About Kurt's Camera Corral

Kurt's Camera Corral. Get yours at bighugelabs.com/flickr

Kurt's 1973

Let's see how many different photographers have a photo of Kurt's sign. The idea is to have a collection of the same photo from a wide diversity of people. I certainly know there are a lot of photos of the sign floating around Albuquerque. Maybe we could accumulate photos from across the nation, maybe around the world, and hopefully spanning the 57 years they’ve been in business. And if you have any other Kurt's pics, feel free to add them.

The original Kurt's Camera Corral was opened in 1950 by Austrian immigrants Kurt and Edith Kubié. I believe it was one of the original stores on it’s block on east Central Avenue - the original Route 66. Albuquerque was just beginning to expand past Carlisle. Kurt’s is an icon in the New Mexico photographic community. Growing up in Albuquerque, where did you buy your first camera? Probably Kurt’s and if you’re my age, probably from Kurt.

Kurt Kubié passed away a few years ago. Sadly Edith Kubié passed away January, 2007. The company is still family owned. It’s the best place to find an unusual part for an uncommon camera. It's a living photographic museum. So dig through your photo treasures and submit a photo of Kurt's!
