About peace_by_piece
This is a collaborative art project. The aimis to create a sequential ‘drawing’ composed of a series of postcards (6 by 4 inches), created by a variety of invited participants. Each individual card is made in response to the one before it. The drawing will gradually grow as each new card is added.
It will explore the possibilities of interaction in virtual and physical space using postcards (a medium designed to travel for the exchange of ideas between people and place)
If you would like to participate send an email to taminspace@yahoo.co.in
So here’s how it works:
Step 1
Receive mail:
I will make art on a 6 by 4 inch postcard, which I will scan, and ‘post’ to your email inbox. So you will receive postcard via email with an image on the front and a message for you on the back
Step 2
Respond:
You respond to this postcard by making one:
Make art on a 6 by 4 inch postcard (even just a piece of cardboard cut to size)
The art you create on your postcard can be in any 2d medium.
I must be a direct extension/continuation of the card I sent you. Your postcard will form one panel in the drawing so it should visually connect to the image I sent you i.e. when your postcard is put next to my postcard they should somehow be connected through line/colour/content to form one continuous drawing.
Step 3:
Write some words on the back of the postcard—a message, a bit about your thoughts during the process or your reflections on peace/ life/ art/ pizza….
Step 4:
Send mail:
(Via virtual and real postman)
1.Email:
Scan both sides of the postcard and post the jpegs to me
Via email taminspace@yahoo.co.in
(Jpegs should be as high resolution as possible)
2.Post office:
Put a stamp on the postcard and mail it to this address:
Tamlyn Young
English teacher
Yeong-Cheon Elementary school
25 9 Ro. Wolgok Dong
Gwangsangu
Gwangju
506 605
South Korea
(I will happily re-imburse you for the postage at your request).
Step 5:
I will make a card that responds/links in with your card. I will then post this card to the next participant’s inbox.
(NB I will post every contributor a complete printed set of everyone’s postcards as the project grows so you will send one postcard via real mail and receive a whole lot in return)
Thoughts on what 'peace' actually means:
peace comes from synergy between the individual and its social environment between inner and outer space, between ideology and action. For me, peace is about removing the barriers that exist within us and between us , limiting our capacity for integration and preventing us from seeing that we are part of a ‘bigger picture’. The result of combined effort and vision creates something bigger than the individual.
The word ‘peace’ and the signs and symbols associated with it are commonly used to the point of becoming clichés. The perpetual quest for peace is intricately woven into the fabric of human history. Where do you find it? Meditation? Medication? People pray for it, pay for it, fight for it. Even kill for it.
more thoughts...
In my experience visual language has the ability to transcend the communication barriers imposed by, cultural, political/ religious/ socio-economic differences aswell as language, ego, and geographic restrictions etc… Bridging gaps that keep people apart physically and ideologically. Maybe this is because it allows us to bypass the intellect and access the intuition.
Some words I associate with peace are: synergy, interconnection and co-operation. All of these words imply the need for communication.
