About 100sqft Exhibition for 100 Artists
The third instalment of an unusual exhibition designed to showcase the work of 100 established and emerging artists is coming to Dalston, London, in May. Aptly called ‘100sqft’ (http://www.100sqft.co.uk ), the exhibition is based in a pop-up gallery presented in a grid format, in which each of the 100 artists has one square foot to display a piece of work. The next launch takes place at Dalston’s Cholmeley Boys Club on May 16, 2010, from 7pm to late, followed by the public exhibition taking place on May 17-19 from 10am-10pm daily.
100sqft, which has already enjoyed two successful runs, is the brainchild of artist Carne Griffiths, who was previously creative director of Hand & Lock - the UK’s longest established hand embroidery firm with a stellar client list. The idea is to take 100 artists from around the world and give them 1sqft of space to express themselves. The featured artists can choose their position in a 10x10 grid and watch the exhibition unfold online at www.100sqft.co.uk . When all the online squares are full of artists’ images, which appear as thumbnails, the originals are publically exhibited.
Curated by Carne, the exhibition responds to the difficulties emerging artists face in showcasing their work to the ‘right’ audience. 100sqft welcomes outsider artists, hobbyists and graduates and will place their work alongside pieces from established artists. There’s no selection process (a deliberate tactic) and the project brings together an eclectic range of work ranging from digital prints and mixed media collages to oil paintings and low-relief sculptures.
Carne comments: “The visual presence of a single piece of artwork combining the talents of diverse creatives from different backgrounds makes 100sqft a worthwhile and significant exhibition. 100sqft combines social networking for artists with the chance to air their work at an affordable rate.”
Artists pay just £25 to register for the 100sqft exhibition which includes: representation on www.100sqft.co.uk , their work available for sale online, free entry to the launch event, publicity through social networking sites and promotion of work through press articles and web and print features.
To coincide with the launch of the third exhibition, artists are also being invited to enter their works for a fourth exhibition. An empty grid has been opened up for this purpose at 100sqft.co.uk and artists of all persuasions are welcome to make submissions.
The official launch event for the third 100sqft takes place on Sunday May 16, 2010, at The Cholmeley Boys Club, 68 Boleyn Road, Dalston, London N16 8JG, from 7pm.
