About Canadian Surveillance Camera (aka CCTV) Signage

The purpose of this group is to share images of Canadian surveillance camera (CCTV) signage. We welcome photos that capture three key elements:
(1) a surveillance camera (CCTV) sign,
(2) the related surveillance camera(s), and
(3) the organizational environs.

A sign, camera and organizational identification may all appear in a single image, but more typically it will take several shots in the same locale to capture these three elements.

Please take care to avoid capturing personal images, notably faces, in ways that would make individuals identifiable. If someone's face appears in a photo clearly enough for someone to identify that person, please anonymize (e.g. by blurring or blocking the face) before uploading to Flickr. If you spot a face in this group that should be anonymized, please alert the photographer and the group Administrator.

For each set of photos taken in one location about the same organization, please caption or otherwise indicate the organization name, and if possible locate the images on Flickr's map (see the map option). If this is not feasible, indicate the location in the description with sufficient specificity to find the spot in person or via Google Street View (e.g. a street address or a latitude/longitude produced by a GPS device).

Often there will be cameras visible, but no sign in sight. If so, please indicate in the description and tags that there is no-sign in the vicinity.

Less often you will see a CCTV sign, but no cameras. Please also indicate this (no-camera in the description.

Common tags used in this group include: CCTV; camera/no-camera; sign/no-sign; org name (e.g. Sears, CIBC); city (e.g. Toronto, Winnipeg); relevant privacy legislation (e.g. PIPEDA, FIPPA, MFIPPA).

PIPEDA= Personal Information Protection and Electronic Documents Act, which covers private sector, commercial organizations in most Canadian provinces as well as all federally regulated enterprises (notably banking, transportation, telecommunications).

FIPPA= Freedom of Information and Privacy Protection Act - in Ontario, which covers provincial government organizations, including universities.

MFIPPA= Municipal Freedom of Information and Privacy Protection Act - in Ontario, which covers municipal government organizations, including schools and local police.

Please send your CCTV signage photos to this group. You'll first need a Flickr account and then upload the photos to your Photostream.

Alternatively, you can simply email them to CCTV Surveillance Signage (using the Flickr concocted email address of people20got@photos.flickr.com) and we'll periodically send them to this group. This does not require that you be registered with Flickr. The subject line will become the photo title, and the email body becomes the description. Please provide enough location information so the photos can be mapped.

The images belonging to this group's photo pool will be used in a research project based at the University of Toronto lead by Andrew Clement and Joseph Ferenbok. More specifically they will be used in preparing a paper entitled Mitigating Asymmetric Visibilities: Towards a (Canadian) Surveillance camera signage code to be presented at the research workshop on Camera Surveillance in Canada, 14-16 January 2010, Queen’s University, Kingston, Ontario, Canada.

Thank you,

Andrew and Joseph.
