FLAKY for me.

I like it, the drawing is pretty slick. I like the brushes. The layers seem to be working OK. And it shows promise. I'm using the 1st gen touch, don't know if that means anything but exporting is a real PIA. The first sync went rather well. I was able to save one psd file. But the color was all garbled. The JPG worked better, of course that was flattened. No matter. I cannot save anything but original size. Now it does nothing but crash on my iMac (home machine) I'm frustrated. Will try again maybe later. I had great hopes. And I'll read up I may be doing something all wrong. Poop!

OK, I've found out a few things. I still can only save at actual size, none of the bigger sizes work, they are all garbled color. BUT I can save the layered psd now. I must start the viewer, and make sure the layers icon is pressed so that all layers show. Then I can export it. This is a big help, at least I now have a chance to make this a viable app.... more experimenting to follow.

Of course it look great. It's fantastic to work with it on my iphone.
But I have problems with viewer too. In my imac crashes every time I want to play the video and export the image.
In my macbook works but not the video performance don't run as well and when I export a large image, both in psd in jpg, results are horrific. Nothing to do with the original.

I agree with you the zoom in and out are quite cumbersome, not smooth at all. I feel we've been spoiled by brushes zooming. Though I like the color and brush picker in one spot. I also think reaction time on color eye dropper is slow.... Some if my problems may be old touch model.

With an iphone 3G I have the same feelings.
Moreover, I love of brushes.app the speedless for color gradation painting with a high transparency and giving speedly tonalities around it. With layers only you can do it if previous layer is opaque, as with brushes. If color of environment is a mix of layers you can ever modify transparency (I think I didn't explain well with this, sorry)

I understand what you mean.... I did post another "review" over at brushes" in your new thread. I think we want a perfect app. And I'm hoping between brushes and layers there will be one. I know there are still more out there being worked on, so I keep telling myself be patient. But it's hard when we're so close to having it all....

I haven't tried to export using the Layers app. I save it to photo and open it in Brushes. otoh I can't get the layers thing to work for me; I'll practice. I do love the choice of brushes though. I just keep playing with them. It's not perfect though.

meanwhile for me, the best is still brushes :)

I actually enjoy the difference to Brushes, cause I have to build up new skills now (which I always enjoy), and I dont really mind the bugginess at this point (release early, release often :)
The brush tips yield very different results, I still think square format is not the best design decision.
I like the tabbed brush/color view and stepped in/decreasement of tip sizes.
I still dislike the auto show/hide of the interface :)
The final version is way snappier than the one i tested, still Brushes beats them all.
I think I will use Layers mainly for outlined, sketchy stuff whereas Brushes gets my color-dripping painter love :)
@lln not sure if that's what you address: you can pick up alpha-transparencies in Layers by choosing current layer (tap on eyedropper)

I agree with you all, the zoom and paning are no easy to control. I still like it.. Not only because of layers (having no layers on Brushes push me to improve) but I see a lot of possibilities with all those textured brushes. It's not so far when I first had Brushes in my hands and I had to used to it. I'll test Layers, trying to do what I did with Brushes: try watercolor, oil, ink look. If you remember that great artist Xoan Baltar, almost all his drawings have this outline look we still have with Layers ...now think of great Susan's work... Totally (amazing) different but the same app. I mean, be patience to get used to it.
In the other hand, I have Colors too, and is pretty good, but I still preffer Brushes.
What I totally hate is when I pick a color and its take it Totally opaque. That makes me have to open color tool and choose the alpha (I think) I had...so, better if I choose the color directly from here.
Another thing is the fact that the features he promises, don't exist (yet) but I have Already bought it. What if Ben don't fix it?..or worst...can't fix it?
It's a great app, and I love the color/brushes menu. We can use the brushes stuff for making very original works, just give it time ;))

@Ben and Luis: Chossing color with the eyedropper (how embarrassing!) I can select the color of one layer with his transparency or mixed tap color, but opaque. But I can't choose mixed color with alpha value of the last brush, as a brushes.app
to my way of working is the most uncomfortable of Layers.

Loving Layers! I can't go back to working on just 1 flat canvas now... Even if Layers isn't quite perfect the advantages of having layers to work with makes it my new default iPhone painting app.

The exported high resolution images have slightly rough/sharp brush strokes to them. I guess it also depends on the brush. It reminds me of the first version of the Brushes Viewer that has since been improved to give softer strokes on exported images. Here's my first painting exported at full resolution: www.flickr.com/photos/networkshadow/3740487928/

It's sure I need more practice and learning with Layers.

