocalize his utter belief in the basic premise of personal freedom - he has built a castle of stone and ornamental iron that perplexes the engineers who marvel at its soundness, sent there by the government who hoped to usurp the rights of this man who laid the foundation of his life on pubic lands, and then erected a monument to courage, personal vision, hard labor and ingenuity.

Located in south central Colorado on State Highway 165 approximately 12 miles southeast of the junction of SH 96 and SH 165
