Martin Schoeller is one of my favorite portrait artists. You have to admire a guy that's made a living making the same photo of different people for a decade. I suppose the Annie L. pedigree doesn't hurt much, either.

I'd love to tackle this style in a future SSC meet, so I'm throwing it out to think about. I know he shoots medium format with studio equipment, but we can meet the challenge with our own gear. I envision this as a Gangnam or Apukjeon shoot, late at night on a weekend, a spectacle in and of itself. I'd be a blast.

I have searched through Flickr a few times and I've seen a million attempts to nail the look, but few have come close. Check out the video links.

(seriously, can you ever look at these people the same way?)

Let me know what you guys think. Wide angle lens shoved in their faces? How many lights? What makes the eyes explode?

You can see a lot if you enlarge the photo and look into the eyes since often lot of the lighting is reflected there. It looks like in the case of Clinton, at a minimum there were two side light panels, one on each side. I also suspect there was an on-axis light aimed right at him - possible a beauty dish. Also, note the very shallow depth of focus so that only the facial plane and eyes are in focus. Even the tip of his nose and the back of his head are out of focus.

Ditto of Uncle Jack, but slightly deeper focus so the nose is in full focus but it looks like possibly barn doors were used. A similar approach may have been done using grids on the lights to make them more narrowly focused so that the light falls dramatically off from the center of the face.

I will see if I can find some stuff for outdoor lighting in preparation of the next meet-up. Ideally we should time part of the shoot at sunset with a low horizon.

Check out Jill Greenberg if you haven't. I would love to rent a studio and use 6-8 different light sources and try to get some shots like this.
