Photoshop Fixes #55

Opened image in ACR and set black and white point. Levels adjustment, vibrance and clarity adjustments.
Opened in CS4 and cloned and spot healing brush.
Filter/distort/perspective
Transform/distort to get vertical and horizontal alignment better.
New layer fill 50% grey and paint black 15% on bricks and white 12% on window ledges.
Flatten then duplicate layer and put in multiply mode then reduce opacity till I got the richness in the suit that I wanted.
Finally some facial fixing of eyes and teeth
High pass sharpen and flatten with white stroke.

(Got my entry in early John thanks :))

Description is coming....

Apparently Flickr actually does have a character limit on the descriptions & I am trying out Photoshop's History Tool. I need to edit it down. Will try to get it posted tomorrow. Gotta go work now.... :-P

Challenge 55
1. Cropped and straightened.
2. Small amount of cleaning using the clone tool and healing brush.
3. Colourized photo. The method I use for colourizing is to create a solid color adjustment layer. I change it’s blend mode to color and select the tone I need. I turn it’s layer mask black so as to hide the colour and then paint back the colour with a white brush over the subject. When I had completed the colourizing I though it looked to pale, the colours were far to light. As an experiment I merged all the layers to a new layer and changed it's blend mode to multiply and reduced the opacity to 50%. I'm not sure if I'm happy with the result, but it saved time by not having to adjust all the color adjustment layers.
4. Burned some detail into the shoes and hat. I did this by creating a new layer on top and filling it with 50% grey. I set the blend mode to soft light and painted with a black brush set to 10% opacity.
5. High Pass filter for sharpening. Again I merged the all the layers to a new layer and desaturated it using shift command U. I then used the High Pass filter and set it's bend mode to hard light.
6. Finally I created a simple border.

Good explanation and technique John, particularly the section on Colourisation which merits a few experiments on its own.
Interesting use of the high pass filter for sharpening which is also what I do but slightly differently. I change the image into LAB mode and sharpen the lightness channel so that any sharpening doesn't affect colour balance etc. Does your method work the same way?

Nigel - My High Pass filter technique.
When a photograph needs some edge sharpening I tend to use the High Pass filter.
I duplicate to final photo to a new layer and de-saturate it (shift command U). Next I change the layer to a smart object and run it through the the High Pass filter. I change the blend mode to either overlay, soft light or hardlight, the choice depends on the photo. By de-saturating the layer it stops any colour shift on the final version. Also, the High Pass can be adjusted to taste because it’s a smart object.

Challenge 55 Result

Well another disappointing turn out this week.

Thank you Nigel, Matt and Triplejohnny for your time and effort and thanks to all who have commented on each individual entry.

This weeks winner is Triplejohnny. Your entry really stands out to me. The detail you have brought out is excellent. The detail with the window is also well executed.

Well it’s over to you Triplejohnny to post and judge challenge 56. Remember to state the finishing time etc.

Thank you all again for your time spent contributing to the challenge.

Thank you John. I will try to provide a worthy photo(s) to work on tonight. We're still wrapping up the challenge on Wednesdays in our time zone right? Regardless of the date you specified? :)))))))
