About 100 Famous Mountains of Canada
There is no such list. I have searched the Net and haven't found one. However, Japan has its Hyakumeizan (100 Famous Mountains) and Scotland has its 284 Munros. There are lists such as Washington State's 100 Famous Mountains, Peaks Over 4,000 Metres in Canada and another one in the U.S. There are many mountain lists but no 100 Famous Mountains of Canada. So, I decided to start one and ask the help of other Flickrers.
Here are the criteria:
1. The highest peaks are a prime choice (Logan, St. Elias, Waddington, Robson), but not all the highest need make the list because of the next two criteria.
2. The most famous peaks, those that are the most often visited, climbed and/or photographed.
3. Mountains of significant historical background, either in European settlement history or First Nations history (e.g. sacred mountains such as Mt. Garibaldi in BC or Maple Mountain in Ontario).
4. What is a mountain? There seems to be no clear definition, however, I would suggest the subject be over 300 metres above the surrounding terrain, be not called a hill (e.g. Cypress Hills), and give an impression of being a "mountain" and not a hill. My dictionary says mountains tend to be steeper than hills, for example. Use your discretion. If I see a photo that really doesn't look "mountainy" I reserve the right to either ask you about it or remove it.
Please note that while BC, Alberta and the Yukon are the obvious locales from which to choose mountains there are mountains in other provinces and territories. If the subject fits all of the above criteria (except 1, which won't apply to all candidates) then post the photo.
*Please include the name, elevation and location. This list is not limited to 100 mountains. I just want to know what you think should be on the list.
One final note: I can't be here everyday so please be patient if I take two or three days to get back to any discussions, messages, etc.
Phew! Cheers!
