How did everyone's day go?

So I just got back from shooting. This morning it was wet and raining, so I opted not to go and shoot the graffiti as orginally planned. However, by the time 2:30 pm rolled around the weather was wonderful, But I didn't have the props in hand to do the original graffiti tour.

So instead I winged it and ended up driving around town, driving for 15 minutes and shotting for 15 minutes with Jon aka groundglass.

There were a couple of mishaps here and there and we almost ran out of time towards the end. But we finished in one piece with our completed roll.

How did everyone else do?

rain, cloud, peek of sun, rain and more rain....we spent half the time sheltering under a tree....but i got them done.
this is only the second roll of film i've put through the holga (haven't got the first back yet) so i'm very excited to see the results.
only one double exposure i think :)

had some weird weather over here as well: sun, rain, clouds, sun again, then the next bout of rain. but i finished my roll - am a bit worried though, as i shot indoors/underground... i should better keep my fingers crossed for next two two weeks - the lab is really slow.

but i enjoyed the challenge, the hectic, the pressure to go and shoot during the assigned time... great idea!

I only took about 45 minutes, and I was really taking my time. I walked pretty much through the whole area (Liberty village). I'm glad we're going there again Thursday, there were a lot of things that I didn't get photos of, or that I thought would look better in b&w. It was pretty quiet, there weren't a lot of people around, which was nice.

Mishaps? What mishaps, Rannie?

I shot with Wei (portscan.ca) in the R.L. Hearn Plant up on the Lakeshore. I was using a Holga 120SF and at one point the batteries came out. I think I sacrificed a shot or two getting them back in. I'll be developing the roll tommorrow night.

May day went well.... my two hours shooting for the 120 challenge not so well. Camera needs servicing. Hopefully a cleaning, lube and minor adjustments will do the trick. Anyone know a good repair shop in Barrie or Toronto?(Yashica MAT 124G)

i have no idea if we got anything good or anything. the clouds were nill and it was VERY bright. but worst of all it was hotter than hell - and so f'ing humid. if there are any more this summer, while we're in texas - will have to do something indoors.

Partially cloudy. Sunny enough though. I think I got a good roll, but developing will tell. Only took me 30 minutes, but I live in a target rich environment.

how sad... as i'm unloading my climbing gear from my car, my lubitel falls from the passenger seat to the footwell and off pops the focus ring on the taking lens... it just popped off... decided not to shoot... in retrospect that was kinda stupid.. .would have made for some interesting pics but i left the lubitel in my car instead of taking it down to the crag... on the upside it was a great day of climbing despite the overcast sky!

I got to where I wanted and think I got a good portrait of a older man at a garden show. I wanted to take pictures of some abandoned buildings I had seen before (had TALL grass) when I got there they had mowed the lawn *sigh* Think it went ok overall, I'll know in a few more minutes - my film is in the tank being washed. The shoot went well although it was very warm and humid. I walked from the John Hancock to Millennium Park down Michigan Avenue with my son as planned. I gave him my Holga to shoot whatever he wanted to. Naturally, I shot my first six shots within 10 minutes. Thank goodness I was shooting with the Diana Windsor and had 16 rather than 12 shots total. As always, there's just way too much action around the Water Tower with street performers and strange, colorful people. I slowed down and managed to finish my roll with 15 minutes to spare at Millennium Park without getting one recognizable landmark.

Ugh. I shot at a busking festival in Dundas. I picked my time slot so that I would be able to catch specific set of acts but I wasn't able to get them all. I didn't account for A) wading through the crowds B) having to wiggle down to the front row with the kiddies C) what would happen to my legs squatting on the ground D) what would happen to my brain as the blood rushed out when I stood up E) nasty sun burn, even in the overcast weather. Youch! F) dehydration.

Oh, and the kicker... I forgot my portrait shot. Fsck!

