About Mersey Tunnels Police
The Mersey Tunnels Police is a small, non-Home Office police force which polices the Mersey Tunnels in Merseyside, England (between Liverpool and the Wirral) on behalf of the Merseyside Passenger Transport Authority.
Mersey Tunnels Police officers hold the office of constable. Unusually in the UK, the force is answerable to the Merseyside Passenger Transport Executive, rather than the Home Office. The Executive also appoints the force's officers who are formally sworn in by a Justice of the Peace. The force's jurisdiction is limited to the tunnels themselves, marshalling areas and entrance roads, within which area, they may exercise their duties in accordance with The Mersey Tunnels... Bylaws.
While the tunnels force have primary responsibility for these areas, meaning they enforce the by- laws and traffic regualtions, as well as responding to any incidents or emergencies within the tunnels, all major enquiries must be handed over to the Merseyside force. It is also worth noting that the British Transport Police have overall responsibility for policing the railways using the Mersey-rail tunnels.
