That's an excellent idea. I'm trying to go from Sunday to Sunday, so I will use that one for the next theme.
Also, I was thinking that maybe even after a new theme starts, maybe I shouldn't 'lock' the previous one(s) so people can still add to it if they want. I locked 'Angels' but couldeasily 'unlock' it..
What does anyone else think about this? Of course, all relevant photos can always be added to the pool....

Hey everyone. Heres the deal. Im Ryan better known as PunkUE. Im going to be helping out our admin Matt run the group for a few weeks while he's on vacation. I'm looking for weekly theme idea's for the next few weeks and wanted to hear the opinions of those who will be shooting. I know there are many wonderful photographers in this group so someone must have an idea they'd like to try out. Just post them up in this thread. With that said, I can't wait to see some group participation.

I like your theme thing, though I wonder if running it weekly won't run you out of themes a bit fast. Anyway, how about (and I hope you don't think me ghoulish, I often find these things of historical interest), 'Causes of Death'. Very few gravestones add these, except for battle casualties - but some do (I've already posted three or four that do in fact, and although two of them were British servicemen, they did not die in battle).

Hmm, that's an interesting theme! I would be able to contribute, but are there many of us who have photos of that sort?

I have a few. I think most of us probably have some, because that is the type of thing that 'catches our eye' when we're out with the camera..
As for themes running out,Fin, well I'm optimistic there! Metrogirl (before this thread started) actually sent me about 8 suggestions! And I sure have some bottled up myself. But even if after 6 months or a year the ideas run out, there's no shame in starting over with ones already done, as there will be new members and hopefully we all will have taken some new shots..

I agree that the idea is an interesting one. I know Ive got dozens. I'm with Matt on the topic thing though. Theres endless possibilities when it comes to shooting cemeteries. Worst case senario, like Matt said we can always reuse ideas if needed.

I came up with a few ideas for themes:
Badges and Brotherhood -- fraternal organization emblems, military crests, and other symbols of the sort
"Babyland" -- sections of the cemetery for babies and young children (an unfortunate but common name for it)
Victorian Symbols and Epitaphs -- claspy hands, broken chains, broken plants, sorrowful rhymes
Family Plot -- tall obelisks with multiple names on them, or plots with several family stones (hmm, may be boring...)
Memorial Day decorations -- for those of us in the US, maybe a chance to go out and show the flags and flowers to those of us who aren't
Foreign Language -- markers in English-speaking places that are in a different language
Cemetery Geometry -- circles, squares, triangles
Not Made Of Stone -- Markers made of wood or glass or metal or concrete
Famous Names, Famous Graves -- celebrity graves, or just people with the same name as one
Crosses Only -- no slabs or pillows or dolmens or obelisks
Jewish Cemeteries -- we've seen a lot of crosses, how about a week with a different religious theme
Historical deaths -- graves of those who died in events that would have affected history, e.g. earthquakes, battles, big fires (should include backstory)
Square Crop -- photos cropped to a square, with composition to suit such a format. Could include squared circles, crops to fit square monuments, or just square format shots of your subject
Lichen-O-Rama -- NO MOSS PHOTOS ALLOWED (okay, just kidding).
Most of these are kind of general, so if you have some interesting twist, or something fun, it would be great to hear it. Somebody come up with a theme that will give me a reason to post the stone with the e-mail address on it!

There are alot of good ideas in there. Granted there are a few that would limit the members chances to participate, alot would be good for everyone. These will be deep in mind while choosing next weeks theme.

How about "What were they thinking?!" There's always the stone that you have to wonder why it is the way it is. (Like the sideways pointing hand ;-)

Funny I don't have any that would fit this category so no reason to suggest it except it might provide good viewing .. how about eery weather at the cemetery? That way anyone, anywhere could contribute to the theme.

Good idea, I'll add it to the list! In fact, when I have the time, I might take these posts and compile them into a single organized list and check them off when we use them..

How about the graves of people who died of a specific cause or people who perished in a historical event (as first requested by ratsal)?

Well, we already did a causes of death theme, but I'm sure we'll bring that back again as it's a good one. The historical event I think is great..