I believe my shoot went well! I felt confident about the photos I was taking (although I may sing a different tune when I get them back from the lab!). It was fun though, I went to an area I had been wanting to shoot for a while, and my boyfriend came with me (my portrait was of him, his was of me). It was nice and sunny, I was using 400 so I hope nothing's overexposed, but I have high hopes and can't wait to get them back!

phew it's good to hear that so many of you had a challenge as well :D

the 400 roll i originally intended to shoot with unwound, so i ended up loading some 100EG ...

today we did work with the church here at a place called Green River Gorge. at first i had no idea how i'd keep shooting for 120 minutes, but near the end i started working heavy on cleaning a resident's RV (power washing...WOO! cannot describe how much i enjoy powerwashing something very dirty, and seeing the dirt just fall away!)

i had to catch myself and shoot the last 3 shots. i got a portrait of a human that i hope went okay (think i may have been too close, but the dood has a great face), and one of a great dog.

it was alternately cloudy and sunny, which was great, given it was forcast to be cloudy and cool.

i noticed during the shoot that the left of the holga wasn't terribly secure, so here's to providence as the only way some of these pics aren't completely horked. :)

i shot a roll of bw 400 afterward for fun, then got through another roll of the ektachrome.

thanks so much for offering the challenge! it was a lot of fun!

Man, what a long day, I got sunburnt dehydrated and just plain knackered. I couldn't do what I originally planned so I ended up at 'woofstock', a huge dog show. I had fun but I thought the subject might be a bit repetitive, we'll see. I wandered away from the distillery towards the end of my time.

I ended up shooting some fuji 160 vc which suited the dogs I hope, one of them was dyed bright pink and wearing sunglasses, poor thing.

Miles, last weekend I say a dog with dye pinked hair, did the owner have pink hair as well?

Yes it did seem like it was pretty challenging for most people. but I think that is part of the fun, the mishaps and all.

So my original plan was to shoot specific pieces of graffiti around town, done by a specific artist, but I didn't have enough staked out and it was raining in the morning.

So after having brunch with Jay, Natalie and Edward, I drove Natlie down to Liberty Village. I was almost ready to follow her around, when I decided to shoot elsewhere.

So I called up Jon to see where he was at and ended up picking him up. We both had a 2:30 to 4:30 time slot.

It was about 2:15 when I picked him up and we drove East, until 2:30. I parked and we shot for 15 minutes...

So I quickly decide that I am gonna do a series of multiple exposures. Shot subject A and Subject B in frame 1. Then Shoot subject B and Subject C in frame 2. Then subject C and subject D in frame 3. and so on and so forth. At our first location all went well.

We get to our second random location 15 minutes later and I shoot frame 4 (double exposed) . Then I start frame 5 and proceed to advance the film to frame 6 without double exposing frame 5.. OOPS

so instead of continue, I decide to shoot the rest of the roll without the double exposures.

At location 3... 15 minutes later... I am carrying my tripod, lubitel mounted and cable release attached. I noticed that my cable release got caught in the tripod, but it wasn't until later, that i realized it had completely ruined my release which i picked up only a couple of weeks earlier, which just replaced a cable release that I broke awhile back. (Cable releases don't like me)

I try and shoot my self portrait at one location and find out that the timer on the lubitel isn't firing when the time is up. I end up setting up the portrait in a different location and borrow Jon's finger to fire off the shutter (oops, but it couldn't be helped)....

Soon afterward one of the metal pins that keeps my lubi together decided that it wants to wiggle itself loose, which is a constant problem on the camera. It's easily fixable, but very annoying.

So we have one last location to shoot and have about 30 minutes left. This is when Jay calls me to tell me he is done 120. So we hop in the car and pick up Jay downtown.. and continue to try and find a last location. Drive drive drive... either it doen't look interesting or there is no parking to be had. both Jon and I had 3 shots left, ended up parking in our last 5 minutes and quickly shot off our last 3 images...

It should be interesting to see how it turned out. I shot with some Fuji Provia 400, which I will be cross processing. So I probably won't have my film back till much later in the week.

I was pretty beat after the shoot and proceeded to take a nap after i started this thread.

During my challeneg shoot I actually ran into a fellow photoblogger and Flickr fanatic. Dave aka DCE spotted my Holga and we ened up chatting a while, finding out that we had many people in common. My friend next to me was super bored, but mooments later two other people showed up, fellow artists, adding more photo drama. Challeneg went well, damn Bill, it was hot and humid, reminded me of India. Can't wait to see what I got...

