About ROTHKOesque
This is a group dedicated to photographs which are, intentionally or not, "Rothko-esque". Anyone familiar with Mark Rothko can immediately recognize his style, and to those who are drawn to it never tire of its surprising impact.
From Wikipedia:
"Mark Rothko was a painter who is often classified as an abstract expressionist, although he vociferously denied being an abstract painter.
He was born Marcus Rothkowitz in Daugavpils, Russia (now Latvia) and emigrated to the United States in 1916. His work concentrated on basic emotions, often filling the canvas with very few, but intense colours, using little immediately-apparent detail. In this respect, he can also be considered to presage the color field painters.
Color Field is an art movement which began in the 1960s and is characterized by canvases painted entirely by large areas of solid color.
Color Field is related to Suprematism, and Abstract Expressionism. Color Field painting sought to rid art of references to nature, and any recognizable references to past or present art. In pursing the direction of modern art, the artists wanted to present each painting as one big, cohesive, monolithic image."
Please only post images which are clearly inspired by Rothko, or otherwise capture some of his style, or are in some way related to the painter\'s work.