Bad Taste Festival -- "desktop publishing" stones with bad fonts, bad clip art, or terrible poetry, garish shiny goldenness (careful not to judge taste of the graves from other cultures) typos or spelling errors, amyc500's "What were they thinking?" would fit here
Family Portrait -- not just a ceramic headshot, but a picture of two or more people, either ceramic or etched
Offerings to the Dead -- little presents left at the grave
Interesting Mausoleums -- maybe we won't all have some nearby, but lots of cemeteries will have at least one mausoleum
Unknown -- Old unreadable stones, Unknown Soldiers, unmarked graves, or graves with markers that don't have words
Graveyard Cliches -- spooky, misty, spidery, crumbly, ghostly, and orbish photos. Black and white vine-covered statues! Tilty old stones! Eerie weather (like 4tuneseekr mentioned) Skeletal hands reaching up from the... okay, maybe not skeletal hands
I really like johnmartine63's idea of the stone with a story.

How about spouse's who aren't buried together, either buried in separate parts of the same cemetery or even somewhere else?

Thanks, ratsal adsand. I was hoping for an infusion of new ideas before tomorrow's theme change! I will choose from among these. I also appreciate the sense of humor with which you share them..:)
BrooklynNYC: that is also an interesting idea. Do you mean posting photos of both, however? It would certainly help if we knew the'story' and could share it!

How about "ghosts in the graveyard" as a theme. This can be anything from "orbs" and "ghosts" to the word ghost on the tombstone, or photos taken during the night. I guess this could also go along the lines of "spooky".
Amusing poetry or sayings on a grave - ex. I told them I was sick, but they didn't listen...
Cemetery monument stones - I have a couple from where the cemetery was moved from one location to another - to build a highway. In the process the names of half the pioneers were lost. The bodies wound up in a "mass" grave, the names on the monument.

BrooklynNYC suggested spouses buried separately. How about spouses buried with someone else or mulitple spouse graves. My father in law buried his first wife, will be buried next to her but is planning to bury his current wife just below his feet (not below, south).

I just wanted to bump this post to the top, because it is where members can make suggestions for our weekly topic. Jade19721 has done a great job, in several other posts, of compiling the suggestions here and listing the ones we've already done.
We definitely appreciate your ideas, and need more. I've been trolling through the list and found my idea for tomorrow, but realize we need to get some more..

I have my compiled list of themes we have already done somewhere around and it probably needs to be updated.
@ iawildflwr - I see a few of those on your list that have been repeated, but I see a lot more that we have not done. Thanks for adding to the list.

Hey y'all- I have an ideer that I don't believe has been mentioned yet.... "the living amongst the dead." This theme would be an opportunity for our fun group to get to know each other on a more personal level. I'm talking about pictures that have been taken in a graveyard with us in the picture. It could be simple posing, or reflections that alot of us catch when photographing smooth surfaces or glass. However, if you are prone to social phobia, you could include a picture of a companion, or even a stranger passing by.
Just ham it up, folks!

What about a story line?
ex. I post a picture and start a story - the next person posts a picture to continue the story and so on? There's enough statues, monuments and names out there that we could maybe try this.
Second idea - Tickle Our Funny Bone - things that we found funny, amusing or just that tickled our funny bone while in the cemetery (anything from a name to a mis placed item that looked odd and brought a chuckle.)
Third - Dated aka "sign of the times" - Things that at the time were very "modern" or "fashionable" on a tombstone/sarchophagus but now we look at and think wow.. that's an antique or doesn't exist anymore (ex. armor and chainmail costumes, big huge dresses, elizabethan collars, horse and buggies... etc.)

Thanks, Phoenix Rose! I think we have done "cemetery humor" but eventually will probably want to do it again. The other two are new ones!
As for the first suggestion, I'd love to do it. I have thought that at some point we could indeed begin doing interactive things like that. I also thought of playing a "back and forth year game". For example, I post a grave of a person who lived 1950 - 2007; the next person posts someone who died in 1950,etc. etc. and see how far back we can go matching years. Or start in the distant past and bring it forward..

Ohh-- or turn it into generations - so someone died in 1950, the next person would post something from someone that would have been born say 1925 but died in 1970 (so young enough to have been the child but been the 'next generation) and then someone else would post say someone old enough to be the child of the 2nd and so on - and try to hit the generation (and name that generation accordingly). ex. War Baby, Baby boom, etc etc.
