Group Description

Is the iPhone the new Leica?

In quality, certainly not! I may have high hopes for the iPhone 5 but we'll be waiting a long time for the iPhone to reach the quality of film. However - how was the Leica put to use by street photographers?

Since the first light and portable cameras became available photographers have used more candid methods to capture vibrant, lively images of life as they saw it on the street. After the transition from film to digital, the introduction of camera phones and most notably the iPhone explosion, street photography has burst wide open with a brand new style and a brand new generation of image makers.

Ok so a few of us still shoot with film and more than a few of us shoot with digital SLRs
but there are many street photography groups dedicated to using these already. This group is dedicated purely to the iPhone shooters.
So the rules:

Does a hipshot have to contain people? Not necessarily, not all street photography is people orientated.

Does it have to be shot from the hip? Weeeell, that is under some debate too.

Does it have to be shot with an iPhone? Absolutely YES!

...And what exactly is the definition of the term hipshot in relation to photography?

I would say it is a photograph shot from the hip or waist, or arms length, (or thereabouts), basically without really looking through the viewfinder/screen. I won't say it is a picture taken with little or no regard for framing or focus because you get to know your camera, you know the angles of view, and you can have regard for framing and focus. More often than not though it is a shot taken in an instant and usually without the subjects knowledge. It is photographing a moment based on instinct.