But I don't like at a big size the intermittent or dentate (I don't know if I say correct) texture of brush; for example in your painting the verticals fine lines of the background at right. I feel it very 'artificials'

Like Luis mentioned above, the fact that the eyedropper defaults to 100% of the new color is problematic, and results in breaking your rhythm. The square canvas is clunky, but the possibilities of using multiple layers is exciting. Big downer for me is that 'app-smashing' just doesn't work well currently; sometimes images exported to Camera from other apps work OK, other times they are stretched, rotated 90 degrees, or just don't import at all. Aarrgh. Transparent layers mean that you can have separate 'ink' and 'paint' layers, but this has limited value now because you cannot erase pixels on the transparent layer. The brush options are very nice, and I'm having fun exploring them. Someone may have mentioned this in a different post , but Layers' brushes seem more feathery and dry visually than Brushes' brushes, which feel more liquid and fresh. Or maybe I'm crazy on this? The tracking is great for finger and Pogo; I'm finding that I can get more control, but possibly at the expense of creativity...I feel myself getting into a tightness that comes with my Photoshop workflow. I feel like Brushes is to Corel Painter/ what Layers is to Photoshop. Brushes and Painter feel more intuitive, and more 'right-brain'...

Totally agree with Matt and after some days of trying I must say, that I really appreciate how *different* Layers is. Cause it resets my learning curve back to zero, calling for different techniques (compared to Brushes). I wish more ppl would post their first crap (like mine, awful so far hahaha), am sure in a month from now we'll see very different, still very cool and elaborate fingerpainting art.

@patricio villarroel Thanks!

I do agree that Brushes has more "liquid" feel to the brushes that is good. However there's almost no difference between the two apps besides the layers feature and slightly different UI. I wouldn't go as far as to say the two apps are night and day (ie Photoshop / Painter). There are only a max of 5 layers, so it's not going to turn into 50+ layer Photoshop project (as my PSDs often do)...

@Matt_Connors "Transparent layers mean that you can have separate 'ink' and 'paint' layers, but this has limited value now because you cannot erase pixels on the transparent layer."
I'm not sure where you are getting this... The eraser allows you to erase pixels on any layer with any amount of transparency. This gives Layers a huge advantage over Brushes because you can erase part of a painting without destroying work on other layers above/behind it; for example a background.

The eye dropper problem is caused by the fact that we can now have transparent layers... It's not a problem in Brushes because it's all flat. I'm sure it will be fixed in future versions.

I do like the square canvas because I don't really need to change to landscape to paint a wider picture unless it's helpful to see it in landscape. I do agree that panning and zooming could use some tweaking... Maybe a better way to zoom to 100% quickly would be nice also.

It's a wonderful 1.0 version of Layers. I can't wait to see how it's improved in future updates.

I did run into an odd glitch today; I had 4 layers and was 'inking' on top layer. I closed the app, and came back in, and I lost all of my changes on the file since last night, back to my initial sketch. This is especially odd because I dipped into the file about 5 times while files were saving on my computer.

the pds export worked ok for me, like others have said though, the colours did seem to change. i havnt used it much yet so i will reserve judgment. seems ok though so far.

1st impressions it doesn't seem as natural or as fluid as brushes and the images not as painterly. bt maybe thats my lack of skills:)

Layers is still very frustrating for me, it's cumbersome when compared to Brushes...I'm still having issues with the 'disappearing layers', but there are additional glitches: the eyedropper not selecting the color correctly, and defaulting to a neon green; that pesky full opacity default when you do eyedrop a color; the sloooowness of the brushstrokes when compared to Brushes. I make a lot of strokes, and with the current brush speed, I make a half-dozen strokes and wait for the app to catch up, which hampers the sense of immediacy that fingerpainting should have. My biggest frustration is that I really think that it has tremendous potential, but is just not fun to use...

Hi All,

My layers is not working for me. It stalls when loading images I try to pull from Brushes...and then it shuts down. either it will pull the image and save it, and erase any other work that I have done in the app OR it doesn't pull it up at all AND it DELETES the work that I have done. Also, it moves very very slow when drawing/painting. the paint doesn't lay down, so I have a difficult time seeing. Is anyone else having these problems.

Also, now the issues with pulling from my photos (I store the images under my photos when when moving from one app to another) has filtered into Brushes. I'm thinking maybe I should uninstall Layers. I do not know what I will do if my beloved Brushes stops working!!!!! It is my main sketchbook these days. :-(

I am also having difficulty exporting. When I first installed Layers Viewer on my Macbook, it imported two paintings ok but then stalled. Eventually it tried importing part of my latest painting, but when I played it back, I saw the movie had stopped a third of the way through.

I tried emailing myself a still of that third painting as a psd file so that I could at least keep the layers, but it has patches of transparency and is also incomplete.

I'm very impressed with the size at which Layers can export when it behaves itself though.

There is however the disadvantage that it does slow down when I have been working on it for a while. Selecting colours becomes particularly sticky.

Maybe the number of layers is a bit over-ambitious and we should be limited to fewer??

I am very puzzled by the suggestion we should put a photo on a layer - see the Tips - the one titled something like 'Use A Photo'. It suggests erasing a layer above a photo to reveal part of it.

I have hunted high and low, but nowhere can I find any way to import a picture to work on, as you can in Brushes.

Does anyone know what this means?

7 erase, the photo on first layer will appear

with this method you have to remember where is the detail you want to make appear.