I'm too much of a chicken to take a picture when a stranger is looking at me so a couple of times I tried to casually shoot from the hip as I walked past. I shot my thumb. Twice. Ah well, you can see half a picture. I'll scan them as soon as I can.

More practice needed for me.

That was my foot.  Pro User  says:

In spite of the heat from 12:30 to 2:30 it wasn't all that bad. Decided to do a driving tour of old Pasadena, most things shot from the window of my truck. Almost forgot the portrait but remembered at the last minute. Won't know til Monday how it all turned out.

I did end up at a local antiques store I haven't been to in several months, looking for old cameras. Two floors of unending junk. Looked like the trip would be a bust, but on a bookcase on the second floor, I found an Arrow Diana clone, still in the box. Checked it out and the camera was still in the plastic, never been used. Had a $21.99 sticker on the box so I figured I'd see if I could talk it down. Handed it to the guy at the register and before I could say anything, he responded with "Oooh, cute camera. And half off too!" Sweet. $11 later I'm tickled pink. Now to get a roll of film through it...

had planned to go to a wine tasting fest in VA before signing up for the challenge. so I figured I'd shoot there, even though I'm not much on shooting at "events". luckily, we stopped into a small town for lunch that was much more stimulating, so I stayed there for my 2-4 slot (although it only took me an hour to expose my roll). I was going for a whole roll of double exposures, but I "screwed up" a few times and did singles.

later, I was wishing I'd followed my first instinct and shot in the 6-8 slot instead. the air was hot and heavy and the sun, low. we were driving the slow route home through rolling pastures. I shot a gratuitous roll through the Hawkeye. would have shot more, but I ran out of 620 spools.

really, really great idea for a group. thanks for letting me participate.

Jay says:

It's interesting, the challenges that everyone had with weather and crowds. I had a different challenge.

I walked with Ed (holgamaniac) up and down Yonge and Church streets. We planned to stop every ten minutes to take a shot of whatever we found interesting at that particular location. But we HAD to take a shot there. Rules. I found out that Ed loves rules. This was a challenge because sometimes we were forced to stop at very uninteresting locations and really had to search for a worth-while shot.

We stuck to the plan but I added an extra challenge for myself. I decided to double-expose every frame. So I had to actually find two shots each time that would overlay eachother well. We shall see if my little twist worked or not.

Overall, I found the pressure of shooting a set amount of shots in a set amount of time a big challenge when you don't have a specific theme or plan. Now I appreciate how photographers rely on my art direction to get the job done.

I ended not getting to my intended destination in time and it got extremely dark and overcast towards the end, so it was not ideal since I was pretty much shooting out the car windows. For the sake of the challenge, I stuck to it and finished the roll.

The Holga did not seem to wind the film very tightly so I'm probably going to have some major light leaks. Could be interesting...we'll see!

I had a ton of fun with this. I tried to tell the story of a typical summer day on Main Street on Cape Cod, so I walked along and tried to capture images that show how great (and miserable) life can be here in the summer. I was blessed with great weather and hopefully captured some interesting stuff. We'll see...

Man... going out to Jamaica Bay (in Queens, NYC) wasn't as bad as I thought it was, but when I got out to Broad Channel - a tiny Island off of JFK - there were literally no one around! It was like I was in a deserted fishing village. I think my portrait will end up being of a duckling I snuck up one, but I will have to see how the roll turns out in the morning. Luckily the weather was great - but I got sunburned.

Susan and clickclick: sorry to hear about the holga problems. I shove a small piece of cardboard under the take-up spool which works pretty well for me. I haven't had a loosly wound spool since.

Here's a good site that illustrates it: Toy Camera Tension Tip. I found the permanent solution too difficult to remove the spool, so I just use the cardboard.

Going a bit OT here, but I found I still got loose rolls with the card under the take-up spool. I put it under the other (lefthand) spool now to provide more resistance and tension and it works a treat.
